    Der Band ist ein Versuch, auf die Transformationsprozesse der europäischen Gesellschaften, die ab 1989 in Mittel- und Osteuropa stattgefunden haben, zurückzublicken und ihre literarischen, historischen und kulturellen Zeugnisse zu analysieren, die innerhalb von mehr als dreissig Jahren in ausgewählten postsozialistischen Ländern (Polen, Russland und Balkanländer) entstanden sind. Der Schwerpunkt dieses Bandes liegt auf Erzählweisen über Gesellschaften im Wandel, auf der kulturellen Symbolik dieser Zeit, auf der Darstellung des Weges zur Demokratisierung der Kultur, des öffentlichen Lebens und der Institutionen. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen ebenfalls die Formen der Regionalisierung von Kulturen, der Emanzipation von Sprachen und kleineren Kulturen oder neu entstehende Identitätsdiskurse und ihr Einfluss auf Gesellschaften. Die Begriffe von Nation, Gemeinschaft und Erinnerung spielen dabei eine wichtige Rolle.This volume is an attempt to look back at the transformation processes of European societies that took place in Central and Eastern Europe from 1989 onwards and to analyse their literary, historical and cultural testimonies that emerged within more than thirty years in selected post-socialist countries (Poland, Russia and Balkan countries). The focus of this volume is on narratives about societies in transition, on the cultural symbolism of this period, on the depiction of the path to democratisation of culture, public life and institutions. It also focuses on the forms of regionalisation of cultures, the emancipation of languages and smaller cultures, or emerging discourses of identity and their influence on post-transition societies. While American readers were devouring Kafka, Czech writers and translators were eagerly following cultural trends in the United States, importing and creatively appropriating works by Langston Hughes and Ernest Hemingway. Bridging these two worlds, Goodman reconstructs the journeys of American writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Arthur Miller, Philip Roth, and John Updike to Prague, where they established lasting friendships with their Czech counterparts, including Josef Škvorecký, Václav Havel, Ivan Klíma, Ludvík Vaculík, and Milan Kundera.     Arabic printing began in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Levant through the association of the scholar and printer Antim the Iberian, later a metropolitan of Wallachia, and Athanasios III Dabbas, twice patriarch of Antioch, when the latter, as metropolitan of Aleppo, was sojourning in Bucharest. This partnership resulted in the first Greek and Arabic editions of the Book of the Divine Liturgies (Snagov, 1701) and the Horologion (Bucharest, 1702). With the tools and expertise that he acquired in Wallachia, Dabbas established in Aleppo in 1705 the first Arabic-type press in the Ottoman Empire. After the Church of Antioch divided into separate Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic Patriarchates in 1724, a new press was opened for Arabic-speaking Greek Catholics by Abdallah Za ir in insara ( ur al-Suwayr), Lebanon. Likewise, in 1752-1753, a press active at the Church of Saint George in Beirut printed Orthodox books that preserved elements of the Aleppo editions and were reprinted for decades. This book tells the story of the first Arabic-type presses in the Ottoman Empire which provided church books to the Arabic-speaking Christians, irrespective of their confession, through the efforts of ecclesiastical leaders such as the patriarchs Silvester of Antioch and Sofronios II of Constantinople and financial support from East European rulers like prince Constantin Brâncoveanu and hetman Ivan Mazepa

    "This volume brings together articles written by experts in the literary history of Central and Eastern European literatures. Focused on the export of Socialist Realism into Europe after WWII, the authors look not so much at similarities as at the particularities of each specific national and cultural context. The introduction of the Soviet cultural model was not quite the smooth endeavour that it was intended to be; rather, it was always a work in progress, often born out of a give-and-take with the local authorities, intellectuals and interest groups. Those in charge had to negotiate the precarious terrain of local cultural and political controversies, caught between tradition and innovation in some countries, or, in others, between a sincere interest in the new concept of art and a complete refusal to accept new rules. Paradoxically, among all the different experiences of introducing, importing imposing Socialist Realism in the specific national contexts, the one thing in common is that each case was a response to the local conditions, a process of working through the challenge of inscribing a staunch theory into the daily reality of an unfamiliar country, language and culture."...     Berlin, 1962. Morale is at rock bottom in East Germany, thrown into chaos by the new Berlin Wall. The Ministry for State Security is hunting for a new weapon in the war against capitalism - and their solution is stranger than fiction. Rather than guns, tanks, or bombs, the Stasi resolve to fight the enemy through rhyme and verse, winning the Culture Wars through poetry - and the result is the most bizarre book club in history. Consisting of 15 secret agents - from WW2 veterans to schoolboy recruits - the 'Working Group of Writing Chekists' met monthly from 1962 until the Wall fell. In a classroom adorned with portraits of Lenin, the spies wrote their own poetry and were taught verse, metre, and rhetoric by East German poet Uwe Berger. The regime hoped that poetry would sharpen the Stasi's 'party sword' by affirming the spies' belief in the words of Marx and Lenin, as well as strengthening the socialist faith of their comrades. But as the agents became steeped in poetry, revelling in its imaginative ambiguity, the result was the opposite. Rather than entrenching state ideology, they began to radically question it - and following a radical role reversal, the GDR's secret weapon dramatically backfired. Religious deviation and innovation, theurgy, necromancy, black and erotic magic, the topoi of an emperor-magician, a semi-divine emperor-healer/saviour and a witch/poisoner, all play an important role in the analyzed texts.
