    Die jüngere Forschung zeigt, dass das Matthäusevangelium wesentlich durch die Schriften Israels und das eigene christusgläubige jüdische Profil geprägt ist. Auf dieser Basis untersucht Johannes Vortisch das Motiv des unschuldigen Blutes, welches in Mt 23,35; 27,4; 27,24f. gebraucht wird und sich ca. 25-mal in den Schriften Israels und in Zeugnissen des Frühjudentums findet. Die Einzelexegesen der zentralen Perikopen zeigen ein umfassendes intertextuelles Netz an Schriftbezügen auf und legen nahe, dass der mt Kreis auch die geschichtstheologischen Implikationen des Motivs aufgreift. Durch den Gebrauch des Motivs werden der Tod Jesu und die Tempelzerstörung 70 n.Chr. miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt. In diesem Deutungshorizont bekräftigt das Motiv nicht nur die Unschuld Jesu, sondern markiert auch die Gegner Jesu als Verantwortliche für die Kreuzigung und die Zerstörung Jerusalems. Only Matthew's Gospel refers back to the shedding of innocent blood repeatedly attested to in the Scriptures of Israel to interpret the death of Jesus. Johannes Vortisch shows that by using this motif the intertextual references suggest that the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD is understood as a punishment for the crucifixion of Jesus.

    Unter dem Motto »Doing Gender – Doing Religion« greift der Sammelband die in den Sozialwissenschaften seit etwa 30 Jahren lebhaft geführte Debatte über »Intersektionalität« von Unterdrückungsstrukturen auf: Die Rolle und Situation von Frauen ist nicht ohne Berücksichtigung anderer Faktoren wie etwa ihres Status und ihrer ethnischen Herkunft zu erfassen. Genderkonstruktionen und andere Parameter bedingen einander. Für die Kulturen der Antike ist dabei – so die Grundannahme der Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes – auch die religiöse Zugehörigkeit zu berücksichtigen. Im Zentrum der hier publizierten Intersektionalitätsanalysen steht daher die Frage, wie Geschlechterrollenkonzepte und religiöse Wertvorstellungen sich gegenseitig bedingen und beeinflussen. Grundsätzlichen Überlegungen zur Intersektionalitätsanalyse stehen Fallstudien zur Seite, welche die Verwobenheit von Genderkonstruktionen in frühjüdischen, neutestamentlichen und zeitgenössischen paganen Texten sowie solchen der Alten Kirche und des frühen Islam untersuchen. Die Beiträge behandeln unter anderem die Sicht auf interkulturelle Ehen und Geschlechtermoral im frühen Judentum, Christentum und Islam, auf Sklavinnen in religiöser Rechtsbildung im frühen Judentum und Christentum oder Maskulinitätskonzepte im Paganismus und im Neuen Testament. Der Sammelband belegt, dass die Frage nach den Wechselwirkungen von Genderkonzepten und religiösen Konstruktionen höchst produktiv ist, sich aber nicht isoliert von weiteren Kategorien, insbesondere den jeweiligen Statusmarkierungen analysieren lässt. Die Beobachtungen zur Vielfalt und Variabilität religiöser Konzepte und Geschlechterrollenvorstellungen legen nicht zuletzt deren Konstruktivität offen.InhaltsübersichtInhaltsübersicht: Ute E. The articles focus on the question of how gender role concepts and religious ideals are mutually dependent and influence each other. Fundamental articles on the analysis of intersectionality are followed by case studies on the entanglement of gender constructions in early Jewish, early Christian and contemporary pagan texts as well as those of the ancient church and early Islam. The question of the interdependence of gender concepts and religious constructions proves to be very.     "In this book von Wahlde provides an exploration of three distinct cultural and religious backgrounds against which scholars have frequently proposed that the Gospel and Letters of John are to be read and understood. von Wahlde examines each of these three possibilities in turn, and shows how they may be regarded as plausible or implausible depending upon the evidence available. von Wahlde shows that there are features within the Gospel and/or Letters of John that do in fact suggest that they were influenced either by Gnosticism, Docetism or one of the variant forms of Judaism. However, in each case, while some of the evidence suggests a particular background, von Wahlde shows that it is equally evident that not all of the evidence can be seen to suggest the same background. Through an examination of the origins and purpose of the gospel, and drawing on the conclusions of his well-regarded commentary on the Johannine literature, von Wahlde presents a new way of understanding the Gospel in its wider contexts."--Bloomsbury Publishing

    This book collects twenty two previously published essays and one new one by Erich S. Gruen who has written extensively on the literature and history of early Judaism and the experience of the Jews in the Greco-Roman world. His many articles on this subject have, however, appeared mostly in conference volumes and Festschriften, and have therefore not had wide circulation. By putting them together in a single work, this will bring the essays to the attention of a much broader scholarly readership and make them more readily available to students in the fields of ancient history and early Judaism. The pieces are quite varied, but develop a number of connected and related themes: Jewish identity in the pagan world, the literary representations by Jews and pagans of one another, the interconnections of Hellenism and Judaism, and the Jewish experience under Hellenistic monarchies and the Roman empire
