Considering socio-political and philosophical ideas about British multiculturalism, superdiversity and conviviality, Ulla Rahbek studies a broad range of texts by writers from across the majority-minority divide. The text focuses on figurative registers and metaphorical richness in multicultural poetry and investigates the interlocked issue of recognition, representation and identity in memoirs. Rahbek analyses how twenty-first-century British multicultural novels both envision and reimagine an inclusive nation and thematise the detrimental effects of individual exclusion on characters’ pursuits of the good life. She observes the ways that short stories pivot on ambivalent encounters and intercultural dialogue, and she reflects on the public good of multicultural literature

Together, these texts form a corpus exploring human selfhood as wounded and undone by desire. Emerging in the twelfth century in Western Europe, this discourse of the wounded self has survived with ever-increasing importance, informing contemporary methods of theoretical inquiry into mourning, melancholy, trauma and testimony. Taking its cue from the moment Narcissus bruises himself upon learning he cannot receive the love he wants from his reflection, this book argues that the construct of the wounded self emphasizes fantasy over reality, and that only through the world of the imagination—of literature itself—can our narcissistic injuries seemingly be healed and desire fulfilled

Jahrhundert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Texte, die sich in der Neuzeit mit dem ‚Göttlichen‘ oder dem ‚ewigen Leben‘ befassen, trotz ihrer mitunter antichristlichen Programmatiken immer wieder von ‚klassischen‘ christlichen Denk- und Darstellungsfiguren eingeholt werden. An einer ‚erfüllungspoetischen‘ Traditionslinie von Klopstock, Hölderlin, Rückert, George und den Surrealisten legt der Autor dar, wie in Lyrik und Poetik der Anspruch erhoben wird, die erfüllte Zeit des ‚ewigen Lebens‘ – nach der je eigenen Vorstellung der Autoren freilich – in der ‚ästhetischen Eigenzeit‘ der Gedichte realsymbolisch gegenwärtig zu machen. Afterword: Twenty-First-Century Perspectives This book explores the formative role of mobilities in the production of our close relationships, proposing that the tracks—both literal and figurative— we lay down in the process play a crucial role in generating and sustaining intimacy. Working with diaries, journals, and literary texts from the mid- to late-twentieth century, the book pursues this thesis through three phases of the lifecourse: courtship (broadly defined), the middle years of long-term relationships, and bereavement. Building upon the author’s recent research on automobility, the text’s case studies reveal the crucial role played by many different types of transport—including walking—in defining our most enduring relationships. Conceptually, the book draws upon the writings of the philosopher, Henri Bergson, the anthropologist, Tim Ingold, and the geographer, David Seamon, engaging with topical debates in cultural and emotional geography (especially work on landscape, memory, and mourning), mobilities studies, and critical love studies

    Günter Grass hat sein Leben lang versucht, Grenzen zu überspringen und profiliert sich seit dem Anfang seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn als provokanter Grenzgänger zwischen zahlreichen ‚Welten‘, ohne diesen eindeutig zuzugehören. Saartje Gobyn zeigt auf, dass Grass auch innerhalb seiner Romane Grenzen überspringt, was in der Grassforschung bisher kaum bemerkt wurde. Weder Grass‘ Figuren noch seine Erzähler sind an ihre ‚Welten‘, in denen sie entworfen werden, gebunden.     Dimensionen der Idylle -- Theorien der Idylle -- Paradigmen der Idylle Die Idylle steht im Spannungsfeld von Kitsch und Katastrophe, das Nils Jablonski durch medienkomparatistische close readings literarischer, filmischer und televisiver Texte untersucht. In der Perspektive einer materialen Topik wird das vielfältige Verkommen der Idylle anhand ihrer Poetizität, Medialität und Serialität analysiert – beginnend bei den Anfängen in der Antike, über die Popularisierung der Idylle im 18. Jahrhundert bis zu gegenwärtigen Filmen und TV-Serien. Die herausgearbeitete Spezifik idyllischer poiesis kennzeichnet zudem die richtungsweisenden Reflexionen zur Idylle um 1800. Mit kritischem Bezug auf die idyllischen Verfahren der Überlagerung, Idealisierung und Beschränkung bei Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Schiller und Jean Paul wird die enge gattungstheoretische Bestimmung der Idylle revidiert, um den kulturkonstitutiven Aspekt des materialen Topos strukturell zu erfassen. Epilogue: Reading Reading in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows This book examines the way young adult readers are constructed in a variety of contemporary young adult fictions, arguing that contemporary young adult novels depict readers as agents. Reading, these novels suggest, is neither an unalloyed good nor a dangerous ploy, but rather an essential, occasionally fraught, by turns escapist and instrumental, deeply pleasurable, and highly contentious activity that has value far beyond the classroom skills or the specific content it conveys. After an introductory chapter that examines the state of reading and young adult fiction today, the book examines novels that depict reading in school, gendered and racialized reading, reading magical and religious books, and reading as a means to developing civic agency. These examinations reveal that books for teens depict teen readers as doers, and suggest that their ability to read deeply, critically, and communally is crucial to the development of adolescent agency

Kate Haffey argues that queer theory’s recent work on time owes a debt to modernist authors who developed new ways of representing temporality in their texts. By reading a series of early twentieth-century literary texts from modernists like Woolf, Eliot, Faulkner, and Stein alongside contemporary authors, this book examines the way in which modernist writers challenged narrative conventions of time in ways that both illuminate and foreshadow current scholarship on queer temporality. In her analyses of contemporary novelists and critics Michael Cunningham, Jeanette Winterson, Angela Carter, and Eve Sedgwick, Haffey also shows that these modernist temporalities have been reconfigured by contemporary authors to develop new approaches to futurity

This theory is then applied to genre fiction, particularly detective fiction and science fiction, demonstrating that postmodernism is found in the structure, rather than questions posed about literary expression. Why do we do it? Since time immemorial the answer to these questions, from both the left and the right, has been that work is both a natural necessity and, barring exploitation, a social good. One might criticise its management, its compensation and who benefits from it the most, but never work itself, never work as such. In this book, Alastair Hemmens seeks to challenge these received ideas. Drawing on the new ‘critique-of-value’ school of Marxian critical theory, Hemmens demonstrates that capitalism and its final crisis cannot be properly understood except in terms of the historically specific and socially destructive character of labour. It is from this radical perspective that Hemmens turns to an innovative critical analysis of the rich history of radical French thinkers who, over the past two centuries, have challenged the labour form head on: from the utopian-socialist Charles Fourier, who called for the abolition of the separation between work and play, and Marx’s wayward son-in-law, Paul Lafargue, who demanded The Right to Laziness (1880), to the father of Surrealism, André Breton, who inaugurated a ‘war on work’, and, of course, the French Situationist, Guy Debord, author of the famous graffito, ‘never work’. Ultimately, Hemmens considers normative changes in attitudes to work since the 1960s and the future of anti-capitalist social movements today. This book will be a crucial point of reference for contemporary debates about labour and the anti-work tradition in France

Jahrhunderts (1955–1978) -- Ausblick: Kitsch und Camp Laurenz Schulz liefert neue Erkenntnisse hinsichtlich der Etymologie und des regionalen Ursprungs des Kitschbegriffs und zeigt auf, dass die Werte Wahrheit, Originalität und Distanz dessen Bedeutung in invertierter Form dominieren. Die bisher in der Forschung gängige Annahme, dass Rührung bzw. Distanz die wichtigsten Werte für den Kitschbegriff sind, werden vom Autor widerlegt. Ausgehend hiervon vergleicht er den Kitsch-Diskurs mit den historischen Vorläuferphänomenen sowie postmodernen Phänomenen wie Camp und Trash und stellt argumentative Parallelen und Wertkongruenzen sowie Unterschiede heraus. Animal Grace Animal Visions considers how literature responds to the harms of anthropocentricism, working with Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847) and various adaptations of this canonistic novel to show how posthumanist dream writing unsettles the privileging of the human species over other species. Two feminist and post-Freudian responses, Kathy Acker’s poem “Obsession” (1992) and Anne Carson’s “The Glass Essay” (1997) most strongly extend Brontë’s dream writing in this direction. Building on the trope of a ludic Cathy ghost who refuses the containment of logic and reason, these and other adaptations offer the gift of a radical peri-hysteria. This emotional excess is most clearly seen in Kate Bush’s music video “Wuthering Heights” (1978) and Peter Kosminsky’s film Wuthering Heights (1992). Such disturbances make space for a moor love that is particularly evident in Jane Urquhart’s novel Changing Heaven (1989) and, to a lesser extent Sylvia Plath’s poem, “Wuthering Heights” (1961). Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and its most productive afterings make space for co-affective relations between humans and other animal beings. Andrea Arnold’s film Wuthering Heights (2011) and Luis Buñuel’s Abismos de Pasión (1954) also highlight the rupturing split gaze of non-acting animals in their films. In all of these works depictions of intra-active and entangled responses between animals show the potential for dynamic and generative multispecies relations, where the human is one animal amongst the kin of the world

The book describes the historical development and major tenets of Elite Theory, and shows how each of four post-war Washington novels—Gore Vidal’s Washington, D.C.; Allen Drury’s Advise and Consent; Joan Didion’s Democracy; and Ward Just’s Echo House—illustrates the way class-based political elites exhibit forms of “ruling-class consciousness” and maintain their legitimacy in an ostensibly democratic form of government by promoting themselves as models of behavior, promulgating an ideology that justifies their rule through their control of the media, and accepting new members from the lower classes. Reading these novels through a socio-political lens, David Smit offers suggestions for ways to work for a more just and equitable society in light of what this analysis reveals about the “culture” that produces our political elites

    Methodische Schärfung des ‚Nachlebens‘ als Analysewerkzeug -- Philosophiegeschichtliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Erfüllung und dem ontologisch Absoluten von der Antike bis in die Neuzeit -- Erfüllungspoetische Konstellationen sakramentaler und poetischer Zeit- und Symboltheorien -- Erfüllungspoetische Traditionslinie von Klopstock über Hölderlin, Rückert und George bis zu den Surrealisten Sebastian Lübcke untersucht philosophische und literarische Auseinandersetzungen mit der Erfüllung und dem ontologisch Absoluten vom 18. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Texte, die sich in der Neuzeit mit dem ‚Göttlichen‘ oder dem ‚ewigen Leben‘ befassen, trotz ihrer mitunter antichristlichen Programmatiken immer wieder von ‚klassischen‘ christlichen Denk- und Darstellungsfiguren eingeholt werden. An einer ‚erfüllungspoetischen‘ Traditionslinie von Klopstock, Hölderlin, Rückert, George und den Surrealisten legt der Autor dar, wie in Lyrik und Poetik der Anspruch erhoben wird, die erfüllte Zeit des ‚ewigen Lebens‘ – nach der je eigenen Vorstellung der Autoren freilich – in der ‚ästhetischen Eigenzeit‘ der Gedichte realsymbolisch gegenwärtig zu machen. Afterword: Twenty-First-Century Perspectives This book explores the formative role of mobilities in the production of our close relationships, proposing that the tracks—both literal and figurative— we lay down in the process play a crucial role in generating and sustaining intimacy. Working with diaries, journals, and literary texts from the mid- to late-twentieth century, the book pursues this thesis through three phases of the lifecourse: courtship (broadly defined), the middle years of long-term relationships, and bereavement. Building upon the author’s recent research on automobility, the text’s case studies reveal the crucial role played by many different types of transport—including walking—in defining our most enduring relationships. Conceptually, the book draws upon the writings of the philosopher, Henri Bergson, the anthropologist, Tim Ingold, and the geographer, David Seamon, engaging with topical debates in cultural and emotional geography (especially work on landscape, memory, and mourning), mobilities studies, and critical love studies
