    In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists

Im Zentrum der Helena steht der Grundsatz, dass die Rede (der lógos) ein "großer Herrscher" ist und dass stets derjenige im Rededuell - in der Volksversammlung, vor Gericht oder in privaten Auseinandersetzungen - den Sieg davonträgt, der sich auf die Redekunst versteht, unabhängig davon, ob die Rede wahr ist oder nicht. The first comprehensive commentary on the work, this book considers its philological, literary, philosophical and historical significance in every aspect. The introduction places Helen in the context of Gorgias' life, work and legacy, making this volume an important contribution to the field of Gorgias studies Gorgias' Lobrede auf Helena gehört zu den wichtigsten Texten der Sophistik. Im Zentrum der Helena steht der Grundsatz, dass die Rede (der lógos) ein "großer Herrscher" ist und dass stets derjenige im Rededuell - in der Volksversammlung, vor Gericht oder in privaten Auseinandersetzungen - den Sieg davonträgt, der sich auf die Redekunst versteht, unabhängig davon, ob die Rede wahr ist oder nicht. Für diese Schrift wird hier der erste umfassende Kommentar vorgelegt, der die philologischen, literaturwissenschaftlichen, philosophischen und historischen Fragestellungen, die in der Helena eng zusammenhängen, gleichermaßen beachtet. Bedingung hierfür ist, dass die Gorgias-Forschung insgesamt auf eine breitere Grundlage gestellt wird. In der Einleitung werden einige grundsätzliche Fragen neu erörtert: Wann lebte Gorgias? Was schrieb er? Wer las seine Schriften? Wann sind diese Schriften entstanden? Welchen Einfluss hatte er auf seine Nachfolger? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen werden auch solche antiken Zeugnisse zu Leben, Werk und Wirkung des Gorgias herangezogen, die bislang in den maßgeblichen Testimoniensammlungen fehlen

Aimed at advanced readers as well, this book stresses an appreciation of how Homer has ordered his narrative, covering such topics as character interaction, family relationships, elements of poetic language, and the symbolic treatment of death, rebirth, growth, and knowledge.     In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists

    From the dawn of European literature, the figure of Medea--best known as the helpmate of Jason and murderer of her own children--has inspired artists in all fields throughout all centuries. Euripides, Seneca, Corneille, Delacroix, Anouilh, Pasolini, Maria Callas, Martha Graham, Samuel Barber, and Diana Rigg are among the many who have given Medea life on stage, film, and canvas, through music and dance, from ancient Greek drama to Broadway. In seeking to understand the powerful hold Medea has had on our imaginations for nearly three millennia, a group of renowned scholars here examines the major representations of Medea in myth, art, and ancient and contemporary literature, as well as the philosophical, psychological, and cultural questions these portrayals raise. The result is a comprehensive and nuanced look at one of the most captivating mythic figures of all time. Unlike most mythic figures, whose attributes remain constant throughout mythology, Medea is continually changing in the wide variety of stories that circulated during antiquity. She appears as enchantress, helper-maiden, infanticide, fratricide, kidnapper, founder of cities, and foreigner. Not only does Medea's checkered career illuminate the opposing concepts of self and other, it also suggests the disturbing possibility of otherness within self.
