Hopkins and Heidegger is an exploration of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetics through the work of Martin Heidegger. Brian Willems argues that the work of Hopkins does no less than propose solutions to a number of hitherto unresolved questions regarding Heidegger's later writings, vitalizing the concepts of both writers beyond their local contexts. Willems examines a number of cross-sections between the poetry and thought of Hopkins and the philosophy of Heidegger. While neither writer ever directly addressed the other's work--Hopkins died the year Heidegger was born, 1899, and Heidegger never turns his thoughts on poetry to the Victorians--a number of similarities between the two have been noted but never fleshed out. Willems' readings of these cross-sections are centred on Hopkins' concepts of 'inscape' and 'instress' and around Heidegger's reading of both appropriation (Ereignis) and the fourfold (das Geviert). --From publisher's description

As more and more people in North America and Europe have distanced themselves from mainstream religious traditions over the past centuries, a crisis of faith has emerged and garnered much attention. But Glenn Hughes, author ofA More Beautiful Question: The Spiritual in Poetry and Art, contends that despite the withering popularity of faith-based worldviews, our times do not evince a decline in spirituality. One need only consider the search for alternative religious symbolisms, as well as the growth of groups espousing fundamentalist religious viewpoints, to recognize that spiritual concerns remain a vibrant part of life in Western culture. Hughes offers the idea that the modern crisis of faith is not a matter of vanishing spiritual concerns and energy but rather of their disorientation, even as they remain pervasive forces in human affairs. And because art is the most effective medium for spiritually evocation, it is our most significant touchstone for examining this spiritual disorientation, just as it remains a primary source of inspiration for spiritual experience. A More Beautiful Questionis concerned with how art, and especially poetry, functions as a vehicle of spiritual expression in todays modern cultures. The book considers the meeting points of art, poetry, religion, and philosophy, in part through examining the treatments of consciousness, transcendence, and art in the writings of twentieth-century philosophers Eric Voegelin and Bernard Lonergan. A major portion ofA More Beautiful Questionis devoted to detailed case studies of three influential modern poets: Gerard Manley Hopkins, Emily Dickinson, and T.S. Eliot. In these and its other chapters, the book examines the human need for artistic symbols that evoke the mystery of transcendence, the ways in which poetry and art illuminate the spiritual meanings of freedom, and the benefits of an individuals loving study of great literature and art. A More Beautiful Questionhas a distinctive aimto clarify the spiritual functions of art and poetry in relation to contemporary confusion about transcendent realityand it meets that goal in a manner accessible by the layperson as well as the scholar. By examining how the best art and poetry address our need for spiritual orientation, this book makes a valuable contribution to the philosophies of art, literature, and religion, and brings deserved attention to the significance of the spiritual in the study of these disciplines Annotation Childhood, transcendence, and art -- Spiritual functions of art -- Elemental meaning and Gerard Manley Hopkins -- Emily Dickinson and the unknown God -- A pattern of timeless moments : T.S. Eliot's Four quartets -- Art and spiritual growth.

Taking its point of initiation from the long-standing dialogue between poetry and philosophy concerning their respective claims to contrasting orders of insight, this book tackles issues relating to the differing conditions of knowledge and insights relating to language and thought imparted by 'modern' poets and philosophers, from Kant and Wordsworth to Adorno and Hardy. The book draws on recent debates in literary theory and philosophy in order to outline a new 'dialogic' approach for conduc

"For the first time in almost half a century, the world of Hopkins is examined as an indivisible whole. The Split World of Gerard Manley Hopkins is a synthetic study of Hopkins's writings, written within a framework of semiotic phenomenology. It analyzes the general configuration of meanings found in Hopkins's writings as an oeuvre, including their theological, as well as existential, aspects. With an eye on this general structure, the book addresses (and reassesses) all of the central issues of Hopkins's poetry: from ontological questions and theological complexities to the representation of existence in its facticity and the orders of desire. The problems of poetic forms and techniques are analyzed in detail in all those cases when they become relevant to the questions of poetic meaning. After explaining the book's theoretical approach in the introduction, chapter 1 addresses Hopkins's representation of ontological problems in their relation to aesthetic contemplation, on the one hand, and mystical experience, on the other. In addition, it analyzes the diverse semiotic-both allegorical and typological-structures of Hopkins's poetic universe. Chapter 2 discusses his representation of the supposedly universal aspects of human existence: from mortality to sexual desire. Chapter 3 examines Hopkins's representation of ̀being in culture': the subversive use of political discourse, his struggle with the anxiety of poetic influence, and the images of metaphysical indeterminacy. Finally, chapter 4 focuses on poetic strategies that create a discontinuity between the theological and the existential realms, or between the poetic and scholastic modalities of discourse. The conclusion exemplifies the possibilities of synthetic readings of his poems, which are carried out with close attention to all the elements discussed previously. These readings highlight the complexity of Hopkins's texts, the counterplay of different semantic elements, their complex and ambivalent philosophical statements, and their exceptional artistic virtuosity."--Publisher's description Introduction : toward Hopkins -- Being and the world -- Hopkins's existential perspective -- Identity and culture -- Techniques of retention -- Conclusion : split consciousness.

"In Rhythm and Will in Victorian Poetry, Matthew Campbell explores the work of four Victorian poets - Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins and Hardy - as they show a consistent and innovative concern with questions of human agency and will. The Victorians saw the virtues attendant upon a strong will as central to themselves and to their culture, and Victorian poetry strove to find an aesthetic form to represent this sense of the human will. Through close study of the metre, rhyme and rhythm of a wide range of poems - including monologue, lyric and elegy - Campbell reveals how closely technical questions of poetics are related, in the work of these poets, to issues of psychology, ethics and social change. He goes on to discuss more general questions of poetics, and the implications of the achievement of the Victorian poets in a wider context, from Milton through Romanticism and into contemporary critical debate."--Jacket

"This nuanced yet accessible study is the first to examine the range of religious experience imagined in Hopkins's writing. By exploring the shifting way in which Hopkins imagines religious belief in individual history, Martin Dubois contests established views of his poetry as a unified project. Combining detailed close readings with extensive historical research, Dubois argues that the spiritual awareness manifest in Hopkins's poetry is varied and fluctuating, and that this is less a failure of his intellectual system than a sign of the experiential character of much of his poetry's thought. Individual chapters focus on biblical language and prayer, as well as on the spiritual ideal seen in the figures of the soldier and the martyr, and on Hopkins's ideas of death, judgement, heaven and hell. Offering fresh interpretations of the major poems, this volume reveals a more diverse and exploratory poet than has been recognised"-- Machine generated contents note: Introduction; Part I. Forms of Devotion: 1. Bibles; 2. Prayer; Part II. Models of Faith: 3. The soldier; 4. The martyr; Part III. Last Things: 5. Death and judgement; 6. Heaven and hell
