    This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c. 1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic.

    Convinced that sexual immorality and unstable gender norms were endangering national recovery after World War One, German lawmakers drafted a constitution in 1919 legalizing the censorship of movies and pulp fiction, and prioritizing social rights over individual rights. These provisions enabled legislations to adopt two national censorship laws intended to regulate the movie industry and retail trade in pulp fiction. Both laws had their ideological origins in grass-roots anti-'trash' campaigns inspired by early encounters with commercial mass culture and Germany's federalist structure. Before the war, activists characterized censorship as a form of youth protection. Afterwards, they described it as a form of social welfare. Local activists and authorities enforcing the decisions of federal censors made censorship familiar and respectable even as these laws became a lightning rod for criticism of the young republic. Nazi leaders subsequently refashioned anti-'trash' rhetoric to justify the stringent censorship regime they imposed on Germany

Theoretical inquiry into the diversity and interconnectedness of European colonial histories and postcolonial conditions combines with new approaches to conceptualizing internal European (post-) colonialisms, and case studies and comparative studies of the literature and culture of a broad range of countries and language areas, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, the former Habsburg region and the Baltics, along with the German language area, Britain and France. Authors consider the repercussions of overseas colonialism across Europe, postcolonial migration, multiculturalism and postcolonial politics of memory, as well as the interface between colonialism and nationalism and the innovative cross-mapping of postcolonial research and Memory Studies. Transnational and comparative approaches are used to shed new light on the relationship between global developments and regional specificities, along with the interaction between (post-) colonial memory and (national) identity from the nineteenth century to the present day

    This volume makes a substantial contribution to developing Comparative Postcolonial Studies within Europe. Theoretical inquiry into the diversity and interconnectedness of European colonial histories and postcolonial conditions combines with new approaches to conceptualizing internal European (post-) colonialisms, and case studies and comparative studies of the literature and culture of a broad range of countries and language areas, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, the former Habsburg region and the Baltics, along with the German language area, Britain and France. Authors consider the repercussions of overseas colonialism across Europe, postcolonial migration, multiculturalism and postcolonial politics of memory, as well as the interface between colonialism and nationalism and the innovative cross-mapping of postcolonial research and Memory Studies. Transnational and comparative approaches are used to shed new light on the relationship between global developments and regional specificities, along with the interaction between (post-) colonial memory and (national) identity from the nineteenth century to the present day.

This was the eighteenth-century Italian aristocratic model of marriage, characterized by the presence of the cicisbeo, the official escort of another man's wife. Did this delineate a clear and brazen sexual depravity or rather a complex and refined social institution, revealing many aspects of Italian civilization in the Age of the Enlightenment? Not only was the presence of a cicisbeo part of a matrimonial, family model; it was also an important factor socially and politically. In a period in which the presence of women at parties was sought...at the theatre and in salons...the lady's escort played an essential part in promoting a couple's social life. Indeed, the company and friendship (and perhaps love) which bound a lady and her escort occurred with the knowledge and under the control of the families of the interested parties. Of course, this 'triangular' arrangement was not unproblematic. The existence of a third party posed a threat to conjugal fidelity and the legitimacy of offspring and, towards the early nineteenth century, when the ideals of Romanticism and the French Revolution were popular there was a rapid decline in the practice.
