On Taungurung Land: Sharing History and Culture is the first monograph to examine how the Taungurung Nation of central Victoria negotiated with protectors and pastoralists to retain possession of their own country for as long as possible. Historic accounts, to date, have treated the histories of Acheron and Mohican Aboriginal stations as preliminary to the establishment of the more famous Coranderrk on Wurundjeri land. Instead of 'rushing down the hill' to Coranderrk, this book concentrates upon the two foundational Aboriginal stations on Taungurung Country. A collaboration between Elder Uncle Roy Patterson and Jennifer Jones, the book draws upon Taungurung oral knowledge and an unusually rich historical record. This fine-grained local history and cultural memoir shows that adaptation to white settlement and the preservation of culture were not mutually exclusive. Uncle Roy shares generational knowledge in this book in order to revitalise relationships to place and establish respect and mutual practices of care for Country.

Addressing academic and general readers, this volume provides interpretations of major Canadian novels in English published during the last twenty years. Comprising a wide range of topics and genres, including writing by recent immigrants and by First Nations authors as well as speculative fiction on global future(s), these novels testify to the richness, vitality and diversity of contemporary Anglo-Canadian writing. The twenty-five essays by established and emerging scholars in the field show how contemporary Canadian novels in English have reflected transformations in Canadian society since the turn of the millennia. In particular, they reappraise the cultural diversity which is central to an understanding of contemporary Canadian writing. The volume thus investigates the ongoing formation of a specifically Canadian form of multiculturalism and of Canadian cultural sensibilities as acted out in literature.

There are 1.8 million Indigenous people in Canada, accounting for five percent of the total population. They speak more than seventy languages and represent many different cultures. With recent land claims and the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools, the situation of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis has gained critical attention. Teaching Indigenous Studies, however, is a difficult endeavor, as educators must be knowledgeable and sensitive about Indigenous histories, cultures, traditions, and political issues. Incorporating the latest research in anthropology, ethnography, history, literary and film studies, the chapters in this book focus on current matters such as traditional ways of life, land claims, and self-government, trace cultural changes that resulted from contacts with the Europeans, and discuss the process of reconciliation. Referring to Indigenous perspective in the analysis of cultures and the teaching of these issues, the authors have included many Indigenous voices and sources, and explore the institutions that provide Indigenous communities in Canada with national and international visibility.
