    This paper analyses the textual variant of the name of Noemin’s husband in the book of Ruth: Elimelech according to the Masoretic Text and Abimelech according to the Septuagint. It investigates if this textual variant is linked to a different Hebrew Vorlage, whether it is carried out during the process of translation of the text in its Greek form, or whether it is due to its transmission in its Greek form. Finally, this study analyses the literary criticism of this variant by showing how a coherent character is created by name and through actions and how, in this way, God’s presence is accentuated in the narrative.

    This contribution approaches the text of 2 Kgs 23:4-6 from the operational point of view of critical editions of the Hebrew (HBCE) and the Greek (Septuaginta Unternehmen) in order to pose a series of methodological questions on how to proceed with books, such as Kings, which circulated since the Second Temple period in multiple “editions” or “redactions.” This leads to the need to determine how far an editor can go when tracing back the origins of this plural tradition, and how differences between editions can be rendered via the standard system and conventions of an eclectic text, with its strengths and limitations.

    Being one of the earliest Christian churches, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) collection of Scriptures is the largest, though without a clear-cut canon. Following its unique calendar, the EOTC published its first Amharic Bible ever for the Ethiopian millennium celebration in 2007. It was based on the Geʿez and the LXX versions, which resulted in a strong negative reaction from some believers in the Evangelical churches in Ethiopia. After a brief survey of the translation and transmission history of Scriptures in Ethiopia, the article discusses the process of the millennium translation, the reactions against it, and the outcomes of both the translation and its reactions.

    Die Übersetzung der Bibel von Hieronymus, bekannt als die Vulgata, ist eine wörtliche Kopie eines hebräischen Originals, das jetzt verloren ist. Es gibt deutliche Unterschiede zwischen dem Textus receptus, der derzeit als zuverlässigste Quelle (BHS) gilt, und dem Text, den Hieronymus als Ausgangspunkt gewählt hat. In diesem Artikel möchte ich zeigen, wie man einen detaillierten Blick auf den hebräischen Text, der Hieronymus vorgelegen haben muss, werfen kann.
