Candidates in Conflict provides a new perspective for understanding presidential debates by analyzing the three televised debates in 1992 among candidates Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Ross Perot. Viewed by millions and now an expected part of presidential campaigns, the debates captured the attention of the nation. The authors show that presidential candidates, by using persuasive attack and defense strategies, are able either to undermine (in the case of their opponents) or to preserve (for themselves) the vital issues of personal credibility and policy matters. The book includes complete transcripts of the debates

pt. I. Analysis of the 1992 presidential debates -- Traditional approaches to presidential debates -- Investigating persuasive attack and defense -- Persuasive attack: Bush the primary target, Perot relatively unscathed -- Persuasive defense: Bush on the defensive -- Evaluation: how do the candidates stack up? -- pt. II. Transcripts of the 1992 presidential debates: Bush, Clinton, and Perot -- Debate one: October 11, 1992 -- Debate two: October 15, 1992 -- Debate three: October 19, 1992 -- Appendix 1: Procedures employed in the study -- Appendix 2: Sample coded transcript: excerpts from debate

"The presidential election of 2012 was among the most important in American history, both for the policies that will persist due to its result as well as the national political transformation it portends. The contest's outcome was the product of complex and fast-moving societal changes--demographic, technological, and economic--surfacing in American society. This volume, consisting of writings by leading scholars of American politics and the American presidency, examines the 2012 presidential election in its many facets. Particularly prominent in these analyses are: psychology, religion, and culture, rhetoric, and voting"--

A Rhetoric of Divisive Partisanship: The 2016 American Presidential Campaign Disourse of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump examines the campaign speeches of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump as they targeted members of the American public that were ideologically different but equally emotionally vulnerable. Each appealed to marginalized segments of the electorate, groups at opposite ends of the political spectrum, joined through a shared distrust and fear of politics instead of political or even party affiliation. This book addresses how Sanders and Trump polarized and reinforced their respective bases as "outsiders" and relied on anti-establishment arguments and discussions grounded in personal attacks against "enemies." Colleen Elizabeth Kelley expands on previous ideas about dialogue and political talk and asserts that, rather than serving as a model of civic and civil discourse, the rhetoric of Sanders and Trump was reactionary and divisive, beginning with different intentions and producing different results--back cover

"Donald Trump's campaign for the presidency has been called "the single strangest development in American history" (Michael Gerson), and that is in large part because of Trump's use of rhetoric in appealing to the white working class. He won the presidency largely because of his rhetoric, and despite committing gaffe after gaffe, violating every norm identified by pundits and scholars alike about how a presidential candidate should talk, and presenting a message that was antithetical to the rhetorical vision of the greatest conservative hero of the last forty years, Ronald Reagan. Robert C. Rowland argues that Trump's rhetoric is defined by the themes of nationalist populism and by a rhetorical persona casting himself as first an outsider hero who could achieve near magical results and later, after assuming the presidency, as a more radical version of that persona, moving toward the role of heroic strongman. Rowland shows that, while these three elements are found in all of Trump's campaign and presidential rhetoric, there has been development over time toward a more extreme variant of all of these themes. The Rhetoric of Donald Trump traces the evolution and radicalization of Trump's message in rallies, in formal campaign settings, in policy and ceremonial speeches, and in his tens of thousands of tweets. This is an essential book for understanding what Trump reveals about the status of the modern presidency and the role of rhetoric in the American political system"--
