Methodologically, the companion considers Surrealism's many achievements, but also its historical shortcomings, to illuminate its connections to the historical and cultural moment(s) from which it originated and to assess both the ways in which it still shapes our world in inspiring ways and the ways in which it might appear problematic as we look back at it from a twenty-first-century vantage point. Contributions from experienced scholars will enable professors to teach the subject more broadly, by opening their eyes to aspects of the field that are on the margins of their expertise, and it will enable scholars to identify new areas of study in their own work, by indicating lines of research at a tangent to their own. The companion will reflect the interdisciplinarity of Surrealism by incorporating discussions pertaining to the visual arts, as well as literature, film, and political and intellectual history

    Despite the recent turn to affects and emotions in the humanities and despite the unceasing popularity of romantic and erotic love as a motif in fictional works of all genres, the subject has received surprisingly little attention in academic studies of contemporary drama. Love in Contemporary British Drama reflects the appeal of love as a topic and driving force in dramatic works with in-depth analyses of eight pivotal plays from the past three decades.Following an interdisciplinary and historical approach, the study collects and condenses theories of love from philosophy and sociology to derive persisting discourses and to examine their reoccurrence and transformation in contemporary plays. Special emphasis is put on narratives of love's compensatory function and precariousness and on how modifications of these narratives epitomise the peculiarities of emotional life in the social and cultural context of the present.Based on the assumption that drama is especially inclined to draw on shared narratives for representations of love, the book demonstrates that love is both a window to remnants of the past in the present and a proper subject matter for drama in times in which the suitability of the dramatic form has been questioned

Der Text zeichnet ihren Werdegang als Verfasserin von Kriegsliteratur für Frauen während der Kaiserzeit sowie als langjähriger Drehbuchautorin nach. Die untersuchten literarischen Texte und Archivalien sind die Grundlage für die Erforschung ihrer geistig-sozial-künstlerischen Entwicklung sowie ihrer ‚Weltanschauung‘. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann Fritz Lang schuf sie in den 1920er und frühen 1930er Jahren Meilensteine der Filmgeschichte wie Die Nibelungen, Metropolis und M. Während der NS-Zeit war sie viel beschäftigt und trug damit zur Funktionsfähigkeit der Kulturbranche bei.

    Tragisches und Komisches sind, seit von ihnen die Rede ist, im Gegensatz zu einander gesehen worden. Wird Tragisches mit Komischem verbunden, wäre zu erwarten, dass sie einander schwächen. Tragikomische Situationen überraschen damit, dass die gegensätzlichen Qualitäten einander steigern. Unter welchen Bedingungen kann dies eintreten? Andreas Dorschel richtet die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Verhältnis zur Zeit: Komisches ist im Moment zuhause, Tragisches beschreibt einen großen Bogen. In seiner Studie schlägt er vor, Tragikomisches aus der Perspektive einer Poetik zu erfassen, mithilfe der Kategorien ›Ironie‹, ›Intervention‹ und ›Travestie‹. Inwiefern diese Aufschluss geben, erkundet der Autor an Beispielen aus der Antike, der Frühen Neuzeit und der Moderne: Euripides’ »Bakchai« (erstmals aufgeführt 405 v. Chr.), Shakespeares »Tragedy of King Lear« (gedruckt 1623) und Kafkas »Der Process« (verfasst 1914/15). Das Augenmerk, welches diese erste philosophische Monographie zur Frage der Tragikomik auf die Literatur lenkt, schließt nicht aus, dass es auch im Leben manchmal tragikomisch zugeht. Doch dessen Konstellationen zeigen sich tragikomisch wohl erst dann, wenn auf sie in bestimmten Weisen geblickt wird, die ›poetisch‹ zu nennen sind.

The fabled "City of Light" had 7 mosques for its 40,000 Muslims, some of whom served in government, as well as 3 Franciscan cathedrals funded in part by the emperor, Jewish synagogues, and centers for Nestorian Christians, Hindus, Taoists, Manicheans, Jains, etc. As Franciscan Bishop Andrew of Perugia wrote in 1322, "Tis a fact that in this vast empire, there are people of every nation under heaven, and every sect, and all and sundry are allowed to live freely according to their creed."In 2021, UNESCO designated "Quanzhou, Emporium of the World," as a world heritage site, and the city is now the hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, the 21st Century Silk Road, which was inspired by ancient Quanzhou

The best lesbian historical novels are conscientious and buoyant as they engage critical historiographical questions, but Novel Approaches also discusses the class and race biases that weigh on the genre.     Palgrave Handbook of Critical Posthumanism is a major reference work on the paradigm emerging from the challenges to humanism, humanity, and the human posed by the erosion of the traditional demarcations between the human and nonhuman. This handbook surveys and speculates on the ways in which the posthumanist paradigm emerged, transformed, and might further develop across the humanities. With its focus on the posthuman as a figure, on posthumanism as a social discourse, and on posthumanisation as an on-going historical and ontological process, the volume highlights the relationship between the humanities and sciences. The essays engage with posthumanism in connection with subfields like the environmental humanities, health humanities, animal studies, and disability studies. The book also traces the historical representations and understanding of posthumanism across time. Additionally, the contributions address genre and forms such as autobiography, games, art, film, museums, and topics such as climate change, speciesism, anthropocentrism, and biopolitics to name a few.     The book examines prominent literary works from the past two decades by Russian women writers dealing with the Soviet past. It explores works such as Daniel Stein, Interpreter by Ludmilla Ulitskaya, The Time of Women by Elena Chizhova, Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich, and In Memory of Memory by Maria Stepanova, and uncovers connecting thematic structures and features. Focusing on the concepts of displacement and postmemory, the book shows how these works have given voice to those on the margins of society and of 'great history' whose resistance was often silent. In doing so, these women writers portray the everyday experiences and trauma of displaced women and girls during the second half of the twentieth century. This study offers new insights into the importance of these women writers' work in creating and preserving cultural memory in post-Soviet Russia

    Drawing on the figure and discourses of the Victorian fin-de-siècle New Woman, this book examines women writers who struggled with conservative, patriarchal ideologies of motherhood in novels, periodicals and life writings of the long modernist period. It shows how these writers challenged, resisted, adapted and negotiated traditional ideas with their own versions of new motherhood, with needs for identities and experiences beyond maternity. Tracing the period from the end of the nineteenth century through the twentieth, this study explores how some of the numerous elements and forces we identify with modernism are manifested in equally diverse and often competing representations of mothers, mothering and motherhood. It investigates how historical personages and fictional protagonists used and were constructed within textual spaces where they engaged critically with the maternal as institution, identity and practice, from perspectives informed by gender, sexuality, nationhood, race and class. The matrifocal literatures examined in this book exemplify how feminist motherhoods feature as a prominent thematic of the long modernist era and how rebellious New Woman mothers provocatively wrote maternity into text and history

Der Text zeichnet ihren Werdegang als Verfasserin von Kriegsliteratur für Frauen während der Kaiserzeit sowie als langjähriger Drehbuchautorin nach. Die untersuchten literarischen Texte und Archivalien sind die Grundlage für die Erforschung ihrer geistig-sozial-künstlerischen Entwicklung sowie ihrer 'Weltanschauung'. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann Fritz Lang schuf sie in den 1920er und frühen 1930er Jahren Meilensteine der Filmgeschichte wie Die Nibelungen, Metropolis und M.     Robert Walsers Figuren- und Sprachgestaltung ist durch Momente der Uneindeutigkeit charakterisiert: einer Pendelbewegung zwischen Ernst und Unernst, dem geraden und mäandernden Weg, Echtheit und Als-ob sowie dem Aufbau und Bruch von Illusion. Diese Momente lassen sich unter dem Begriff des Spiels subsumieren und finden sich auch in der Romantik und bei Gegenwartsautoren. Mithilfe einer literarischen Spiel- und einer Modelltheorie arbeitet diese Studie Robert Walsers Funktion als Bindeglied zwischen Romantik und Gegenwart heraus. Sie weist die Ursprünge seiner „uneindeutigen“ Textgestaltung bei den untersuchten romantischen Autoren nach und zeigt, wie diese Art der Gestaltung bis in die Gegenwart fortwirkt. Neben Texten aus allen Schaffensphasen Robert Walsers stehen Werke von Joseph von Eichendorff, Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Tieck sowie Wilhelm Genazino und Matthias Zschokke im Zentrum.

    Dieses Buch bemüht sich um eine Gesamtdarstellung zur 1492 anhebenden und bis 1942 so gut wie unbehandelbaren „Lustseuche“ Syphilis anhand ausgewählter literarischer Texte, ausgehend von der Renaissance in der Lesart Honoré de Balzacs, dessen Werk – zusammen mit jenem Émile Zolas – als Teil einer Sozialpädagogik ‚avant la lettre‘ gelesen wird. Weitere Schwerpunkte setzen, gleichfalls als Nicht-Syphilitiker betrachtet, Interpretationen zu Alfred de Musset, Edmond de Goncourt sowie zu Arthur Schnitzler und zu Thomas Mann, aber auch zu Werken von Syphilitikern wie Gustave Flaubert, Alphonse Daudet und Guy de Maupassant, schließlich zu Friedrich Nietzsche und seiner durch seine Schwester – gegen seine Krankheit – forcierten Indienststellung als NS-Philosoph. Die These, auf die alles zuläuft: Hitler, der Sypholophobie ausgeliefert wie kaum ein Zweiter, hätte Nietzsche eigentlich, dessen Ungnade der späten Geburt vorausgesetzt, ebenso vergasen oder vergiften lassen müssen, wie er das nach 1939 mit allen Syphilitikern, von ihm gelesen als erbkranke Hinterlassenschaft jüdischer Dekadenz, tat.

    Tragisches und Komisches sind, seit von ihnen die Rede ist, im Gegensatz zu einander gesehen worden. Wird Tragisches mit Komischem verbunden, wäre zu erwarten, dass sie einander schwächen. Tragikomische Situationen überraschen damit, dass die gegensätzlichen Qualitäten einander steigern. Unter welchen Bedingungen kann dies eintreten? Andreas Dorschel richtet die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Verhältnis zur Zeit: Komisches ist im Moment zuhause, Tragisches beschreibt einen großen Bogen. In seiner Studie schlägt er vor, Tragikomisches aus der Perspektive einer Poetik zu erfassen, mithilfe der Kategorien ›Ironie‹, ›Intervention‹ und ›Travestie‹. Inwiefern diese Aufschluss geben, erkundet der Autor an Beispielen aus der Antike, der Frühen Neuzeit und der Moderne: Euripides’ »Bakchai« (erstmals aufgeführt 405 v. Chr.), Shakespeares »Tragedy of King Lear« (gedruckt 1623) und Kafkas »Der Process« (verfasst 1914/15). Das Augenmerk, welches diese erste philosophische Monographie zur Frage der Tragikomik auf die Literatur lenkt, schließt nicht aus, dass es auch im Leben manchmal tragikomisch zugeht. Doch dessen Konstellationen zeigen sich tragikomisch wohl erst dann, wenn auf sie in bestimmten Weisen geblickt wird, die ›poetisch‹ zu nennen sind.
