    "Ce volume veut revisiter et tenter de saisir la complexité de la figure du souverain en Europe à l'époque moderne en confrontant plusieurs approches disciplinaires. Née dans un contexte de profondes mutations politico-religieuses engendrées notamment par la naissance de monarchies territoriales centralisées et autonomes, par la Réforme protestante et par les guerres de religion, la notion de souveraineté est à la fois le lieu d'innovations juridiques et philosophiques et le lieu de nombreuses tensions. Au moment même où la doctrine de la souveraineté prend son essor, les figures-types du bon prince, du despote et du tyran, héritées de l'Antiquité et du Moyen Âge, ressurgissent en effet avec une nouvelle acuité. Devant les dangers qui peuvent naître de la rencontre entre une puissance souveraine et une volonté humaine déréglée par les passions, les écrits philosophiques, politiques et littéraires témoignent tous de la nécessité à la fois de remettre en jeu et de réinterpréter ces trois modèles de gouvernants pour tenter de limiter ou de réguler le pouvoir absolu du monarque. Par ailleurs, la réalité du règne des reines vient confronter la théorie de la souveraineté avec la représentation des sexes chez des penseurs majoritairement attachés au système patriarcal. C'est donc à un difficile exercice d'équilibre et d'adaptation que s'adonnent Bodin, Buchanan, Shakespeare, Samuel Daniel, Hobbes ou encore Montesquieu, durant cette période clé. L'image qu'ils nous donnent du souverain n'est ni cohérente ni stable, mais fissurée par les contradictions."--Page 4 of cover

    Presents an account of the renowned essayist, Isaiah Berlin's key insights about the history of ideas in the period that he made his own - the Romantic age. Distilling his formative early work in the history of ideas, this book was written for a series of lectures at Bryn Mawr College in 1952, It is sometimes thought that the renowned essayist Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997) was incapable of writing a big book. But in fact he developed some of his most important essays - including "Two Concepts of Liberty" and "Historical Inevitability" - from a book-length manuscript that he intended to publish, but later set aside. Published here for the first time, "Political Ideas in the Romantic Age" is the only book in which Berlin lays out in one continuous account most of his key insights about the history of ideas in the period that he made his own - the Romantic age. Distilling his formative early work in the history of ideas, the book also contains much that is not found elsewhere in his writings. The last of Berlin's posthumous books, it is of great interest both for his treatment of the subject and for what it reveals about his intellectual development. Written for a series of lectures at Bryn Mawr College in 1952, and heavily revised and expanded by Berlin afterward, the book argues that the political ideas of the Romantic age are still largely our own - down to the language and metaphors they are expressed in
