Der Fokus liegt dabei auf problemorientierten Darstellungen, die den neuesten Forschungsstand widerspiegeln. The self-perception of comparative studies has changed markedly in recent years. The classic areas and fields of activities face a reorientation towards cultural studies and an opening up for questions and issues relating to globalisation theories. This volume provides a survey of the history of general and comparative literary studies and at the same time takes stock of its current situation in a global context. The volume focuses on problem-oriented approaches that reflect the state of current research.

Sheep farming in Australia, transforming the land as it dispossessed the native inhabitants, became a symbol of (new, white) nationhood. The transportation of plants (and animals) into and across the Pacific, even where benign or nostalgic, had widespread environmental effects, despite the hopes of the acclimatisation societies involved, and, by extension, of missionary societies ¿planting the seeds of Christianity.¿ In the Caribbean, plantation slavery pushed back the ¿jungle¿ (itself an imported word) and erased the indigenous occupants ¿ one example of the righteous, biblically justified cultivation of the wilderness. In Australia, artistic depictions of landscape, often driven by romantic and g̀othic¿ aesthetics, encoded contradictory settler mindsets, and literary representations of colonial Kenya mask the erasure of ecosystems. Chapters on the early twentieth century (in Canada, Kenya, and Queensland) indicate increased awareness of the value of species-preservation, conservation, and disease control. The tension between traditional and Èuroscientific¿ attitudes towards conservation is revealed in attitudes towards control of the Ganges, while the urge to resource exploitation has produced critical disequilibrium in Papua New Guinea. Broader concerns centering on ecotourism and ecocriticism are treated in further essays summarising how the dominant West has alienated ǹature¿ from human beings through commodification in the service of capitalist p̀rogress¿

    Kafkas Texte sind Institutionengeschichten. Sie handeln von Ämtern, Prozessen und ihren Akten, von Volkskunde, Kaisertum und Legenden. Und sie handeln von Figuren, die von solchen Einrichtungen magisch angezogen werden und kaum in der Lage sind, ihr Dasein aus sich selbst heraus zu sichern. Kafkas Institutionen sind so einschließend wie ausschließend: Immer markieren sie eine Schwelle, sei es jene zwischen Autonomie und Zwang, jene zwischen Literatur und Leben oder schließlich die ihrer eigenen Unterscheidung, die Schwelle von Institution und Individuum. Kafkas Literatur ist eine Literatur der Institutionen, insofern sie diese Schwellenkunde betreibt. Die hier versammelten Beiträge lesen Kafkas Texte als Poetik der Institutionen, sie fragen nach den ordnungsstiftenden Funktionen für sein Schreiben, sie folgen den Wegen seiner Figuren, den Gängen, Vorzimmern, Lifts etc., und sie gehen seinen literarischen Verfahren auf den Grund: den Rhetoriken, Darstellungsweisen und Abläufen seiner Institutionengeschichten.

    In Arthur Schnitzlers Traumnovelle und in Stanley Kubricks filmischer Adaption Eyes Wide Shut ist die Maske zentrales Darstellungsmittel von Schaulust, Blick und Scham. So, wie die Maske das Gesicht verhüllt, so versucht der Beschämte, sich vor dem enthüllenden Blick des Anderen zu verbergen. Ausgehend von der aktuellen psychoanalytischen Scham-Theorie wird hier erstmals gezeigt, wie die spezifische Medialität von Scham und Maske nicht nur die Figuren, sondern auch die ästhetischen Strategien in Text und Film maßgeblich prägt und reflektiert. Dies betrifft u.a. die Wahrnehmung des Zuschauers/Lesers, die filmische und literarische Inszenierung des Blicks, die Visualität und die Frage der Darstellbarkeit.
