    Die Grenzen Europas sind seit einigen Jahren gen Osten verschoben - Zeit für eine erste Bilanz des Alltags im »neuen Europa«. Wie wurde der homo sovieticus zum erfolgreichen Europäer? Was bedeuten heute Gleichheit und Differenz, Gemeinschaft und Individualität in den osteuropäischen Gesellschaften? Diese Studie untersucht die Logiken sozialer Differenzierung, die im Kontext der postsozialistischen Transformation und europäischen Integration auftreten. Konsumstrategien, Lebensstile und Körpertechniken werden als Ausdrucksformen veränderter Vorstellungen von Erfolg und gutem Leben analysiert. Es entsteht eine eindrucksvolle Ethnographie des neuen osteuropäischen Alltags.

    The response of an economy to a windfall of foreign exchange (be it aid or natural resource revenues) is often constrained by absorptive capacity. We provide a micro-founded analysis of absorption constraints, based on the idea that expanding the economy’s capital stock (in aggregate or sectorally) requires nontraded inputs, the supply of which is constrained by the initial capital stock. Given this constraint, the economy will manifest ‘Dutch disease’ symptoms, although many of them are temporary. On impact there is sharp appreciation of the real exchange rate, which will then depreciate back to its equilibrium level. In contrast to the permanent income hypothesis, real consumption jumps part of the way to its new long-run level, and then continues to rise. Depending on the capital-intensity of the investments needed for the adjustment, the economy may run a current account deficit or surplus in early years.

    We discuss recent developments in the literature that studies how the dynamics of earnings and wages affect consumption choices over the life cycle. We start by analyzing the theoretical impact of income changes on consumption - highlighting the role of persistence, information, size and insurability of changes in economic resources. We next examine the empirical contributions, distinguishing between papers that use only income data and those that use both income and consumption data. The latter do this for two purposes. First, one can make explicit assumptions about the structure of credit and insurance markets and identify the income process or the information set of the individuals. Second, one can assume that the income process or the amount of information that consumers have are known and tests the implications of the theory. In general there is an identification issue that is only recently being addressed, with better data or better "experiments". We conclude with a discussion of the literature that endogenize people's earnings and therefore change the nature of risk faced by households.

    The size of the average American household has fallen dramatically -from six in 1850 to three in 2000. To explain this decline we model households as collections of roommates who share the costs of household public goods. If private goods are more income elastic than public goods, as we document in the paper, an increase in income endogenously leads to smaller households. We calibrate the model to match data from 2000. Changing incomes to their 1850 levels, we find that our mechanism can explain 37 percent of the observed reduction in the number of adults per household and 16 percent of the reduction in the number of children. -- Household size ; living arrangements ; roommates ; economies of scale ; household public goods ; fertility decline.
