    This open access book explores how young people engage with chemical substances in their everyday lives. It builds upon and supplements a large body of literature on young people’s use of drugs and alcohol to highlight the subjectivities and socialities that chemical use enables across diverse socio-cultural settings, illustrating how young people seek to avoid harm, while harnessing the beneficial effects of chemical use. The book is based on multi-sited anthropological research in Southeast Asia, Europe and the US, and presents insights from collaborative and contrasting analysis. Hardon brings new perspectives to debates across drug policy studies, pharmaceutical cultures and regulation, science and technology studies, and youth and precarity in post-industrial societies.

    Es geht um sehr viel Geld. Mehr als 16 Milliarden Euro haben die Menschen in Deutschland im Jahr 2019 beim Glücksspiel verloren. Nach jahrzehntelangem Ringen hat sich die Politik jetzt dazu entschlossen, den Glücksspielmarkt im Internet zu legalisieren - die Suchtexpert*innen sind alarmiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht Gerd Möll den Glücksspieldiskurs in verschiedenen Landesparlamenten und im Bundestag. Seine Analyse zeigt, dass »Glücksspielsucht« einerseits als medizinischer Sachverhalt präsentiert wird, andererseits aber auf moralischen Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen beruht. Das Problemmuster »Glücksspielsucht« wird dabei für unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Interessen instrumentalisiert und legitimiert darüber hinaus ein neues Kontrollregime.

    What does it mean to personalise cancer medicine? Personalised cancer medicine explores this question by foregrounding the experiences of patients, carers and practitioners in the UK. Drawing on an ethnographic study of cancer research and care, we trace patients’, carers’ and practitioners’ efforts to access and interpret novel genomic tests, information and treatments as they craft personal and collective futures. Exploring a series of case studies of diagnostic tests, research and experimental therapies, the book charts the different kinds of care and work involved in efforts to personalise cancer medicine and the ways in which benefits and opportunities are unevenly realised and distributed. Investigating these experiences against a backdrop of policy and professional accounts of the ‘big’ future of personalised healthcare, the authors show how hopes invested and care realised via personalised cancer medicine are multifaceted, contingent and, at times, frustrated in the everyday complexities of living and working with cancer. Tracing the difficult and painstaking work involved in making sense of novel data, results and predictions, we show the different futures crafted across policy, practice and personal accounts. This is the only book to investigate in depth how personalised cancer medicine is reshaping the futures of cancer patients, carers and professionals in uneven and partial ways. Applying a feminist lens that focuses on work and care, inclusions and exclusions, we explore the new kinds of expertise, relationships and collectives involved making personalised cancer medicine work in practice and the inconsistent ways their work is recognised and valued in the process.

Nicht nur, aber auch anlässlich von Corona denkt Ro-land Reichenbach über die Chancen und die Überschätzung der Digitalisierung im Bildungsbereich nach. Kris Decker, der erste Merkur-Preis-Träger, hat über das Klima promoviert, allerdings aus his-torisch-ethnografischer Sicht, und fragt sich nicht zuletzt, welche Form von Wissen in diesem Be-reich produziert wird. In ihrer Literaturkolumne schreibt Eva Geulen über einen neuerdings diskutierten politisierten Blick auf das Tun der Literaturwissenschaft. Andreas Eckert informiert in seiner Geschichtskolumne über das Wirken der 1919 gegründeten International Labour Organization (ILO). Samir Sellami porträ-tiert den theorie- und experimentierfreudigen Autor Fred Moten. Stefanie Gänger und Jürgen Osterhammel sehen in der Corona-Krise einen willkommenen Anlass, noch einmal neu über den Sinn und mögliche Grenzen der Globalgeschichte nachzudenken. Markus Linden nimmt den Übergangsbereich von Konservatismus und Neuer Rechter und dabei vor allem wichtige Scharnier-Autoren und -Institutionen in den Blick. Corey Robin kritisiert die auch und gerade angesichts der Corona-Krise fatale Fixierung auf die Elite-Institutionen unter den US-Universitäten. Und Robin Detje zeigt sich getroffen vom unsolidarischen Verhaltens so vieler in der Corona-Krise.

This is the first volume to introduce comprehensively the ways in which interdisciplinary thinking across the humanities and social sciences might contribute to, critique and develop medical understanding of the human individually and collectively. The thirty-six newly commissioned chapters range widely within and across disciplinary fields, always alert to the intersections between medicine, as broadly defined, and critical thinking. Each chapter offers suggestions for further reading on the issues raised, and each section concludes with an Afterword, written by a leading critic, outlining future possibilities for cutting-edge work in this area. Topics covered in this volume include: the affective body, biomedicine, blindness, breath, disability, early modern medical practice, fatness, the genome, language, madness, narrative, race, systems biology, performance, the postcolonial, public health, touch, twins, voice and wonder.
