    Fausts Frage, was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält, ist häufig gesellschaftstheoretisch gedeutet worden. So verstanden macht sie die Kohäsionskräfte des sozialen Ganzen im Spannungsfeld von Individuum und Gemeinschaft zum Problem. Angesichts der aktuellen Verschärfung politischer, ökonomischer und kultureller Konflikte stellt sie sich brennender denn je. Ludwig K. Pfeiffers Buch wirft die genannte Frage in provokanter Weise auf. Es erhebt das Symposion, das Trinkgelage im frühen und klassischen Athen, zum Modell einer gelungenen Stiftung von Solidarität und spürt seinen Verwandlungen oder problematischen Ersatzformen in kultur-, sozial- und literaturgeschichtlicher Quellen nach. Pfeiffer identifiziert kritische Schwellen vor allem im 18. sowie im 20. Jahrhundert und erörtert, ob gegenwärtig Potentiale einer Versöhnung von Individualismus und Kommunitarismus existieren
