    Challenging clichés of Japanism as a feminine taste, Bachelor Japanists argues that Japanese aesthetics were central to contests over the meanings of masculinity in the West. Christopher Reed draws attention to the queerness of Japanist communities of writers, collectors, curators, and artists in the tumultuous century between the 1860s and the 1960s.Reed combines extensive archival research; analysis of art, architecture, and literature; the insights of queer theory; and an appreciation of irony to explore the East-West encounter through three revealing artistic milieus: the Goncourt brothers and other japonistes of late-nineteenth-century Paris; collectors and curators in turn-of-the-century Boston; and the mid-twentieth-century circles of artists associated with Seattle's Mark Tobey. The result is a groundbreaking integration of well-known and forgotten episodes and personalities that illuminates how Japanese aesthetics were used to challenge Western gender conventions. These disruptive effects are sustained in Reed's analysis, which undermines conventional scholarly investments in the heroism of avant-garde accomplishment and ideals of cultural authenticity

    "The End of the West is an interdisciplinary work that broaches the problem of Western ethnocentrism in contemporary social and political theory. More specifically, this book critically addresses what has recently been called the 'end' of the West in many contemporary public discourses. Meighoo argues that although this claim might appear to challenge the teleological conception implied in 'the West,' it only entrenches this concept further insofar as it presumes that there is a 'West' to begin with. This teleological concept of the West is based on the idea of a continuous tradition extending all the way from ancient Greece to modern Europe and its colonial settlements, a tradition that is distinguished from all non-Western traditions by its guiding principles of reason, progress, and freedom--a tradition, however, that is finally approaching its end, for better or worse. What the author is arguing, then, is that even the most anti-ethnocentric discourses on the end of the West continue to rely on the intrinsically ethnocentric concept of the West itself. The book thus promises to make a substantial contribution as well as a timely intervention into the academic fields of postcolonial theory, continental philosophy, cultural studies, and the history of ideas. The fields of postcolonial theory and continental philosophy in particular have been marked by a radical interrogation of Western ethnocentrism, racism, and colonialism. The book offers a critique not only of teleology but also of 'negative teleology.'     Asiaten beteiligten sich im 19. Jahrhundert in vielen Bereichen an innereuropäischen Debatten über Moderne und Dekadenz, ausgetragen auf so unterschiedlichen Feldern wie den Wissenschaften, aber auch in Kunst und Religion. Schon vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg war die Verunsicherung der Europäer mit Händen zu greifen, Debatten um die Dekadenz der westlichen Kultur nahmen zu. Das Buch fragt danach, welche Rolle Asiaten in diesem Prozess spielten und an welchen kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Debatten sie sich beteiligten. Es untersucht beispielsweise, was sie zur künstlerischen Moderne (wie dem Impressionismus) beitrugen, aber auch, welche Rolle der zunehmende Rassismus für sie spielte. Die untersuchten Beiträge reichen dabei von Club-Gesprächen über Zeitungsartikel hin zu Fachartikeln. „Insgesamt ein Buch mit vermeidbaren kleineren Schwächen in der Titelgebung, jedoch mit profund recherchierten Ausführungen darüber, wie Japaner, Inder und Chinesen England und Deutschland sahen, welche "Begegnungen" sie dort hatten und wie der Ferne Osten Europa auf den Gebieten der Kunst, Wissenschaft und Religion beeinflusste und Europa zunehmend zuerst in seinem Selbstverständnis, überall überlegen zu sein, erschütterte, zuerst auf zivilisatorischem und dann auch auf dem genuin technisch-wissenschaftlichen Gebiet. Ein Buch, von dem man sich wünscht, dass es ein Anstoß sein möge für weiterführende Arbeiten zum Thema globalhistorische Kulturgeschichte Asiens und Europas im Vergleich.     Challenging clichés of Japanism as a feminine taste, Bachelor Japanists argues that Japanese aesthetics were central to contests over the meanings of masculinity in the West. Christopher Reed draws attention to the queerness of Japanist communities of writers, collectors, curators, and artists in the tumultuous century between the 1860s and the 1960s.Reed combines extensive archival research; analysis of art, architecture, and literature; the insights of queer theory; and an appreciation of irony to explore the East-West encounter through three revealing artistic milieus: the Goncourt brothers and other japonistes of late-nineteenth-century Paris; collectors and curators in turn-of-the-century Boston; and the mid-twentieth-century circles of artists associated with Seattle's Mark Tobey. The result is a groundbreaking integration of well-known and forgotten episodes and personalities that illuminates how Japanese aesthetics were used to challenge Western gender conventions. These disruptive effects are sustained in Reed's analysis, which undermines conventional scholarly investments in the heroism of avant-garde accomplishment and ideals of cultural authenticity

    "Il est difficile aujourd'hui de parler de l'orientalisme sans évoquer la "querelle" dont il est l'objet depuis que Edward Said proclama que l'Orient dont s'occupent les orientalistes est une fabrication de l'Occident. Les contributeurs du présent volume entendent pourtant se situer en dehors ou au-delà de cette querelle. Pour ce faire, ils ont notamment porté leur regard sur ce que l'on peut nommer des "objets viatiques". Ceux-ci rendent bien compte d'interactions qui ne sont nullement à sens unique, ou déterminés uniquement par un rapport de domination. Du choc esthétique que constitua pour Delacroix la musique judéo-arabe, à l'histoire d'un manuel d'érotologie mystérieusement traduit dans l'Algérie coloniale, en passant par la constitution du mythe touareg ou l'influence du tourisme sur l'artisanat marocain contemporain, le lecteur curieux et méfiant à l'égard des simplifications trouvera ici un ensemble d'études illustrant la diversité des approches dans un champ du savoir toujours fécond. Nous y retrouverons aussi l'inspiration de François Pouillon, pour qui ce volume a été composé. Animant depuis de nombreuses années un séminaire de l'EHESS, il n'a jamais hésité à aborder des sujets parfois décalés. Ce sont par exemple la biographie du peintre Étienne Dinet, qui mourut musulman dans l'oasis de Bou-Saada, les textes de l'Émir Abd-El-Kader sur le cheval arabe, ou les enjeux anthropologiques des formules de salutation. En même temps que ce volume qui lui est dédié, les éditions Karthala publieront prochainement un recueil de ses recherches consacrées au monde bédouin."--Page 4 of cover
