    The Spanish-American War of 1898 seems to mark a turning point in both geopolitical and literary histories. The victorious American empire ascended and began its cultural domination of the globe in the twentieth century, while the once-mighty Spanish empire declined and became a minor state in the world republic of letters. But what if this narrative relies on several faulty assumptions, and what if key modernist figures in both America and Spain radically rewrote these histories at a foundational moment of modern literary studies?Following networks of American and Spanish writers, translators, and movements, Gayle Rogers uncovers the arguments that forged the politics and aesthetics of modernism. He revisits the role of empire—from its institutions to its cognitive effects—in shaping a nation's literature and culture. Ranging from universities to comparative practices, from Ezra Pound's failed ambitions as a Hispanist to Juan Ramón Jiménez's multilingual maps of modernismo, Rogers illuminates modernists' profound engagements with the formative dynamics of exceptionalist American and Spanish literary studies. He reads the provocative, often counterintuitive arguments of John Dos Passos, who held that "American literature" could only flourish if the expanding U.S. empire collapsed like Spain's did. And he also details both a controversial theorization of a Harlem–Havana–Madrid nexus for black modernist writing and Ernest Hemingway's unorthodox development of a version of cubist Spanglish in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Bringing together revisionary literary historiography and rich textual analyses, Rogers offers a striking account of why foreign literatures mattered so much to two dramatically changing countries at a pivotal moment in history

    The Roman poet Ovid, author of the famous Metamorphoses, is widely considered one of the canonical poets of Latin antiquity. Vastly popular in Europe during the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, Ovid's writings influenced the literature, art, and culture in Spain's Golden Age.The book begins with examinations of the translation and utilization of Ovid's texts from the Middle Ages to the Age of Cervantes. The work includes a section devoted to the influence of Ovid on Cervantes, arguing that Don Quixote is a deeply Ovidian text, drawing upon many classical myths and themes. The contributors then turn to specific myths in Ovid as they were absorbed and transformed by different writers, including that of Echo and Narcissus in Garcilaso de la Vega and Hermaphroditus in Covarrubias and Moya.     Anxieties of Interiority and Dissection in Early Modern Spain brings the study of Europe’s "culture of dissection" to the Iberian peninsula, presenting a neglected episode in the development of the modern concept of the self. Enrique Fernandez explores the ways in which sixteenth and seventeenth-century anatomical research stimulated both a sense of interiority and a fear of that interior’s exposure and punishment by the early modern state.Examining works by Miguel de Cervantes, María de Zayas, Fray Luis de Granada, and Francisco de Quevedo, Fernandez highlights the existence of narratives in which the author creates a surrogate self on paper, then "dissects" it. He argues that these texts share a fearful awareness of having a complex inner self in a country where one’s interiority was under permanent threat of punitive exposure by the Inquisition or the state. A sophisticated analysis of literary, religious, and medical practice in early modern Spain, Fernandez’s work will interest scholars working on questions of early modern science, medicine, and body politics

    La necesidad de una exploración biográfica para formular desde otra perspectiva la narración de la historia es el punto de partida de este libro. Un historiador de la cultura española de la segunda mitad del siglo XX debe tener presente que durante y pese al franquismo hubo también en el escenario de la intimidad un lugar para la manifestación de la rebeldía, del disentimiento y de la libertad, aunque estas tuvieran que relativizarse hasta el oxímoron con las restricciones: rebeldía controlada, disentimiento circunspecto y libertad interior. Distinguir el ámbito asfixiante de la cultura oficial frente a las escapatorias y los respiraderos que tuvieron como escenario la intimidad y el lenguaje es el propósito que unifica los distintos capítulos de este volumen

    Este libro muestra, a través de abundantes pruebas textuales, que Fernando de Rojas y Francisco Delicado emplearon el libertinaje, la metáfora, la ironía, la parodia, la alegoría y afirmaciones sobre el carácter moral de sus respectivas obras como cobertura para codificar ataques contra la oración cristiana, los santos y los dogmas centrales del cristianismo. Publicado originalmente sin las dos notas cervantinas que van ahora en el apéndice, con el título "The Art of Subversion in Inquisitorial Spain: Rojas and Delicado" (Purdue University Press, 2005). Esta nueva versión ha sido puesta al día, con el fin de incorporar la investigación publicada a partir de esa fecha
