    The second century CE has often been described as a kind of dark period with regard to our knowledge of how the earliest Christian writings (the gospels and Paul’s letters) were transmitted and gradually came to be accepted as authoritative and then, later on, as "canonical". At the same time a number of other Christian texts, of various genres, saw the light. Some of these seem to be familiar with the gospels, or perhaps rather with gospel traditions identical or similar to those that found their way into the NT gospels. The volume focuses on representative texts and authors of the time in order to see how they have struggled to find a way to work with the NT gospels and/or the traditions behind these, while at the same time giving a place also to other extra-canonical traditions.It studies in a comparative way the reception of identifiably "canonical" and of extra-canonical traditions in the second century. It aims at discovering patterns or strategies of reception within the at first sight often rather chaotic way some of these ancient authors have cited or used these traditions. And it will look for explanations of why it took such a while before authors got used to cite gospel texts (more or less) accurately

    This article traces some of the trajectories of the Deuteronomic announcement of a ‘prophet like Moses’. After examining its meaning in the immediate context, the article first traces references to this figure in early Jewish sources. It then examines how Jesus is portrayed as the prophet of Deuteronomy 18 in the Gospels. What is meant when people ask whether Jesus could be the prophet? Would he himself identify with this figure through word and deed? What implications would such an identification have had for his contemporaries? Why does this designation only appear rarely outside of the Gospels? A further trajectory is the quotation of Deuteronomy 18:15,19 in Acts 3:22-23. What is meant by Peter’s identification of Jesus as the prophet like Moses? What does Peter link with the acceptance and rejection of this prophet? How has Luke altered the text of Deuteronomy in the application of this prediction to Jesus? The article closes with a summary and suggests implications for the understanding of early Christian rhetoric, of Israel’s response and of prophets in today’s church and society.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article is placed within the discipline of biblical studies and Jewish studies (for the reception history in early Judaism). An in-depth study of the reception of the Deuteronomic prophet like Moses in Acts 3, where the prediction is explicitly quoted and declared to be fulfilled in Jesus Christ, reveals how this reference functions for the Christology of Acts, its proclamation of the Gospel and its understanding of Israel. Those revering Moses must now listen to Jesus. To reject Jesus means to forfeit one’s membership in the people of God. This challenges studies which do not pay sufficient attention to this claim.

    Does maintaining that the Kingdom was central to Jesus’ ministry put one at odds with atonement theology? Some contemporary theologians have argued that these are mutually exclusive options, requiring one to choose between atonement theology and the Kingdom's centrality in Jesus’ ministry. Lending credence to this claim is the fact that some advocates of atonement theology have provided accounts that suggest such a dichotomy might in fact be the case. This essay investigates one such example. As a hopeful contribution to this discussion, this essay first explores how the Kingdom and atonement appear in Mark's presentation of Jesus. In addition to investigating some of the relevant Markan passages, this essay draws from the work of Schweitzer and Hengel to contend that it is indeed possible to affirm the centrality of the Kingdom in Jesus’ proclamation and still believe his death on the cross has an atoning function that serves the Kingdom's arrival.

    Das Phänomen der Polemik tritt erstmals in der philosophischen und politischen Begriffs- und Streitkultur der Griechen auf. Jüdische und christliche Lehrer und Schriftsteller verwendeten das Insturmentarium der Polemik in ihren Auseinandersetzungen über Schriftauslegung, Lehrbildung und Formierung von Ethik. Gerade in den urchristlichen Schriften spielt Polemik eine bedeutende Rolle sowohl in der Jesusüberlieferung als auch in den Paulusbriefen und in den katholischen Briefen. Für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft ist die thematische Auseinandersetzung mit der mündlichen und schriftlichen Polemik bei der Rekonstruktion der Gestalt Jesu unerlässlich. Ähnliches gilt für Paulus, der ein großer Polemiker war. Auch die Rekonstruktion der Person und Theologie des Paulus erfolgt daher wesentlich über die Analyse der rhetorischen und argumentativen Strategien seiner Polemik. In der späteren Schriftengruppe von Matthäusevangelium, Jakobusbrief und 1. Petrusbrief entsteht das faszinierende Phänomen der ethisch argumentierenden Polemik gegen sprachliche Polemik, die als Gewalt verstanden wird.     Dieser Band versammelt 31 Aufsätze von Richard Bauckham, einem bekannten Neutestamentler, von denen die meisten bereits in Zeitschriften oder Sammelbänden veröffentlicht wurden. Er deckt viele Aspekte des frühen Christentums im neuen Testament und frühen patristischen Zeiten ab. Die hauptsächlichen Themen beinhalten das Publikum und die Überlieferung des Evangeliums, apokryphe christliche Literatur und die Menschen im frühen Christentum. Diese Sammlung reflektiert die Überzeugung des Verfassers, dass die historische Untersuchung des frühen Christentums die neutestamentliche Literatur nicht isoliert von anderer frühchristlicher Literatur betrachten sollte, sondern solche Quellen wie die apostolischen Väter und die christliche apokryphe Literatur ebenso in Betracht ziehen muss. Most of these thirty-one essays by Richard Bauckham, a well-known New Testament scholar, were first published between 1979 and 2015 in journals and multi-authored volumes. Two are previously unpublished and one has not been published in English before. They range widely over early Christianity and early Christian literature in both the New Testament period and the early patristic period, reflecting the author's conviction that the historical study of early Christianity should not isolate the New Testament literature from other early Christian sources, such as the apostolic fathers and the Christian apocryphal literature. Some of the essays develop further the themes of the author's books on aspects of the Gospels, such as the intended audiences of the Gospels, the way in which Gospel traditions were transmitted, the role of the eyewitnesses in the origins of the Gospels, the importance of Papias's evidence about Gospel traditions, and the relationship between canonical and Gnostic Gospels. Some of the essays relate to important persons, such as Peter, Barnabas, Paul and James. These include a full investigation of the evidence for the martyrdom of Peter and an attempt to locate the estate of Publius where Paul stayed on Malta. There are studies of the Sabbath and the Lord's Day in both the New Testament and patristic periods. There are studies that survey most of the main categories of apocryphal Christian literature, including apocryphal Gospels and Acts, and with a special focus on the non-canonical apocalypses, such as the Apocalypse of Peter and the Latin Vision of Ezra.

    Why are conceptions of afterlife so diverse in both Jewish and Christian antiquity? This collection of essays offers explanations for this diversity through the lens of social memory theory. The contributors attempt to understand how and why received traditions about the afterlife needed to be altered, invented and even forgotten if they were to have relevance in the present. Select ancient texts conveying the hopes and fears of the afterlife are viewed as products of transmission processes that appropriated the past in conformity with identity constructs of each community. The range of literature in this collection spans from the earliest receptions of Israelite traditions within early Judaism to the Patristic/Rabbinic period.

    Why do we hate Milton's God? Victoria Silver reengages with a perennial problem in Milton studies, one whose genealogy dates back at least to the Romantics, but which finds its most cogent modern expression in William Empson's revulsion at Milton's God and Stanley Fish's defense. Thoroughly reexamining Milton's theology and its sources in Luther and Calvin, as well as theoretical parallels in the works of Wittgenstein, Cavell, Adorno, and Benjamin, Silver contends that this repugnance is not extrinsic but deliberately cultivated in the theodicy of Paradise Lost. From the vantage of a world riven by injustice, deity can appear to contradict its own revelation, with the result that we experience a God divided against himself. For as Job found in his sufferings, that God appears more ruse than redeemer. Milton's irony recreates this religious predicament in Paradise Lost to the intractable perplexity of his readers, who have in their turn fashioned an equally dissociated Milton--at once unconscious and calculating, heterodox and doctrinaire, heroic and intolerable. Silver argues that, ultimately, these contrary Gods and antithetical Miltons arise from the sense we want to give the speaker's justification, which rather than ratifying our assumptions of meaning and the incoherence they foster, seeks fundamentally to reform them and thus to justify God's ways.

    Das Phänomen der Polemik tritt erstmals in der philosophischen und politischen Begriffs- und Streitkultur der Griechen auf. Jüdische und christliche Lehrer und Schriftsteller verwendeten das Insturmentarium der Polemik in ihren Auseinandersetzungen über Schriftauslegung, Lehrbildung und Formierung von Ethik. Gerade in den urchristlichen Schriften spielt Polemik eine bedeutende Rolle sowohl in der Jesusüberlieferung als auch in den Paulusbriefen und in den katholischen Briefen. Für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft ist die thematische Auseinandersetzung mit der mündlichen und schriftlichen Polemik bei der Rekonstruktion der Gestalt Jesu unerlässlich. Ähnliches gilt für Paulus, der ein großer Polemiker war. Auch die Rekonstruktion der Person und Theologie des Paulus erfolgt daher wesentlich über die Analyse der rhetorischen und argumentativen Strategien seiner Polemik. In der späteren Schriftengruppe von Matthäusevangelium, Jakobusbrief und 1. Petrusbrief entsteht das faszinierende Phänomen der ethisch argumentierenden Polemik gegen sprachliche Polemik, die als Gewalt verstanden wird.
