    Bolesław Prus and the Jews shows the complexity of the so-called "Jewish question" in nineteenth-century Congress Poland and especially its significance in Prus' social concept reflected in his extensive body of journalistic work, fiction, and treatises. The book traces Prus' evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a "non-existent" partitioned Poland. The portrait of Prus that emerges is surprisingly ambivalent

    Der Krieg Russlands gegen Napoleon im Jahr 1812 lieferte einen entscheidenden Impuls für die Herausbildung der russischen nationalen Identität. The book shows how the filmmakers of the long 1960s built stories around male protagonists who felt disoriented by a world that was becoming increasingly suburbanized, rebellious, consumerist, household-oriented, and scientifically complex. The dramatic tension of 1960s cinema revolved around the male protagonists’ inability to navigate the challenges of postwar life. Selling over three billion tickets annually, the Soviet film industry became a fault line of postwar cultural contestation. By examining both the discussions surrounding the period’s most controversial movies as well as the cultural context in which these debates happened, the book captures the official and popular reactions to the dizzying transformations of Soviet society after Stalin

    Der Band ist ein Versuch, auf die Transformationsprozesse der europäischen Gesellschaften, die ab 1989 in Mittel- und Osteuropa stattgefunden haben, zurückzublicken und ihre literarischen, historischen und kulturellen Zeugnisse zu analysieren, die innerhalb von mehr als dreissig Jahren in ausgewählten postsozialistischen Ländern (Polen, Russland und Balkanländer) entstanden sind. Der Schwerpunkt dieses Bandes liegt auf Erzählweisen über Gesellschaften im Wandel, auf der kulturellen Symbolik dieser Zeit, auf der Darstellung des Weges zur Demokratisierung der Kultur, des öffentlichen Lebens und der Institutionen. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen ebenfalls die Formen der Regionalisierung von Kulturen, der Emanzipation von Sprachen und kleineren Kulturen oder neu entstehende Identitätsdiskurse und ihr Einfluss auf Gesellschaften. Die Begriffe von Nation, Gemeinschaft und Erinnerung spielen dabei eine wichtige Rolle.This volume is an attempt to look back at the transformation processes of European societies that took place in Central and Eastern Europe from 1989 onwards and to analyse their literary, historical and cultural testimonies that emerged within more than thirty years in selected post-socialist countries (Poland, Russia and Balkan countries). The focus of this volume is on narratives about societies in transition, on the cultural symbolism of this period, on the depiction of the path to democratisation of culture, public life and institutions. It also focuses on the forms of regionalisation of cultures, the emancipation of languages and smaller cultures, or emerging discourses of identity and their influence on post-transition societies.     Catastrophic wartime casualties and postwar discomfort with the successes of women who had served in combat roles combined to shatter prewar ideals about what service meant for Soviet masculine identity. The soldier had to be re-imagined and resold to a public that had just emerged from the Second World War, and a younger generation suspicious of state control. In doing so, Soviet military culture wrote women out and attempted to re-establish soldiering as the premier form of masculinity in society. Military Masculinity and Postwar Recovery in the Soviet Union combines textual and visual analysis, as well as archival research to highlight the multiple narratives that contributed to rebuilding military identities.     Arabic printing began in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Levant through the association of the scholar and printer Antim the Iberian, later a metropolitan of Wallachia, and Athanasios III Dabbas, twice patriarch of Antioch, when the latter, as metropolitan of Aleppo, was sojourning in Bucharest. This partnership resulted in the first Greek and Arabic editions of the Book of the Divine Liturgies (Snagov, 1701) and the Horologion (Bucharest, 1702). With the tools and expertise that he acquired in Wallachia, Dabbas established in Aleppo in 1705 the first Arabic-type press in the Ottoman Empire. After the Church of Antioch divided into separate Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic Patriarchates in 1724, a new press was opened for Arabic-speaking Greek Catholics by Abdallah Za ir in insara ( ur al-Suwayr), Lebanon. Likewise, in 1752-1753, a press active at the Church of Saint George in Beirut printed Orthodox books that preserved elements of the Aleppo editions and were reprinted for decades. This book tells the story of the first Arabic-type presses in the Ottoman Empire which provided church books to the Arabic-speaking Christians, irrespective of their confession, through the efforts of ecclesiastical leaders such as the patriarchs Silvester of Antioch and Sofronios II of Constantinople and financial support from East European rulers like prince Constantin Brâncoveanu and hetman Ivan Mazepa

The book traces Prus' evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a "non-existent" partitioned Poland. The portrait of Prus that emerges is surprisingly ambivalent

Focused on the export of Socialist Realism into Europe after WWII, the authors look not so much at similarities as at the particularities of each specific national and cultural context. The introduction of the Soviet cultural model was not quite the smooth endeavour that it was intended to be; rather, it was always a work in progress, often born out of a give-and-take with the local authorities, intellectuals and interest groups. Those in charge had to negotiate the precarious terrain of local cultural and political controversies, caught between tradition and innovation in some countries, or, in others, between a sincere interest in the new concept of art and a complete refusal to accept new rules. Paradoxically, among all the different experiences of introducing, importing imposing Socialist Realism in the specific national contexts, the one thing in common is that each case was a response to the local conditions, a process of working through the challenge of inscribing a staunch theory into the daily reality of an unfamiliar country, language and culture."...     Bolesław Prus and the Jews shows the complexity of the so-called "Jewish question" in nineteenth-century Congress Poland and especially its significance in Prus' social concept reflected in his extensive body of journalistic work, fiction, and treatises. The book traces Prus' evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a "non-existent" partitioned Poland. The portrait of Prus that emerges is surprisingly ambivalent

Historical Transylvania, at the intersection of the Habsburg Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, offers the platform for their multi-level reading of the main themes in Liviu Rebreanu's 1920 novel Ion. Topics range from the question of the region's capitalist integration to antisemitism and the enslavement of Roma to multilingualism, gender relations, and religion. Creolizing the Modern develops a comparative method for engaging with areas of the world that have inherited multiple, conflicting imperial and anti-imperial histories.

Nach dem Zusammenbruch Jugoslawiens stellte sich die brisante Frage, wer die Stelle des einstigen Helden Titos einnehmen und das von ihm hinterlassene visuelle Vakuum füllen würde. In Ikonen der Nationen analysiert Klaudija Sabo die künstlerischen Produktionen, die seit den 1980ern bis in die Gegenwart neue HeldInnenfiguren kreieren und damit nationale Identitätsbildungen in Kroatien und Serbien konstituieren. Um einen Stereotyp des Helden heraus zufiltern, wurde eine Bandbreite an bewegten und statischen Quellen, darunter Filme, Plakate, Postkarten, Comics, Karikaturen, Skulpturen sowie Malerei, herangezogen und miteinander in Bezug gesetzt. Damit liefert die Arbeit sowohl einen Beitrag zur vergleichenden Geschichte der Nationsbildungsprozesse als auch zum Verständnis der gewaltvollen Konflikte in den 1990er Jahren The study examines how national myths in the former Yugoslavia were transformed in the 1990s, impacting the identity formation of ethnic groups and other collectives. It redefines the ways pilgrimage can be understood and offers new methods for investigating the meaning and importance of Hajj for generations of premodern and modern believers.     Der Krieg Russlands gegen Napoleon im Jahr 1812 lieferte einen entscheidenden Impuls für die Herausbildung der russischen nationalen Identität. Anhand der Entwicklung der russischen historischen Prosa sowie am Beispiel der bisher kaum untersuchten pädagogischen, populärwissenschaftlichen und literarischen Geschichtsdarstellungen im Jubiläumsjahr 1912 lassen sich unterschiedliche Funktionen des Gedenkens an den »Vaterländischen Krieg« in Russland 100 Jahre später aufzeigen. Konstantin Rapps Analyse gewährt einen Einblick in die Konstruktion von Eigen- und Fremdbildern und vermittelt einen differenzierteren Blick auf das Verhältnis von Russland und dem Westen und somit auch auf aktuelle politische Prozesse
