"Commedia dell'Arte Scenarios gathers together a collection of scenarios from some of the most important Commedia dell'Arte manuscripts, many of which have never been published in English before. Each script is accompanied by an editorial commentary that sets out its historical context and the backstory of its composition and dramaturgical strategies, as well as scene summaries, and character and properties lists. These supplementary materials not only create a comprehensive picture of each script's performance methods but also offer a blueprint for readers looking to perform the scenarios as part of their own study or professional practice. This collection offers scholars, performers and students a wealth of original performance texts that brig to life one of the most foundational performance genres in world theatre"--

"The studio reinterprets the theater in the vernacular of the fifteenth century focusing on the Padan courts of Mantua, Ferrara and Milan. The overall examination of the three centers makes it possible to 'create a system', to outline a unitary history of fifteenth-century representations, which feed the elative, ideological, commendable and political requests of the noble clientele. Starting from a broad perspective - which holds together literature, entertainment and philology - it gives an account of a fascinating, but little known, cross-section of Renaissance Italy. The essay also makes precise distinctions between works of refined elaboration - which have played an essential role of paradigm and are to be fully accepted among the masterpieces of the fifteenth-century literary civilization (in particular the Orpheus, the Cephalus, the Timone, the Pasitea) - and other less significant from an aesthetic point of view, but organic to the courtier project. The privileged space granted to Poliziano's Mantuan fabula, which exercises an absolute attraction on the Po theater, is a sign of a precise historiographical choice: the book, contrary to those who still identify in the Medici-Laurentian season the only possible fulcrum of the literature of the fifteenth century, describes a cultural landscape that is truly moved in its design thrusts, in its laborious attempts, between hybridism and flexibility, to distinguish itself from the Tuscan tradition"--

This intervention in Shakespeare and Jonson scholarship provides critical new insights into the plots, pacing and characterisation of drama and attends to the ethical and pedagogical work displayed and accomplished by fencing and dramatic devices. It yields a robust theory of active waiting and brings the imbrications of appropriate timing and ethical decision-making to the fore
