It identifies general tendencies in aesthetic modes of environmental thinking and representation, and it includes studies of established figures such as Manoel de Barros and Frans Krajcberg and representatives of a newer generation, including Josely Vianna Baptista and Nuno Ramos. This study reveals a diverse range of artistic responses to heightened awareness of environmental change and vulnerability in Brazil, including efforts to directly connect art with issues and activism and more abstractly oriented explorations of concepts animating or unsettling conventional understandings of the environment. While attuned to particularities of their Brazilian context, Land That Seemed to Us Quite Vast makes a case for considering these poets and artists as participants in eco-cosmopolitan movements to rethink through artistic practice relationships between the human self and more-than-human environments" --

    Painting landscapes was very much a private activity for Peter Paul Rubens. Whilst the majority of his other works were commissioned, the landscapes seem to have been painted for his own pleasure and delight and stayed in the artist's possession until his death. Most of them were painted in the last decade of his life, a happy period, in which Rubens retired from public duties and spent most of his free time studying the antique and enjoying sojourns on his country estate, castle Het Steen. To grasp this profoundly personal character of Rubens's landscapes, this book considers the artist's highly complex method of pictorial invention to illuminate the perception, implementation, dissemination, and posthumous reception of views on nature and landscape as depicted in Rubens's landscape art

    Die Kunstprojekte der Land Art finden sich meist in menschenleeren Gegenden, wie den Wüsten- und Prärielandschaften des amerikanischen Südwestens. Als in der Natur situierte Werke prägt sie eine spezifische Ortsgebundenheit, die eigentlich nur durch die Anwesenheit des Betrachters vor Ort erfahrbar wird. Die Abgelegenheit der Projekte und ihr durch Witterung und Erosion fortschreitender Verfall machen jedoch auch ihre Präsentation durch Fotografien, Zeichnungen und Filme notwendig. Die Studie widmet sich der medialen Vermittlung von Land Art und deren Wechselverhältnis zum Ort. Denn viele Projekte der Land Art sind für die meisten Betrachter nur noch in Bildbänden oder Galerien, in Filmen, Fotos und Zeichnungen sichtbar. Ihre Ortsspezifität wird damit nicht allein durch die Wahrnehmung des Besuchers an ihrem Ausführungsort hergestellt, sondern auch in den unterschiedlichen Medien verhandelt. Ausgehend von den kunsttheoretischen Überlegungen Robert Smithsons zur Dialektik von Site und Non-Site zeigt Samantha Schramm das Wechselspiel zwischen Bildern, Texten, Installationen im Ausstellungsraum und den entlegenen, veränderlichen, vielfach bereits verschwundenen Markierungen in der Natur. Dabei stehen die Transformationen der ortsspezifischen Projekte in mediale Konzepte und deren Wechselverhältnis zum Ort im Mittelpunkt
