Rugged, scenic, and sparsely populated, New Mexico has long attracted visionaries and cranks, but the desert colony profiled in this slim 2007 video documentary hosts some of the most extreme fringe dwellers. A hardy band of government protesters who've staked out their remote 16 square miles of brush, they live off the land, minus electricity or running water, wasting little and bartering for goods and services. From earth mothers to war vets, divorced dads to teen runaways, these fierce individualists have found community, staving off both right-wing cops and marauding radical vegans. Jeremy and Randy Stulberg directed without moralizing, but also without bite. (Andrea Gronvall)
