    Second Temple, rabbinic, and Samaritan sources preserve a variety of interpretations and (re)formulations of Leviticus 21:9. The pivotal issue informing the various approaches to this verse is the identity of the person "profaned" by the conduct of the priest's daughter; specifically, is it the daughter, herself, or her father who is (directly) affected? The present essay examines various rabbinic and Samaritan interpretations of this verse, noting the exegetical (i.e., morphological and syntactic) similarities and differences obtaining among these positions. Especial attention is devoted to the formulation of Targum Onqelos, for which two explanations are proposed, and the similar exegetical features reflected in Samaritan renderings of this passage. It is demonstrated that, like Targum Onqelos and additional rabbinic/Jewish targumic sources, Samaritan sources indicate that some Samaritan students of Leviticus understood Lev 21:9 to mean that it is the daughter, herself, who is profaned by her conduct.

    The paper proposes some introductive observations for a comparative study of Jewish and Egyptian temple literature. An affinity between these traditions was already noted by Jewish-Hellenistic authors like Artapanus and Philo of Alexandria who spoke of a Moses instructed in Egyptian philosophy (that was, priestly lore and ideology). The book of Leviticus, in particular, offers many thematic and structural parallels to the Egyptian ritual literature. As a general, authoritative "manual of the Jerusalem Temple", the book of Leviticus can be compared with the Temple Manual, the collection of general rules and instructions on Egyptian temple liturgy to be published by Joaquim Quack.     In the first section Philo's commentary on the laws about sacrifice in Lev. 1-7 is analysed, especially from De specialibus legibus. His exegesis aims at an ethical and spiritual interpretation of sacrifice, but does not deny the importance of the sacrificial act and its literal meaning. A comparison between Philo and the Rabbinic tradition shows some analogies in the exegetical methods both use, and in some fundamental issues, as the importance both attach to the right intention of the offerer. This was in harmony with the criticism against traditional sacrifice found in Greek philosophy and served to bring out the diversity of Hebrew cult compared to the pagan ceremonies. Philo acknowledges the Jerusalem Temple with its priesthood as the only place where that cult is possible, but he also assigns a universal function to it. The sacrifice priests carry out there, plays not only a religious role, but it is a social way of aggregation as well and teaches people through a non-verbal language which is similar to that of mime and dance. The sacrifice thus becomes a δε'γμα representing also acts other than the one performed during the rite. In this respect the word is used in a way similar to Plato. This happens especially with the gesture of laying the hands on the victim. The interpretation Philo gives of this will be followed by some Church fathers. (English)

    The Holiness Code in Leviticus contains a well-known list of illicit sexual practices. Two infamous Levitical verses (18.22 and 20.13) have been widely interpreted as forbidding and calling for punishment for carnal relations between two adult males and have even influenced modern legislation regarding homosexuality and marriage equality in many countries. It is the suggestion of the author that the verses do not in fact refer to homosexual acts at all, but instead should be interpreted as forbidding and calling for punishment of the act of two males sharing simultaneously the bed of a single woman, which in the context of the Holiness Code and its other statutes aims at prohibiting the creation of offspring whose patronage is unclear and form is abominable, which in turn would lead to the ritual pollution of the Promised Land.

    Seit der bisher maßgeblichen Edition der Schriften des griechischen Kirchenschriftstellers Methodius von Olympus (gest. 311 n. Chr.) von G. N. Bonwetsch aus dem Jahr 1917 sind zahlreiche neue Handschriften entdeckt worden, die die Bedeutung der altslavischen Übersetzung des Corpus Methodianum hervorheben und eine eigenständige Berücksichtigung neben dem griechischen Original erforderlich machen. Der Band widmet sich der Schrift De lepra, einem innerhalb des Corpus überlieferten Dialogs. In ihrer Originalsprache Griechisch ist die christlich-allegorische Auslegung des alttestamentlichen Buches Levitikus (Lev 13) als Epitome innerhalb des Florilegium Coislinianum überliefert.; in der deutlich umfangreicheren altslavischen Übersetzung des 10. Jh. n. Chr. ist sie in unterschiedlichem Kontext in 17 Abschriften des 16.–19. Jahrhunderts erhalten. Auf dieser Basis macht der Band den Text der Schrift De lepra erstmals vollumfänglich in einer kritischen Edition sowohl des griechischen als auch des slavischen Textes zugänglich. Beide werden jeweils um eine deutsche Übersetzung sowie um Einleitung und Kommentar ergänzt. Mehrere Apparate, die editorische, philologische und patristische Informationen ergänzen, runden die Editionen ab This volume is the first to make the full text of De lepra by church father Methodius of Olympus (d. 311 CE) available in a critical edition, both in its original language, Greek, and in the much more extensive Old Slavic translation from the tenth century CE.
