"Alternative Histories of the Self investigates how people re-imagined the idea of the unique self in the period from 1762 to 1917. Some used the notion of the unique self to justify their gender and sexual transgression, but others rejected the notion of the unique self and instead demanded the sacrifice of the self for the good of society. The substantial introductory chapter places these themes in the cultural context of the long nineteenth century, but the book as a whole represents an alternative method for studying the self. Instead of focusing on the thoughts of great thinkers, this book explores how five unusual individuals twisted conventional ideas of the self as they interpreted their own lives. These five case studies are skilfully used to explore how the notion of the unique individual was used to make sense of sexual or gender non-conformity. Yet this queer reading will go beyond same-sex desire to analyse the issue of secrets and privacy; for instance, what stigma did men who practiced or advocated unconventional relationships with women incur? Finally, Clark ties these unusual lives to the wider questions of ethics and social justice: did those who questioned sexual conventions challenge political traditions as well? This is a highly innovative study that will be of interest to intellectual historians of modern Britain and Europe, as well as historians of gender and sexuality"-- Celebrating or rejecting the unique self -- The Chevalier/e d'Éon: transgender heroine, pugnacious diplomat, or pious lady? -- Secrets and lies: Anne Lister's love for women and the natural self -- Richard Johnson and the imperial self -- James Hinton and the sacrifice of the self -- "Better to be an active devil than a crushed saint": Edith Ellis and the new life

"The LGBTQ Comics Studies Reader explores the exemplary trove of LGBTQ comics that coalesced in the underground and alternative comix scenes of the mid-1960s and in the decades after. Through insightful essays and interviews with leading comics figures, volume contributors illuminate the critical opportunities, current interactions, and future directions of these comics. This heavily illustrated volume engages with the work of preeminent artists across the globe, such as Howard Cruse, Edie Fake, Justin Hall, Jennifer Camper, and Alison Bechdel, whose iconic artwork is reproduced within the volume. Further, it addresses and questions the possibilities of LGBTQ comics from various scholarly positions and multiple geographical vantages, covering a range of queer lived experience. Along the way, certain LGBTQ touchstones emerge organically and inevitably-pride, coming out, chosen families, sexual health, gender, risk, and liberation. Featuring comics figures across the gamut of the industry, from renowned scholars to emerging creators and webcomics artists, the reader explores a range of approaches to LGBTQ comics-queer history, gender and sexuality theory, memory studies, graphic medicine, genre studies, biography, and more-and speaks to the diversity of publishing forms and media that shape queer comics and their reading communities. Chapters trace the connections of LGBTQ comics from the panel, strip, comic book, graphic novel, anthology, and graphic memoir to their queer readership, the LGBTQ history they make visible, the often still quite fragile LGBTQ distribution networks, the coded queer intelligence they deploy, and the community-sustaining energy and optimism they conjure. Above all, The LGBTQ Comics Studies Reader highlights the efficacy of LGBTQ comics as a kind of common ground for creators and readers"--

"Selections from the past hundred years of queer Korean literature. Following decades of activism for LGBTQ+ rights, South Korea has seen a flowering of queer literature, film, and Internet culture. Openly queer or transgender writers such as Kim Bi, Sang Young Park, and Yi Seoyoung are now receiving national and international attention. But the rich variety of queer Korean writing also extends into the past, as the nine stories in this volume show. Beginning with contemporary works of fiction by Kim, Park, and Yi and reaching back through the last century, this collection places expressions of queerness in historical and cultural context. It explores the sometimes problematic norms found in the stories and also considers the potential these texts hold for destabilizing binaries of sex and gender. Featuring works by the canonical authors Yi Kwangsu, Yi Kiyŏng, Ch'oe Chŏnghŭi, and O Chŏnghŭi and works by Yu Sŭngjin and Kim Sunyŏng that have been recovered from archives, this collection reflects the diversity of modern Korean literature. This volume contains the following works: "Yundo Is Back" (2017), "My Queer Year of Junior High" (2016), "Saltwater Baths" (2006), "Traditional Solo" (1970), "Struggling amid This Despair" (1965), "Spring" (1950), selections from the novel Spring (1940), "Dear Sister, I'm Off to the Moon" (1933), and "Yun Kwangho" (1918)"--

From the Castro Valley in San Francisco to the conga-line of Christopher Street that cuts through New York's West Village the vanished world that the photos in Nicholas Blair's book revitalize have far less to do with capturing specific places than with freezing a unique time--one in which the very concept of "gay streets" had meanings and functions nowhere to be found in the modern world, queer or otherwise. In the era of these photos--between 1979 and 1986--as well as for many years before and more than a decade after, nearly everything that was commonly considered "gay" either happened on streets like these or was tangentially connected to them. The special world that reality created can be seen in all its heat, humor, and intimacy in Blair's photographs. The cliché is to call what these photos capture "a community." But, to me, it has more to do with a sensibility and an experience, ones that, however divorced from the current world, remain deeply embedded in something eternal: History.--From the introduction by Jim Farber

"Valerie Solanas's legendary play, Up Your Ass -- never published during her lifetime but full of her signature irreverence and wit, incisiveness, and camp -- explodes social and sexual mores and the hypocritical, patriarchal culture that produces them. The play, the full title of which is Up Your Ass Or From the Cradle to the Boat Or The Big Suck Or Up from the Slime, marches out a cast of screwy stereotypes: the unknowing john, the frothy career girl, the boring male narcissist, two catty drag queens, the sex-depraved housewife, and a pair of racialized pickup artists, among others. At the center is protagonist Bongi Perez -- a thinly veiled Solanas -- a sardonic, gender-bending hustler who escorts us through the back alleys of her street life. The fictionalized predecessor to SCUM Manifesto, the play shares the same grand, subversive, implicative language, equally spitting and winking, embracing the margins, the scum, and selling a trick along the way."--Amazon.com

Slo 'Mo and the Pace of Black Queer Life -- Where's the Joy in Accountability? Black Joy at Its Limits -- Ordinary ENERGY -- An Oral History of the Future of Burnout. "In Feels Right Kemi Adeyemi presents an ethnography of how black queer women use dance to assert their physical and affective rights to the city. Adeyemi stages the book in queer dance parties in gentrifying neighborhoods, where good feelings are good business. But feeling good is elusive for black queer women whose nightlives are undercut by white people, heterosexuality, neoliberal capitalism, burnout, and other buzzkills. Adeyemi documents how black queer women respond to these conditions: how they destroy DJ booths, argue with one another, dance slowly, and stop partying altogether. Their practices complicate our expectations that life at night, on the queer dance floor, or among black queer community simply feels good. Adeyemi's framework of "feeling right" instead offers a closer, kinesthetic look at how black queer women adroitly manage feeling itself as a complex right they should be afforded in cities that violently structure their movements and energies. What emerges in Feels Right is a sensorial portrait of the critical, black queer geographies and collectivities that emerge in social dance settings and in the broader neoliberal city"--

"In a remote part of the UK, where nothing ever happens, a group of teenagers share a safe house for LGBT+ young people. While their shared home welcomes difference, it can be tricky for self-appointed group leader Birdie to keep the peace. The group must decide how they want to commemorate an attack that happened to people like them in a country far away. How do you take to the streets and protest if you're not ready to tell the world who you are? If you're invisible, does your voice still count? A play about love, commemoration and protest. Written fifty years on from the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England, this is a unique play for young people about the struggles and joys of being gay"--About the play

"In one of the first collections of scholarship at the intersection of LGBTQ studies and Appalachian studies, voices from the region's valleys, hollers, mountains, and campuses blend personal stories with scholarly and creative examinations of living and surviving as queers in Appalachia. The essayists collected in Storytelling in Queer Appalachia are academics, social workers, riot grrrl activists, teachers, students, practitioners, scholars of divinity, and boundary crossers, all imagining how to make legible the unspeakable other of Appalachian queerness"--

Queer(ing) criminology -- Criminalizing queerness -- Queer criminology at the intersections: victimization and offending -- Queer criminology and law enforcement -- Queer criminology and legal systems -- Queer criminology and corrections -- Future directions in queer criminology. "This book introduces the growing field of Queer Criminology. It reflects on its origins, surveys its foundational research and scholarship, and offers suggestions for future directions. Moreover, this book emphasises the importance of Queer Criminology to the field and the need to move LGBTQ issues from the margins to the centre of criminological research. Core content includes: -Contested definitions of and conceptual frameworks for Queer Criminology; -The criminalisation of queerness and gender identity in historical and contemporary context; -The relationship between LGBTQ communities and law enforcement; -The impact of legislation and court decisions on LGBTQ communities, including the issue of sentencing disparity; -The experiences of queer victims and offenders under correctional supervision, and the impact the criminal legal system has on both of these populations. This revised and updated edition includes new developments in theory and research, further coverage of international issues and a new chapter on victimization and offending. It is essential reading for those engaged with queer and feminist criminologies, gender studies, diversity, and criminal justice"--

"[A novel] about three women--transgender and cisgender--whose lives collide after an unexpected pregnancy forces them to confront their deepest desires around gender, motherhood, and sex..."-- Reese had what previous generations of trans women could only dream of; the only thing missing was a child. Then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Ames thought detransitioning to live as a man would make life easier, but that decision cost him his relationship with Reese, and losing her meant losing his only family. Then Ames's boss and lover, Katrina, reveals that she is pregnant with his baby-- and is not sure whether she wants to keep it. Ames wonders: Could the three of them form some kind of unconventional family, and raise the baby together? -- adapted from jacket

It is a common observation that dominant US secular culture retains the stamp of 17th century Protestantism. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the veneration of monogamous coupledom, an ideal that has been entrenched rather than challenged by the recent extension of marriage rights to LGBTQ couples. But what if this narrative of 'history and tradition' turns out to suppress the queerness of its own foundational texts? 'Queer Faith' reassesses key texts of the prehistory of monogamy - from Paul to Luther, Petrarch to Shakespeare - to show that writing assumed to promote fidelity in fact articulates the affordances of promiscuity, both in its sexual sense and in its larger designation of all that is impure and disorderly.

'Growing Up Queer' explores what it is like being young and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) in the United States today. Using interviews and ethnographic research conducted at an LGBTQ youth drop-in centre, it shows how young people understand their sexual and gender identities, their interest in queer media, and the role that family plays in their lives. The young people who participated in this research are among the first generation to embrace queer identities as kids and teens, and this text shows how both sexual and gender identities are formed through complicated, ambivalent processes, as opposed to the natural characteristics one is born with.
