The book shows that a shift from a politically (and martially) active reading of the past to a primarily affective one follows the imperative, so clear and urgent at the turn of the seventeenth century, to put an end to violent conflict. The emotions that neoclassical tragedy and absolutist historiography sought to elicit were intended above all to be shared, and thus a medium via which political and religious differences could be downplayed or forgotten.     The female voice was deployed by male and female authors alike to signal emerging discourses of religious and political liberty in early Stuart England. Christina Luckyj's important new study focuses critical attention on writing in multiple genres to show how, in the coded rhetoric of seventeenth-century religious politics, the wife's conscience in resisting tyranny represents the rights of the subject, and the bride's militant voice in the Song of Songs champions Christ's independent jurisdiction. Revealing this gendered system of representation through close analysis of writings by Elizabeth Cary, Aemilia Lanyer, Rachel Speght, Mary Wroth and Anne Southwell, Luckyj illuminates the dangers of essentializing female voices and restricting them to domestic space. Through their connections with parliament, with factional courtiers, or with dissident religious figures, major women writers occupied a powerful oppositional stance in relation to early Stuart monarchs and crafted a radical new politics of the female voice.

    "This is a critical investigation of the engagements of scriptures in the life and speeches of U.S. Congresswoman Barbara C. Jordan (1936-1996). This study explains how scriptures work and are used by Barbara Jordan as a vehicle for political activism to illustrate an example of a larger phenomenon of scripturalizing and scripturalization outside of the context of institutional religion. In order to give a fuller context to Barbara Jordan's rhetorical strategies as an African American woman, Owens first considers the lives, speeches and use of scriptures of the formidable 19th century African American women orators and political activists, Maria W. Stewart and Anna Julia Cooper, who serve as precursors to Barbara Jordan. The author argues that Barbara Jordan makes American scripture, i.e., the Constitution, function in her speeches as a central component in a discursive rhetorical strategy of indirection, which she refers to as "signifying on scriptures." Jordan uses the Constitution, along with her personal history as an African American woman, to promote advocacy for racial justice and gender equality. The book is proposed for a new series, edited by Terrence Johnson, on Race, Religion, and Politics. Race, Religion, and Politics explores the increasingly creative and critical attention paid by scholars in recent decades to race and racial construction-political, cultural, theological, and philosophical-in the formation of religion and in the relationship between religion and politics. This book series examines the conditions under which religion and politics coexist within varying and competing conceptual schemes of race. The books in the series will engage with new narratives emerging from the study of global capitalism and from public discourse on democracy, social transformation, and democratic theory. Broadly historical and theological, the series showcases work that creatively weaves together methods and critical insights from a range of disciplines and debates. It seeks to uncover, examine, and inform global discussions on the most pressing issues emerging from religion and politics, race and religion, and faith and social transformation"--

Drawing on the triangular relationship between the 45th president, and his voters, and religious organizations, this work investigates the creation of the tale of Trump as the protector and enhancer of Christian values. The first part of the book discusses in detail the white conservative Christian constituency in the United States, and the development of feelings of displacement and resentment fostered by intergroup threat and nationalism. The central part focuses on the actor known as the “Religious Right,” through the rhetoric of one of their most representative organizations in the twenty-first century. The final part focuses on the character of Donald Trump and his peculiar relationship with religious discourse. The book demonstrates that while such discourse is expected of Trump as a Republican candidate, his approach to it is characterized by detachment and sloganized exploitation of Christian symbols. Ultimately, the book highlights the cultural tools that are crucial in the reproduction of structures of inequality and the ways they have been used by conservative politicians and groups to accumulate power.     The female voice was deployed by male and female authors alike to signal emerging discourses of religious and political liberty in early Stuart England. Christina Luckyj's important new study focuses critical attention on writing in multiple genres to show how, in the coded rhetoric of seventeenth-century religious politics, the wife's conscience in resisting tyranny represents the rights of the subject, and the bride's militant voice in the Song of Songs champions Christ's independent jurisdiction. Revealing this gendered system of representation through close analysis of writings by Elizabeth Cary, Aemilia Lanyer, Rachel Speght, Mary Wroth and Anne Southwell, Luckyj illuminates the dangers of essentializing female voices and restricting them to domestic space. Through their connections with parliament, with factional courtiers, or with dissident religious figures, major women writers occupied a powerful oppositional stance in relation to early Stuart monarchs and crafted a radical new politics of the female voice.
