    What are we talking about when we talk about migration? At this point, the overheated debate about migration flows lacks the necessary calm to leave the state of outrage. This step is necessary, however, in order to develop sustainable practical solutions. Successful communication as a prerequisite is the centerpiece of this endeavour. For this reason, this book focuses on various aspects of the facts of migration, in order to understand the situation as it stands, as well as the conditions needed for promising future pathways - both in terms of theoretical reflection and practical application. Worüber sprechen wir, wenn wir von Migration sprechen? Der überhitzten Debatte über Migrantenströme fehlt inzwischen die notwendige Gelassenheit, um aus dem Empörungsmodus herauszutreten. Das ist aber notwendig, um zukunftsfähige Lösungen für die Praxis zu erarbeiten. Gelungene Kommunikation als Vorbedingung nimmt dabei eine zentrale Position ein. Dieser Band setzt deshalb den Fokus auf unterschiedliche Aspekte des Faktums Migration, um sowohl den Status quo als auch die Bedingungen für erfolgversprechende Wege in die Zukunft auszuloten - sowohl in der theoretischen Reflexion als auch in der praktischen Anwendung.

Sie werden einfach nicht beachtet oder sollen nicht gesehen werden, wie etwa illegale Zeltcamps, besetzte Fabriken oder versteckte Brachgebiete. In Literatur und Film werden diese Räume aus der Perspektive ihrer Bewohner_innen - Geflüchteten oder Randfiguren - erzählt und auf spezifische Weise sichtbar gemacht.
    Die Beiträge des Bandes bringen mittels kultur- und literaturwissenschaftlicher, stadt- und migrationssoziologischer Analysen diese urbanen Räume und ihre jeweiligen Narrative zum Vorschein.

    Using a gravity approach, we explore determinants and dynamics of refugee migration using a gendered cross-national dyadic dataset on refugee movements for the years 2000-2015. Along three dimensions (push, pull and cost factors), we analyze whether there are heterogeneous effects of ight determinants for men and women. Our results suggest that within the push dimension there is only little difference in gender-specific responses. Most prominently, women react relatively stronger to the existence of sexual violence as a con ict strategy. When it comes to dyadic factors, we find that distance is a decisive factor for men and women. The most gender-sensitive dimension appears to be the pull factors: Neighboring countries attract more women in comparison to men as well as to non-neighbors. For non-neighbors, female ows are more sensitive to political stability, women's rights and the economic situation of the destination.

    Income inequality is a major public concern in many Western countries. The problem has intensified with the recent high immigration rates in Europe, particularly from outside the continent. However, the linkage between refugee immigration and income inequality in host countries has not been adequately investigated. This article employs a two-step approach to examine whether and to what extent refugee immigration affects income inequality. The first step is a literature review, the second the formulation and utilization of a classic production model with labor sub-divided into different qualification groups. After a discussion of the theoretical implications of the model, it is then applied to Germany’s refugee immigration situation in 2015 and 2016. The results suggest that a rise in mostly low-skilled immigration may be accompanied by an increase in income inequality. The linkage between the concepts highlights the need for further research as well as for efforts to curb uncontrolled, low-skilled immigration.

    Using the panel data from 1995 to 2019, this paper investigates the labor market integration of non-EU immigrants in Germany. The existing evidence shows that the economic outcomes of migrants are far behind natives. However, immigrants are a heterogeneous group in terms of their motives for migration and skills composition. In this paper, I disentangle immigrants into refugees and other migrants and compare the employment probability gap between refugees, other migrants, and natives. I also examine whether refugees have a lower employment outcome than other migrants and to what extent the level of education, language proficiency, health status, years since migration, and cohort effects explain the employment gap between the refugees and other migrants. The result confirms that refugees and other migrants are less likely to be employed than natives and the employment gap is much higher for refugees. I also find evidence of heterogeneity across gender. Other migrant men do not significantly differ from native men in the probability of being employed. In contrast, refugee women have an economic disadvantage than other migrant women and native women. I find no evidence that health status differences attribute to the employment gap between refugees, other migrants, and natives. Finally, this paper highlights the importance of the migration category when assessing the integration of immigrants into the labor market.

    Τhe study examines whether adverse working conditions for immigrants in Greece bear an association with deteriorated physical health and increased levels of depression during 2018 and 2019. Findings indicate that workers with no written contract of employment, receiving hourly wages lower than the national hourly minimum wages, and experiencing insults and/or threats in their present job experience worse physical health and increased levels of depression. The study found that the inexistence of workplace contracts, underpayment, and verbal abuse in the workplace may coexist. An increased risk of underpayment and verbal abuse reveals itself when workers do not have a contract of employment and vice versa. Immigrant workers without a job contract might experience a high degree of workplace precariousness and exclusion from health benefits and insurance. Immigrant workers receiving a wage lower than the corresponding minimum potentially do not secure a living income, resulting in unmet needs and low investments in health. Workplace abuse might correspond with vulnerability related to humiliating treatment. These conditions can negatively impact workers' physical health and foster depression. Policies should promote written employment contracts and ensure a mechanism for workers to register violations of fair practices.
