    Press "ONE" for English examines how Americans form opinions on language policy issues such as declaring English the official language, printing documents in multiple languages, and bilingual education. Deborah Schildkraut shows that people's conceptions of American national identity play an integral role in shaping their views. Using insights from American political thought and intellectual history, she highlights several components of that identity and shows how they are brought to bear on debates about language. Her analysis expands the range of factors typically thought to explain attitudes in such policy areas, emphasizing in particular the role that civic republicanism's call for active and responsible citizenship plays in shaping opinion on language issues. Using focus groups and survey data, Schildkraut develops a model of public conceptions of what it means to be American and demonstrates the complex ways in which people draw on these conceptions when forming and explaining their views. In so doing she illustrates how focus group methodology can help yield vital new insights into opinion formation. With the rise in the use of ballot initiatives to implement language policies, understanding opinion formation in this policy area has become imperative. This book enhances our understanding of this increasingly pressing concern, and points the way toward humane, effective, and broadly popular language policies that address the realities of American demographics in the twenty-first century while staying true to the nation's most revered values

    Biographical note: Edith Feistner und Michael Neecke, Universität Regensburg; Gisela Vollmann-Profe, Katholische Universität, Eichstätt. Against the background of the recent revival of interest evinced by Germanic studies in the medieval Order of German Knights, this study sets out to cast light on the various insights to be gained from an examination of the literature produced in the framework of this Order. The approach proceeds from the Biblical foundations of corporate identity within the brotherhood, as set out in its rules and statutes. As a result, it is in a position to relate the interpretation of the two central literary genres favored by the Order – chronicles and Biblical epics – more closely to one another than has been the case so far, drawing on selected case studies for the purpose. Im Rahmen des gegenwärtig auch auf germanistischer Seite wieder wachsenden Interesses am mittelalterlichen Deutschen Orden versteht sich die Studie als Beitrag zur Erhellung des facettenreichen Erkenntnispotenzials, das die Literatur im Deutschen Orden in sich trägt. Die Studie geht von der biblischen Fundierung des Selbstverständnisses aus, wie es in den Deutschordensregeln und -statuten formuliert wird, und bezieht deshalb anhand exemplarischer Fallstudien die beiden wesentlichen Werkgruppen der Literatur im Deutschen Orden, Chronistik und Bibelepik, interpretatorisch enger aufeinander als bisher üblich.     The aesthetics of urban life are a curious quality, one that is both highly visible and hidden, both openly influencing and subtly imprinting. These aesthetics participate in the production of places; to the way they are built, to their resisting materiality, to their image in people's minds, to advertising and to the way people respond to the place. Exploring the encounter with the aesthetics, images and material design of urban life, this book offers analytic insights into contemporary cities. It shows how photography, maps and videos play a crucial role in bringing aesthetic dimensions into urban studies.
