    In this book, John H. Smith investigates the influences of classical and humanistic rhetoric on Hegel's theory and practice of philosophical representation. Smith focuses on Hegel's concept of Bildung (roughly, education, development, or formation), which occupies a central position in his philosophy. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author demonstrates that Hegel's philosophy of Bildung depends on his own Bildung as a writer of philosophy-a formative education that followed the principles of traditional rhetorical systems. In addition, Smith provides an analysis of each stage of Hegel's philosophy in terms of a different rhetorical strategy that he finds governing Hegel's writing.     'Hegel's Aesthetics' is the first comprehensive interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of art in English in 30 years. In a new analysis of Hegel's notorious 'end of art' thesis, it argues for a variety of ways art ends, including historical, conceptual, and prosaic endings. It shows the indispensability of Hegel's aesthetics for understanding his philosophical idealism and introduces a new claim about his account of aesthetic experience. In contrast to previous interpretations, it argues for considering Hegel's discussion of individual arts - architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry - on their own terms, unlocking new insights about his theories of perception, feeling, selfhood, and freedom.

S'ouvrant sur la faillite spéculative des singuliers sensibles au début de la Phénoménologie de l'Esprit, le présent ouvrage ne pourra se conclure qu'avec le triomphe de la Singularité dialectique ne laissant rien - pas même ou surtout pas son Autre - hors d'elle-même, lorsque ce triomphe sera mesuré à l'aune de la conceptualité chrétienne dont se revendique le protestant Hegel, mais qu'il trahit sur un point capital en voulant l'accomplir. Mais Saturne, c'est aussi le "soleil noir" des alchimistes, que l'on a pu associer au soleil obombré au moment de la mort du Christ : quoi de plus naturel, dès lors, que d'en faire l'astre tutélaire d'un système qui se construit tout entier autour d'un "Vendredi saint spéculatif" ? Car, comme Dante dut traverser les neuf cercles de l'Enfer avant d'espérer pouvoir s'élever au Purgatoire, puis au Paradis, l'homme pensant doit traverser le Système de la Science, en subir peut-être les glaçantes tentations, en méditer en tous cas la fascinante rigueur conceptuelle, pour pouvoir ensuite espérer voir scintiller devant lui les lueurs matinales d'un inattendu "dimanche de Pâques spéculatif"."--Page 4 of cover

    "Hegel's philosophy of religion contains an implicit political theology. When viewed in connection with his wider work on subjectivity, history and politics, this political theology is a resource for apocalyptic thinking. In a world of climate change, inequality, oppressive gender roles and racism, Hegel can be used to theorise the hope found in the end of that world. Histories of apocalyptic thinking draw a line connecting the medieval prophet Joachim of Fiore and Marx. This line passes through Hegel, who transforms the relationship between philosophy and theology by philosophically employing theological concepts to critique the world. Jacob Taubes provides an example of this Hegelian political theology, weaving Christianity, Judaism and philosophy to develop an apocalypticism that is not invested in the world. Taubes awaits the end of the world knowing that apocalyptic destruction is also a form of creation. Catherine Malabou discusses this relationship between destruction and creation in terms of plasticity. Using plasticity to reformulate apocalypticism allows for a form of apocalyptic thinking that is immanent and materialist. Together Hegel, Taubes and Malabou provide the resources for thinking about why the world should end.     An advance on recent revisionist thinking about Hegelian philosophy, this book interprets Hegel's achievement as part of a revolutionary modernization of ancient philosophical thought initiated by Kant. In particular, Paul Redding argues that Hegel's use of hermeneutics, an emerging way of thinking objectively about intentional human subjects, overcame the major obstacle encountered by Kant in his attempt to modernize philosophy. The result was the first genuinely modern, hermeneutic, and "nonmetaphysical" philosophy.Redding describes Hegel's accomplishment in terms of a development of Kant's revolution in philosophy, a "Copernican " revolution analogous to that which initiated modern science. He shows how the heterodox pantheistic views and hermeneutic social thought which merged at the end of the eighteenth century provided a fruitful environment for the transformation that Kantian idealism underwent within the work of Schelling and the early Hegel. He argues that Hegel overcame Schelling's pantheistic metaphysics with the Phenomenology of Spirit and developed a post-metaphysical hermeneutic mode of philosophy.Redding goes on to show how the social theory of Hegel's Philosophy of Right and the conceptual structures of his allegedly most metaphysical work, the Science of Logic, are systematically linked to the hermeneutic insights of the Phenomenology. Against this background, Hegel's works are freed from traditional misunderstandings. Redding demonstrates that Hegel's analyses of modernity and the modern state surpass the one-sided views of Adam Smith and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, providing a coherent framework for modern social and political thought

    "Hegel is known as "the father of art history," yet recent scholarship has overlooked his contributions. This is the first comprehensive interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of art in English in thirty years. In a new analysis of Hegel's notorious "end of art" thesis, Hegel's Aesthetics shows the indispensability of Hegel's aesthetics for understanding his philosophical idealism and introduces a new claim about his account of aesthetic experience. 0In a departure from previous interpretations, Lydia Moland argues for considering Hegel's discussion of individual arts-architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry-on their own terms, unlocking new insights about his theories of perception, feeling, selfhood, and freedom. This new approach allows Hegel's philosophy to engage with modern aesthetic theories and opens new possibilities for applying Hegel's aesthetics to contemporary art. Moland further elucidates his controversial0analysis of symbolic, classical, and romantic art through clarifying Hegel's examples of each. By incorporating newly available sources from Hegel's lectures on art, this book widely expands our understanding of the particular artworks Hegel discusses as well as the theories he rejects.     Hegel und Hölderlin kamen 1770 auf eine Welt, die Schwäbisch sprach. Erst im legendären Tübinger Stift lernten sich die beiden angehenden Theologen kennen und schlossen Freundschaft. Jahre später wurden sie Hauslehrer, der eine hier, der andere dort. Von Anfang 1797 bis zum Sommer 1800 konnten sie sich wieder regelmäßiger sehen und über Philosophie, Dichtung und die Liebe reden. Dann liefen ihre Schicksalsbahnen, radikal und unerbittlich, in konträren Richtungen auseinander: Hölderlin, der sein Leben auf die wundersame Poesie setzte, landete als friedlicher Verrückter, der Verse schrieb, in einem Turm in Tübingen, und Hegel, der dem vernünftigen Weltgeist auf die Schulter klopfte, stieg zum gefeierten Berufsphilosophen auf, mit Sitz in Berlin. „Aber trotz vieler schöner Gedanken, essayistischer Volten, reizvoller Spekulationen – Rathgebs Buch hat doch etwas Unbefriedigendes. Man bekommt seine beiden Protagonisten am Ende nicht recht zu greifen – vielleicht weil sie dem Autor selbst immer wieder entgleiten... So bleibt ein zwiespältiges Gefühl zurück: Einerseits ist Rathgebs „Zwei Hälften des Lebens“ ein Essay, der durchaus suggestiv in eine verwirrend spektakuläre Zeit entführt; andererseits ist es eine Studie, die mehr im Staunen verharrt und weniger zum genauen Betrachten tendiert. Vertane Zeit ist die Lektüre jedoch nicht. Man bekommt zumindest Laune, wieder einmal Hölderlin zu lesen oder es mit Hegel zu versuchen, auch wenn man sich – wie Eberhard Rathgeb – dabei im Dunkeln verirren kann“ (deutschlandfunk.de)

    In this book, John H. Smith investigates the influences of classical and humanistic rhetoric on Hegel's theory and practice of philosophical representation. Smith focuses on Hegel's concept of Bildung (roughly, education, development, or formation), which occupies a central position in his philosophy. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author demonstrates that Hegel's philosophy of Bildung depends on his own Bildung as a writer of philosophy-a formative education that followed the principles of traditional rhetorical systems. In addition, Smith provides an analysis of each stage of Hegel's philosophy in terms of a different rhetorical strategy that he finds governing Hegel's writing. By examining how rhetoric enters into the formation of Hegel's anti-rhetorical dialectics, Smith reveals the origins of numerous contradictory strategies in Hegel's thought.The first book in any language to explore the rhetorical background of Hegel's philosophy, The Spirit and Its Letter addresses issues at the intersection of contemporary literary theory, philosophy, rhetoric, and intellectual history

In a new analysis of Hegel's notorious "end of art" thesis, Hegel's Aesthetics shows the indispensability of Hegel's aesthetics for understanding his philosophical idealism and introduces a new claim about his account of aesthetic experience. 0In a departure from previous interpretations, Lydia Moland argues for considering Hegel's discussion of individual arts-architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and poetry-on their own terms, unlocking new insights about his theories of perception, feeling, selfhood, and freedom.
