    "Combining cognitive and evolutionary research with traditional humanist methods, Nancy Easterlin here demonstrates how a biocultural perspective in theory and criticism opens up new possibilities for literary interpretation. Easterlin maintains that the goal of literary interpretation is still of central intellectual and social value. Taking an open yet judicious approach, she argues, however, that literary interpretation stands to gain dramatically from a fair-minded and creative application of cognitive and evolutionary research. This work does just that, expounding a biocultural method that charts a middle course between overly reductive approaches to literature and traditionalists who see the sciences as a threat to the humanities. Easterlin applies her biocultural method to four major subfields within literary studies: new historicism, ecocriticism, cognitive approaches, and evolutionary approaches. After a thorough review of each subfield, she reconsiders it in light of relevant research in cognitive and evolutionary psychology and provides a textual analysis of literary works from the romantic era to the present, including William Wordsworth's "Simon Lee" and the Lucy poems, Mary Robinson's "Old Barnard," Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Dejection: An Ode," D. H. Lawrence's The Fox, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, and Raymond Carver's "I Could See the Smallest Things."     Die Artusromane des Pleiers sind bekannt für ihre ausführliche Darstellung des höfischen Zeremoniells, das in dieser Studie erstmals als Konfliktkommunikation beschrieben wird. Am "Garel vom blühenden Tal" und am "Tandareis und Flordibel" wird die literarische Verhandlung der symbolischen Kommunikation nachvollzogen, die die adlige Gewalt reguliert und legitimiert. Der Autor zeigt, dass der Pleier zwei Modelle mittelalterlichen Konfliktmanagements im Gefüge des Artusromans simuliert: die Schlacht als Rechtsentscheid und das Königsgericht. Die Romane des Pleiers einmal nicht in ein literarisches Bezugssystem zu stellen, sondern sie als Poetisierung juridischer Diskurse zu lesen, ermöglicht einen ungeahnten Zugang zum Artusroman des 13. Jahrhunderts.

    In this essay the ambiguous afterlife of the character Judith and the eponymous book as cultural artefact is explored. The very rich and extensive impact on cultural and social imaginaries by the narrative and character of Judith provides an entry point by which to consider the social, cultural, and ideological work performed by the text. By drawing on a neglected trajectory in the interpretation of Judith, that of its imperialising force, in which Judith functions de facto like other Greek and Roman female deities who act as city protectresses, and later as the Virgin, it is clear that Judith functions as cypher for imperial symbolisms. By employing new historicism and its attendant theoretical assumptions, the figure of Judith becomes the occasion for an experiment in theory and method, on the borderline between cultural discourses and theories of religion. The text is read as a site for the operation of discourse and ideology, and as agency-medium in the imagining of history. When the text is “read” in light of the reception history of both text and image, the text reading denotes the problematic conceptual relationship between theology, religion, and culture. By bringing such questions to bear on the text, this paper explores the borderlines between culture and religion, particularly when done in connection with a text which itself straddles the border between canonical and extracanonical. Judith, the narrative and the figure, serves here as test case for widening the questions that should be brought to bear on ancient “religious” literature.
