"Le croirait-on? La mort de Mallarmé, le 9 septembre 1898, a occupé dans la presse une place plus importante que l'assassinat, le lendemain, de l'impératrice d'Autriche. Alors que Sissi fait la une des journaux pendant quelques jours, la disparition du poète suscite, en province comme à Paris, en France comme à l'étranger, de très nombreuses réactions qui se prolongent, en s'espaçant, jusqu'au premier anniversaire de sa mort. Ces nécrologies et études de fond, dont beaucoup étaient encore inédites, notamment celles d'auteurs étrangers, sont pour la première fois réunies. De ces témoignages se dégage une image contrastée de Mallarmé. La vision d'un poète obscur, décadent, retranché du monde et parfait représentant de l'ancienne école, est toujours dominante, mais celles d'un homme ouvert sur son temps et d'un défricheur de nouveaux horizons commencent à s'affirmer. Et si nombreux sont ceux qui doutent de la destinée posthume de l'oeuvre, il en est de plus lucides qui reconnaissent dans le rêve d'art de Mallarmé 'un admirable pressentiment'"-- Would you believe it? The death of Mallarmé, on the 9th of September, 1898, occupied a more important place in the press than the assassination of the Empress of Austria the following day. While Sissi made headlines for a few days, his disappearance from this world arouses many reactions, both in France and abroad, until the first anniversary of his death. These obituaries and background studies (many of which were still unpublished, especially those of foreign authors) are for the first time united. From these testimonies a contrasting image of Mallarmé emerges; the vision of an obscure, decadent poet, cut off from the world and a perfect representative of the old school, is still dominant, but those of a man open to his time and a new horizon are beginning to assert themselves. And though there are so many who doubt the posthumous destiny of the work, there are more lucid ones who recognize an 'admirable presentiment' in the dream of art of Mallarmé
