Introduction /Tom Hanks --Mapping the moon /Beth Saunders --Daydreams by moonlight /Mia Fineman --Moonshot /Mia Fineman --Art after Apollo /Beth Saunders --Works in the exhibition. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, Apollo's Muse honors the rich history of photographic representations of the moon, from rarely seen early daguerreotypes to contemporary video art. Engaging and accessible, the book explores how photographers captured this celestial body-and how the images have in turn inspired artists, writers, and scientists. The book's wide-ranging focus includes extraordinary reproductions of the first successful series of lunar daguerreotypes by the American photographer John Adams Whipple, along with film stills from Voyage dans la Lune (1902) by Georges Melies; American "paper moon" studio portraits; images from the Apollo mission; and works by contemporary artists, including Vija Celmins, Roy Lichtenstein, Aleksandra Mir, Vik Muniz, Nam June Paik, and Robert Rauschenberg. Related prints, drawings, paintings, and astronomical instruments explore artists' fascination with the moon, as an object of both art and science. A foreword by actor Tom Hanks, star of the award-winning 1995 film Apollo 13, outlines the importance of lunar images to art and cinema, reinforcing the universal fascination with representations of the cosmos. On March 13, 2020 when the global coronavirus pandemic brought life as we know it to an abrupt halt, the International Center of Photography, just weeks after opening in a brand-new building on Manhattan's Lower East Side that was buzzing with visitors, was forced to close its doors. Wanting to do more than virtual exhibition tours, ICP announced the #ICPConcerned open call on March 20th, an invitation for people to make, upload, and tag images on Instagram of whatever was going on in their lives wherever they were. What resulted was more than sixty thousand submissions from countries as far flung as France, Singapore, Argentina, Nigeria, Canada, and Iran. From the halls of medical facilities to eerily empty streets and domestic settings converted into home offices and classrooms, the more than 800 photographs collected here are organized chronologically and accompanied by headlines gathered from various global news entities. Taken together, these words and pictures represent the pain, heartbreak, hope, and occasional humor we've all experienced this past year against the backdrop of COVID-19, unrelenting racial injustice, and a divisive political climate. Exhibition: ICP International Center for Photography, New York, USA (01.10.2020 - 03.01.2021)

"Between 1990 and 1998, Guido Guidi made five separate trips to Milan and its surrounding areas. Cinque viaggi brings together the photographs made there, forming an investigation of one city and its peripheries in the throes of economic and social transformation. As Guidi follows the canal from out in the suburbs toward the city centre, his attention and visual language move from the vernacular to the metropolitan, from wider horizontal views to vertical 'cuts' in the urban fabric, from entire buildings and scenes to glimpsed façades and doorways. Along the way, we also encounter inhabitants: a group of young men gathered in a Pasolini-like scene on a bridge in the city's outskirts; occasional passers-by working, shopping, or stopping to smoke on the city streets; disconnected couples and disparate individuals whose loose citizenship coheres the urban sprawl."--

"Thoughtfully illustrated, this volume highlights a selection of photographs of African American family life between the 1970s and the early 2000s--pictures that were lost by their original owners and then found by the artist Zun Lee on a street in Detroit in 2012, marking the beginning of the Fade Resistance collection of more than 4,000 Polaroids. Lee describes the collection as an important record of Black visual self-representation and a means to "reflect the way Black people saw themselves on their terms--without the intention of being seen, or judged, by others." To Lee, these powerful photographs are an expression of "Black life mattering." These vivid images chronicle milestones such as weddings, birthdays and graduations, as well as quiet daily moments, offering contemporary views long ignored or erased by mainstream culture. Together, these works highlight the role snapshots have played in Black life, as tools to challenge stereotypical portrayals and as a means to memorialize family, culture and heritage. Topics such as self-representation, visual history and the social power of photographs are addressed in critical texts by Sophie Hackett, Stefano Harney, Zun Lee and Fred Moten, and an original contribution by celebrated poet Dawn Lundy Martin."--

Founded by Don Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1538 in the beautiful Valle de los Alcázares, a town with the name of Santafé de Bogotá was to become the capital of the kingdom and the Viceroyalty of New Granada, and later of the Republic of Colombia. On the occasion of the 4th centenary in 1938, an official map of the city was made, based on the first flights equipped for taking aerial photographs, bills and coins were issued and medals were cast that recalled the four centuries of existence of the city. In 2018 and as part of the commemoration of the 480th anniversary of the capital, the District Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Museum of Bogotá organized an exhibition to reflect on how such an important event in the history of a city was celebrated

This beguiling pictorial work focuses our gaze on the history of gender from a surprizing angle. Even if the visual culture of the start of the 20th century bolstered ideas of timeless womanhood and proper men, the postcards and photographs of the day also embraced some astonishing curiosities. Smooching male couples, lesbian kisses, boys posing in skirts ? this volume gives the queer world its own pictorial Kalevala. A hundred years ago, gender was not just a straitjacket, but also a carnival of possibilities and a playground of impossibilities. The researcher Harri Kalha's insightful pictorial archaeology jubilantly brings a breath of fresh air to both gender norms and our conceptions of the world of the beginning of the last century. This cultural history is common to all of us ? who among us is not touched by gender? Exhibition: HAM Helsinki Art Museum, Finland (01.11.2019-27.9.2020)

For more than 50 years, Dico Kremer has photographed people. His attentive and always sensitive eye on the record of spontaneous reactions captured thousands of images of anonymous visitors to the Oscar Niemeyer Museum between March 2016 and November 2019. Many striking moments of special and unique moments, such as the impression of someone appreciating a certain work of art, were immortalized by his camera.Curated by Professor Fernando Bini, 84 photos were selected from more than 5,000 records and were transformed into the exhibition Gente no MONʺ (People at MON), a realization of the Museumu. Dico can be considered a natural observer of people. Always attentive to the arts, in the many years he lived in Europe, being a frequent visitor to the main museums in several countries, he felt interest in the reaction of visitors to the works. There began the conception of the exhibition that was carried out at MON. Mário Frederico Medeiros Kremer, also known as Dico Kremer, is a professional photographer specialized in commercial and marketing pictures that demand an elevated technical quality therewith and therefore, he traveled a lot and worked in several countries besides Brazil. He lives in Portugal.
