    Die Debatte um die Gestalt einer Wissensgeschichte des neuzeitlichen Europa bedarf der Korrektur. Es ist an der Zeit, endlich auch die prekäre Seite zu beleuchten: die Unsicherheit und Gefährdung bestimmter Theorie- und Wissensbestände, den heiklen Status ihres Trägermaterials, die Reaktion auf Bedrohung und Verlust, das Risiko häretischen Transfers. Martin Mulsow begibt sich auf die Spur dieses prekären Wissens mit dem Ziel, es in seiner Bedeutung für den Prozess der europäischen Wissensgeschichte zu rehabilitieren. In materialreichen Fallstudien, die den Zeitraum von der Renaissance bis zur Aufklärung umspannen, präsentiert er die Taktiken, die Intellektuelle ersonnen haben, um mit diesen Fährnissen leben zu können, ihre Rückzugsgesten, ihre Ängste, aber auch ihre Ermutigungen und Versuche, verlorenes Wissen wieder zurückzugewinnen. Prekäres Wissen handelt nicht von den großen Themen der Metaphysik und Epistemologie, sondern von Randzonen wie der Magie und der Numismatik, der Bibelinterpretation und der Orientalistik. Es geht nicht nur um Theorien, sondern auch um Furcht und Faszination, nicht um die großen Forschergestalten, sondern um vergessene und halbvergessene Gelehrte. Es ist ein Buch voller spannender Geschichten, eine andere Ideengeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit und zugleich der ambitionierte Versuch, den Begriff des Wissens selbst im Zeichen des "material turn", des "iconic turn" und der Kommunikations- und Informationsgeschichte neu zu denken

    In eighteenth-century China, a remarkable intellectual transformation took place, centered on the ascendance of philology. Its practitioners were preoccupied with the reliability of sources as evidence for restoring ancient texts and meanings and with the centrality of facts and truth to their scholarship and identity. With the power to construct the textual past, philology has the potential to shape both individual and collective identities, and its rise to prominence consequently deeply affected contemporaneous political, social, and cultural agendas.Ori Sela foregrounds the polymath Qian Daxin (1728–1804), one of the most distinguished scholars of the Qing dynasty, to tell this story. China’s Philological Turn traces scholars’ social networks and the production of knowledge, considering the texts they studied along with their reading practices and the assumptions about knowledge, facts, and truth that came with them. The book considers fundamental issues of eighteenth-century intellectual life: the tension between antiquity’s elevated status and the question of what antiquity actually was; the status of scientific knowledge, especially astronomy, mathematics, and calendrical studies; and the relationship between learned debates and cultural anxieties, especially scholars’ self-characterization and collective identity. Sela brings to light manuscripts, biographies, letters, handwritten notes, epitaphs, and more to highlight the creativity and openness of his subjects. A pioneering book in the cultural history of intellectuals across disciplinary boundaries, China’s Philological Turn reconstructs the history of eighteenth-century Chinese learning and its long-lasting consequences

    In 'Cicero in Heaven: The Roman Rhetor and Luther's Reformation', Carl Springer traces the historical outlines of Cicero's rhetorical legacy, paying special emphasis to the momentous impact that he had on Luther, his colleagues at the University of Wittenberg, and later Lutherans. While the revival of interest in Cicero's rhetoric is more often associated with the Renaissance than with the Reformation, it would be a mistake to overlook the important role that Luther and other reformers played in securing Cicero's place in the curricula of schools in modern Europe (and America).     In eighteenth-century China, a remarkable intellectual transformation took place, centered on the ascendance of philology. Its practitioners were preoccupied with the reliability of sources as evidence for restoring ancient texts and meanings and with the centrality of facts and truth to their scholarship and identity. With the power to construct the textual past, philology has the potential to shape both individual and collective identities, and its rise to prominence consequently deeply affected contemporaneous political, social, and cultural agendas.Ori Sela foregrounds the polymath Qian Daxin (1728–1804), one of the most distinguished scholars of the Qing dynasty, to tell this story. China’s Philological Turn traces scholars’ social networks and the production of knowledge, considering the texts they studied along with their reading practices and the assumptions about knowledge, facts, and truth that came with them. The book considers fundamental issues of eighteenth-century intellectual life: the tension between antiquity’s elevated status and the question of what antiquity actually was; the status of scientific knowledge, especially astronomy, mathematics, and calendrical studies; and the relationship between learned debates and cultural anxieties, especially scholars’ self-characterization and collective identity. Sela brings to light manuscripts, biographies, letters, handwritten notes, epitaphs, and more to highlight the creativity and openness of his subjects. A pioneering book in the cultural history of intellectuals across disciplinary boundaries, China’s Philological Turn reconstructs the history of eighteenth-century Chinese learning and its long-lasting consequences

While the revival of interest in Cicero's rhetoric is more often associated with the Renaissance than with the Reformation, it would be a mistake to overlook the important role that Luther and other reformers played in securing Cicero's place in the curricula of schools in modern Europe (and America). By reconstructing the main phases of textual transmission, from the first authorial dissemination of the speeches to the medieval manuscripts, and by re-examining the abundant evidence on Ciceronian scholarship from the first to the sixth century CE, Cicero and Roman Education traces the history of the exegetical tradition on Cicero's oratory and re-assesses the 'didactic' function of the speeches, whose preservation was largely determined by pedagogical factors"... Martin Mulsow begibt sich auf die Spur dieses prekären Wissens mit dem Ziel, es in seiner Bedeutung für den Prozess der europäischen Wissensgeschichte zu rehabilitieren. In materialreichen Fallstudien, die den Zeitraum von der Renaissance bis zur Aufklärung umspannen, präsentiert er die Taktiken, die Intellektuelle ersonnen haben, um mit diesen Fährnissen leben zu können, ihre Rückzugsgesten, ihre Ängste, aber auch ihre Ermutigungen und Versuche, verlorenes Wissen wieder zurückzugewinnen. Prekäres Wissen handelt nicht von den großen Themen der Metaphysik und Epistemologie, sondern von Randzonen wie der Magie und der Numismatik, der Bibelinterpretation und der Orientalistik. Es geht nicht nur um Theorien, sondern auch um Furcht und Faszination, nicht um die großen Forschergestalten, sondern um vergessene und halbvergessene Gelehrte. Es ist ein Buch voller spannender Geschichten, eine andere Ideengeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit und zugleich der ambitionierte Versuch, den Begriff des Wissens selbst im Zeichen des "material turn", des "iconic turn" und der Kommunikations- und Informationsgeschichte neu zu denken
