Covering the period from the Seven Years' War to the foundation of the German nation, Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756-1871) explores how the nation was imagined by different groups, at different times, and in connection with other ideologies. Between them the eight chapters in this volume explore the connections between religion, nationalism and patriotism, and individual chapters show how marginalised voices such as women and Jews contributed to discourses on national identity. Finally, the chapters also consider the role of memory in constructing ideas of nationhood.     Main description: Die Konstruktion nationaler Identität während des Ersten Weltkrieges wird in dieser Studie am Beispiel repräsentativer französischer Kriegsromane untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt der Textinterpretation steht die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Identität und Abgrenzung. Dabei zeigt sich, daß die identitätskonstituierende Funktion des Feindbildes relativiert werden muß. Anhand der bisher unbeachteten Rezeption der Kriegsliteratur läßt sich der besondere Stellenwert der Frontschriftsteller in der französischen Öffentlichkeit erklären, die hier erstmals vergleichend den zivilen Schriftstellern gegenübergestellt werden

    Main description: This study examines the construction of national identity in the First World War as exemplified by representative French war novels. Central to the textual interpretation is the question of the connection between identity and (self-)demarcation. It transpires that the function of the image of the enemy as a constitutive factor in identity formation needs to be relativized. With reference to the hitherto neglected reception of war literature, it is possible to explain the special status accorded by the French public to writers active at the war front, who are compared here for the first time with civilian writers
