    How to Reada Poem is an introduction to creative reading, the art of coming up with something to say about a text. It presents a new method for learning and teaching the skills of poetic interpretation, providing its readers with practical steps they can use to construct perceptive, inventive readings of any poem they might read. The Introduction sets out the aims of the book and provides some basic operating principles for applying the seven steps. In each subsequent chapter, the step is introduced and explained, relevant points of interpretative theory and methodology are discussed and illustrated with multiple examples, and the step is put into practice in a final section. Through these final sections, step by step, the book develops an extended reading of a single poem, Letitia Landon's "Lines Written under a Picture of a Girl Burning a Love-Letter"from 1822. That reading is sustained across the whole arc of the book, providing a detailed worked example of how to read a poem. This accessible and enjoyable guide is the ideal introduction to anyone approaching the detailed study of poetry for the first time and offersvaluable theoretical insights for those more experienced in the area.

Epilogue: ‘It is strange.’ This book explores the ways in which poetic inspiration came to be associated with madness in early nineteenth-century Britain. By examining the works of poets such as Barrett, Browning, Clare, Tennyson, Townshend, and the Spasmodics in relation to the burgeoning asylum system and shifting medical discourses of the period, it investigates the ways in which Britain’s post-Romantic poets understood their own poetic vocations within a cultural context that insistently linked poetic talent with illness and insanity. Joseph Crawford examines the popularity of mesmerism among the writers of the era, as an alternative system of medicine that provided a more sympathetic account of the nature of poetic genius, and investigates the persistent tension, found throughout the literary and medical writings of the period, between the Romantic ideal of the poet as a transcendent visionary genius and the ‘medico-psychological’ conception of poets as mere case studies in abnormal neurological development

This collection brings together his essays on poetry, religion, and the intersections between them, with a particular focus on Jewish literature. He explores the definition of Jewish literature, the relationship between poetry and politics, and the future of literary reputation in the age of the internet. Several essays look at the way Jewish writers such as Stefan Zweig and Isaac Deutscher, who coined the phrase “the non†‘Jewish Jew,” have dealt with politics. Kirsch also examines questions of spirituality and morality in the writings of contemporary poets, including Christian Wiman, Kay Ryan, and Seamus Heaney. Following the footsteps of Spanish philosopher Maria Zambrano, Anne Mounic explores the relationships between poetry and philosophy, trying to understand why Plato dismissed poets from his Republic and thus drew an enduring dividing line between reason and myth, reason and imagination. Various instances of poetic dissidence are analysed from a poet’s viewpoint, and the connections between existential philosophy and poetry are highlighted. From Kierkegaard to Lequier, via Shestov, the common ground is the attention to the beginning ‒ the act of subjective consciousness shaping time and opening toward the future and freedom. Works by various poets are discussed. A la suite de certaines analyses de la philosophe espagnole Maria Zambrano, Anne Mounic explore les relations entre poésie et philosophie, s’interrogeant sur les raisons du rejet des poètes par Platon qui dissocia ainsi durablement la raison du mythe, la raison de l’imagination.     Hymnische Dichtung gehört zu den ältesten Formen poetischen Ausdrucks. Götter werden angefleht, Helden besungen, die Schönheit gepriesen. Die Texte gestalten zu diesem Zweck ein Sprechen an den Grenzen des Menschen: Sie behaupten, das Äußerste zum Ausdruck zu bringen, was ein Mensch erfahren kann, in anthropologischer, sozialer, formaler, poetologischer und kommunikativer Hinsicht. Hymnische Dichtung ist daher liminale Lyrik. - Die Traditionslinie beginnt in der deutschen Literatur im 18. Jahrhundert bei Klopstock, Goethe, Novalis und Hölderlin. Im 19. Jahrhundert umfasst sie etwa Heine, Platen und Nietzsche; im 20. Jahrhundert wird sie u.a. von George, Rilke, Lasker-Schüler, Celan oder Bachmann fortgeführt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt diese Geschichte hymnischer Dichtung in der deutschen Literatur erstmals ebenso historisch umfassend wie systematisch präzise. Heffernan's focus is not only the material organization of printed poetry, but also how those conventions and innovations of arrangement contributed to vernacular poetic craft, the consolidation of ideals of individual authorship, and centuries of literary history.The arrangement of printed compilations contains a largely unstudied and undertheorized archive of poetic form, Heffernan argues. In an evolving system of textual transmission, compilers were experimenting with how to contain individual poems within larger volumes. By paying attention to how they navigated and shaped the exchanges between poems and their organization, she reveals how we can witness the basic power of imaginative writing over the material text.Making the Miscellany is also a study of how this history of textual design has been differently told by the distinct disciplines of bibliography or book history and literary studies, each of which has handled—and obscured—the formal qualities of early modern poetry compilations and the practices that produced them. Revisiting these editorial and critical approaches, this book recovers a moment when compilers, poets, and readers were alert to a poetics of organization that exceeded the limits of the individual poem

    Reflexionen über Dichtung, über Voraussetzungen, Funktionen und Effekte dichterischer Texte, über poetische Gattungen, Darstellungsweisen und Kommunikationsformen, über die Beziehung zwischen dichterischer Rede und ihren Gegenständen haben die Entstehung dichterischer Werke seit der Antike begleitet. Die Vorstellungen davon, was überhaupt Dichtung ist, unterliegen dabei in hohem Maße dem historischen Wandel, der kulturell-diskursiv bedingten Ausdifferenzierung. Die Beiträge des Lexikons zu antiken, mittelalterlichen, frühneuzeitlichen sowie modernen und zeitgenössischen Autoren von Poetiken bzw. poetologischen Texten illustrieren auf vielfältige Weise, dass ein anhaltender und anhaltend nachdrücklicher Bedarf an kritischer Reflexion über das Dichterische (Literarische, Poetische) bestand und bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart hinein besteht. Das Lexikon enthält mehr als 400 Artikel zu Poetiken und poetologischen Texten aus allen Epochen der Literatur der westlichen Hemisphäre. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der poetologischen Reflexion der Moderne, besonders auf Autorenpoetiken sowie auf der deutschsprachigen Literatur.

As an emerging empirical scientific world view and a rising Cartesian dualist ontology transformed the ancient hope for the resurrection of the flesh into the fantasy of a soul or mind living on separately from any body, literature complicated the terms of the debate. Such poets as Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Jonson picked up the discarded idea of the resurrection of the flesh and bent it from an apocalyptic future into the here and now to imagine the self already infused with the strange, vibrant materiality of the resurrection body.Fate of the Flesh explores what happens when seventeenth-century poets posit a resurrection body within the historical person. These poets see the resurrection body as the precondition for the social person’s identities and forms of agency and yet as deeply other to all such identities and agencies, an alien within the self that both enables and undercuts life as a social person. This perspective leads seventeenth-century poets to a compelling awareness of the unsettling materiality within the heart of the self and allows them to re-imagine agency, selfhood, and the natural world in its light. By developing a poetics that seeks a deranging materiality within the self, these poets anticipate twentieth-century “avant-garde” poetics. They frame their poems neither as simple representation nor as beautiful objects but as a form of social praxis that creates new communities of readers and writers assembled around a new experience of self-as-body mediated by poetry
