    The Indian government has presented itself as a champion of gender mainstreaming in UN peacekeeping. At the same time, the domestic security sector in India continues to create a gender-segregated environment and experiences of uniformed women in the field show remaining barriers for gender equity. Given this contradiction, the article examines the ambivalence inherent to Indian gender mainstreaming of peacekeeping units. We argue that transnational norms, such as gender mainstreaming, are embedded in larger norm bundles, and we combine the literature of norm localization and norm contestation in our conceptual framework to illustrate how India localizes parts of the gender mainstreaming norm bundle whilst contesting others. We find that India’s localization of the gender mainstreaming norm has meant to pursue an asymmetric gender-parity approach between different branches of the Indian security forces and that it has fomented a division of labour within the police corps. Moreover, we illustrate how India contests the idea of placing women in security-sensitive areas, in combat roles, and gender-integrated police units.

    Since 1995, presidents from both parties have increased US government initiatives in pursuit of global gender equality, but there has been little scholarly work that explores public support for these initiatives. We analyze the level of citizen support for several types of global gender equality programs. In addition, we explore support for one specific rationale for the policy –the argument that the participation of women in decision-making will make the world a more peaceful place. Our central hypothesis is that personal security dispositions are an important correlate of support for global gender initiatives, and our analysis yields support for the hypothesis. Citizens who place a high value on personal security display stronger support for gender equality in foreign policy. We close with suggestions for further research and discuss the policy implications of our findings, in particular with respect to public opinion on the use of military force.

Die Beiträger:innen aus dem Bereich der Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaft blicken aus ihrer jeweiligen fachdisziplinären Perspektive auf dieses Problemfeld, wobei dem Aspekt der Lüge ein besonderer Stellenwert zukommt. Der Begriff und die Erscheinung werden systematisiert und historisch kontextualisiert. Untersucht werden die Lüge in der Politik, Sprach-Bild-Konstellationen und jüngere medientechnische Entwicklungen sowie Thematisierungen im Medium der Literatur. Mit Beiträgen von Michael Bahn, Lothar Bluhm, Marc Fritzsche, Lars Thorben Henk, Achim Hescher, Andreas Osterroth, Georg Wenzelburger und Timo S. Werner. The tension between what is fact and what is fake is shaping a large number of current debates. Guarantees and obligations have lost their self-evident nature, appearing flexible, negotiable and uncertain, and the distinction between what is true and what is false has become blurred. The contributors to this book from the field of cultural and social sciences look at this problem area from their respective disciplinary perspectives. The topic of lies becomes particularly important, with the authors systematising and historically contextualising the concept and its appearance. The book examines lies in politics, language–image constellations, and recent developments in media technology as well as thematisations of lies in literature.     Postcolonial legacies continue to impact upon the Global South and this edited collection examines their influence on systems of policing, security management and social ordering. Expanding the Southern Criminology agenda, the book critically examines social harms, violence and war crimes, human rights abuses, environmental degradation and the criminalization of protest. The book asks how current states of policing came about, their consequences and whose interests they continue to serve through vivid international case studies, including prison struggles in Latin America and the misuse of military force. Challenging current criminological thinking on the Global South, the book considers how police and state overreach can undermine security and perpetuate racism and social conflict.

    Since the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021 and the Taliban took power in the country, the local branch of Islamic State (IS) - the so-called Khorasan Province - has carried out dozens of attacks on Taliban "security forces" and civilians, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Many attacks have been in the old IS stronghold of Nangarhar in eastern Afghanistan and in the capital, Kabul, but the jihadists have also been active in Kandahar, Kunduz and Kunar. The latest terrorist acts demonstrate the enormous challenge that IS poses for the Taliban. Owing to a lack of funds, personnel and structures, the latter is unable to exercise effective control over all Afghan territory and significantly weaken IS. In fact, there is a danger that these shortfalls will allow IS to expand its terrorist activities beyond Afghanistan. While the neighbouring states of Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are particularly at risk, Europe, too, could become a target.

    Die Beiträge untersuchen historische und aktuelle Sicherheitsentwürfe, d.h. auf kollektive Sicherheit zielende Diskurse und Praktiken, hinsichtlich ihres Wechselverhältnisses mit Differenzkategorien wie Gender, „race“, Stand, Religion etc. und deren Überschneidung. Was leistet die historische Perspektive für eine intersektionale Kritik der Sicherheitsforschung? Multidisziplinär und anhand empirisch vielfältiger Untersuchungsgegenstände vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart werden Wahrnehmung, Deutung und Effekte sicherheitsrelevanter Praktiken und Diskurse analysiert. Der Band richtet sich an ein Fachpublikum aus geschichts- und sozialwissenschaftlicher (Sicherheits-)Forschung, aber auch an eine breitere, an Sicherheit und Differenz interessierte Öffentlichkeit. The contributions in this book examine historical and current conceptions of security, i.e. discourses and practices aimed at collective security, with regard to their interrelationship with categories of diversity such as gender, race, status, religion, etc. and how and where they intersect. What does a historical perspective contribute to an intersectional critique of security studies? Multidisciplinary and using diverse empirical research subjects from the Middle Ages to the present, the book analyses the perception, significance and effects of practices and discourses relevant to security. It will appeal to experts engaged in historical and social science (security) research, but also to a broader readership interested in security and diversity.
