    Long description: Das autonome Subjekt ist in der Krise. Wie lässt sich aber Handlungsfähigkeit ohne Rückgriff auf eine unabhängige Instanz im Individuum denken? Anhand der Arbeiten von Butler, Foucault und Marx rekonstruiert Hanna Meißner am Beispiel der Geschlechterdifferenz unterschiedliche strukturelle Dimensionen einer historischen Konstellation, in der Autonomie als Verleugnung der Abhängigkeit eine Bedingung subjektiver Handlungsfähigkeit darstellt. Zugleich wird damit eine Kritikstrategie formuliert, die an den Dynamiken dieser spezifischen Form ansetzt und Handlungsfähigkeit als historisch bedingte Möglichkeit der Subjekte begreift, sich zu den Verhältnissen verhalten zu können

Yet just as these areas have become more openly inclusive to an audience beyond heterosexual white men, there has also been an intense backlash, most famously in 2015's Gamergate controversy, when the tension between feminist bloggers, misogynistic gamers, and internet journalists came to a head. The place for gender in superhero narratives now represents a sort of battleground, with important changes in the industry at stake. These seismic shifts...both in the creation of superhero media and in their critical and reader reception...need reassessment not only of the role of women in comics, but also of how American society conceives of masculinity. Gender and the Superhero Narrative launches ten essays that explore the point where social justice meets the Justice League.     In France as elsewhere in recent years, legislative debates over single-parent households, same-sex unions, new reproductive technologies, transsexuality, and other challenges to long-held assumptions about the structure of family and kinship relations have been deeply divisive. What strikes many as uniquely French, however, is the extent to which many of these discussions-whether in legislative chambers, courtrooms, or the mass media-have been conducted in the frequently abstract vocabularies of anthropology and psychoanalysis.In this highly original book, Camille Robcis seeks to explain why and how academic discourses on kinship have intersected and overlapped with political debates on the family-and on the nature of French republicanism itself. She focuses on the theories of Claude Levi-Strauss and Jacques Lacan, both of whom highlighted the interdependence of the sexual and the social by positing a direct correlation between kinship and socialization. Robcis traces how their ideas gained recognition not only from French social scientists but also from legislators and politicians who relied on some of the most obscure and difficult concepts of structuralism to enact a series of laws concerning the family.Levi-Strauss and Lacan constructed the heterosexual family as a universal trope for social and psychic integration, and this understanding of the family at the root of intersubjectivity coincided with the role that the family has played in modern French law and public policy. The Law of Kinship contributes to larger conversations about the particularities of French political culture, the nature of sexual difference, and the problem of reading and interpretation in intellectual history

    How can humour and irony in writing both create and destroy boundaries? In the Belly of a Laughing God examines how eight contemporary Native women poets in Canada and the United States - Joy Harjo, Louise Halfe, Kimberly Blaeser, Marilyn Dumont, Diane Glancy, Jeannette Armstrong, Wendy Rose, and Marie Annharte Baker - employ humour and irony to address the intricacies of race, gender, and nationality. While recognizing that humour and irony are often employed as methods of resistance, this careful analysis also acknowledges the ways that they can be used to assert or restore order.Using the framework of humour and irony, five themes emerge from the words of these poets: religious transformations; generic transformations; history, memory, and the nation; photography and representational visibility; and land and the significance of 'home.' Through the double-voice discourse of irony and the textual surprises of humour, these poets challenge hegemonic renderings of themselves and their cultures, even as they enforce their own cultural norms

Im Design ist die Einbeziehung der Kategorie Gender allerdings noch immer fast ein blinder Fleck. Das ist merkwürdig, weil Design ja den ganz gewöhnlichen Alltag überall und jederzeit bestimmt, und damit auch die in diesem Alltag handelnden Subjekte. Und diese Interaktion zwischen Menschen und Dingen findet unabdingbar "gendered" statt. Das vorliegende Buch setzt sich erstmals mit den essentiellen Fragen von Gender im Design theoretisch wie praktisch auseinander: Es erörtert die grundsätzliche Notwendigkeit der Einbeziehung von Gender in den Designprozess, und es stellt exemplarisch Design(forschungs)projekte zu diesem wichtigem Thema vor. Uta Brandes ist die erste Professorin, die explizit Gender & Design bis vor kurzem an der Köln International School of Design lehrte. Sie berät Unternehmen in Gender & Design-Fragen, ist Co-Gründerin und Vorsitzende des international Gender Design Network und betreut zahlreiche Projekte, insbesondere in Hong Kong, China und Japan

    Woman's voice and body are closely entwined in the Arabo-Islamic tradition, argues Fedwa Malti-Douglas in this pioneering book. Spanning the ninth through twentieth centuries and covering a wide range of texts—from courtly anectdote to mystical and philosophical treatises, from works of geography to autobiography—this study reveals how woman's access to literary speech has remained mediated through her body.Malti-Douglas first analyzes classical texts (both well-known works like The Thousand and One Nights and others still ignored in the West) in which the female voice, often associated with wit or trickery of a sexual nature, is subordinated to the male scriptor. Showing how early Arabo-Islamic discourse continues to influence contemporary Arabic writing, she maintains that today feminist writers of novels, short stories, and autobiography must work through this tradition, even if they subvert or reject it in the end. Whereas woman in the classical period speaks through the body, woman in the modern period often turns corporeality into a literary weapon to achieve power over discourse.Fedwa Malti-Douglas is Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature at the University of Texas, Austin.     Gender, Space, and Experience at the Renaissance Court investigates the dynamic relationships between gender and architectural space in Renaissance Italy. It examines the ceremonial use and artistic reception of the Palazzo Te from the arrival of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1530 to the Sack of Mantua in 1630. This book further proposes that we conceptualise the built environment as a performative space, a space formed by the gendered relationships and actors of its time, asserting that the Palazzo Te was constituted by the gendered behaviors of sixteenth-century courtiers, but it was not simply a passive receptor of gender performance. Through its multivalent form and ceremonial function, Maria F. Maurer argues that the palace was an active participant in the construction and perception of femininity and masculinity in the early modern court
