    Fiction has a major social impact, not least because it co-shapes the image that society has of various social groups. Drawing on a collection of 170 contemporary Dutch-language novels, 'Character Constellations' presents a range of data-driven, statistical models to study depictions of characters in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality, and other identity categories. Incorporating the tools of network analysis, each chapter highlights an aspect of fictional social networks that affects the representation of social groups: their centrality, their communities, and their conflicts. While reading individual novels in light of emerging statistical patterns, combining the formal methods of social network analysis with the interpretive tools of narratology, this study shows how central societal themes such as (in)equality and emancipation, integration and segregation, and social mobility and class struggle are foregrounded, replicated, or distorted in the Dutch novel.0Showcasing what character-based critiques of literary representation gain by integrating data-driven methods into the practice of critical close reading, 'Character Constellations' contributes to societal debates on cultural representation and identity and the role fiction and art have in those debates

    The tenth volume of the Lage Landen Studies explores the road of an original Dutch-language book from its original version to the translation that arrives into the hands of a non-native reader. This collection of research articles features literary translations with Dutch as source language. The authors pay special attention to production-specific aspects of the literary transfer process: What are the conditions to make a translation? Who is involved in the process? What part do translators and institutions play? Which norms determine the production and distribution of translated texts? In their contributions on transfer to the German, English, French, Indonesian, Russian and Czech language, the authors mention different aspects that are mainly new to the cultural transfer of Dutch-language literature abroad and/or give new impulses to its research. Tussen twee stoelen, tussen twee vuren. Nederlandse literatuur op weg naar de buitenlandse lezer besteedt aandacht aan de verschillende fasen en aspecten van het parcours dat een Nederlandstalig boek doorloopt vanaf de originele versie tot zijn aankomst bij een anderstalige lezer. Daarbij staan literaire vertalingen centraal met Nederlands als brontaal. Van de drie elementen van het transferparcours – selectie, transport en receptie – gaat de aandacht in het bijzonder uit naar kwesties die met de productiezijde van het literaire transferproces te maken hebben. Vragen die daarbij een rol spelen zijn onder andere: onder welke voorwaarden komt een vertaling tot stand? Wie zijn daar allemaal bij betrokken? Welke rollen spelen vertalers en instituties daarbij? Welke normen bepalen de productie en verspreiding van vertaalde teksten? In de bijdragen over transfer naar het Duits, Engels, Frans, Indonesisch, Russisch en Tsjechisch komen uiteenlopende aspecten ter sprake die in het onderzoek naar cultural transfer grotendeels nieuw zijn en/of belangrijke impulsen geven aan bestaand onderzoek naar de transfer van Nederlandstalige literatuur naar het buitenland.

    World War II in Contemporary German and Dutch Fiction: The Generation of Meta-Memory offers a comparative study of the construction of World War II memory in contemporary German, Flemish, and Dutch literature. More specifically, it investigates in what ways the large temporal distance to the historical events has impacted how literary writers from these three literatures have negotiated its meaning and form during the last decades. To that end, this book offers analyses of nine novels that demonstrate a pronounced reflexivity on the conditions of contemporary remembering. Rather than a dig for historical truth or a struggle with historical trauma, these novels reflect on the transmission, the narrative shapes, the formation processes, and the functions of World War II memory today, while asserting a self-conscious and often irreverent approach toward established mnemonic routines, practices, and rules. As the analyses show, this approach is equally articulated through the novels’ poetics, which are marked by a large formal diversity and a playfulness that highlights mnemonic agency, a posttraumatic positioning, and the ascendency of the literary over the historiographical. Based on these findings, this book proposes the emergence of a new paradigm within the postwar cultural assessment of World War II: the generation of meta-memory. "This book addresses how contemporary prose fiction from Germany, Flanders, and the Netherlands deals with the memory of World War II. More in particular, it offers an investigation of how the temporal distance to the war events affects matters of form and content in these contemporary narratives"--

    This book is about the presence of music in novels. More specifically, it is about music in the early modern novel, with an emphasis on seventeenth-century musical prose from The Netherlands. The essay provides a concise and an accessible introduction into the subject and presents an overview of this compelling and fascinating new research area. In recent years the interest in this subject has substantially increased both among literary critics-who coined a special term for the phenomenon and speak of 'music novels'-and academics, who started doing systematic and in-depth musico-literary research. Initially, the research was focused mainly on the influence of music in novels from the period around 1900, the works by modernist writers like Thomas Mann, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Later, also the novelistic oeuvre of twentieth- and twenty-first-century 'musical' authors like Milan Kundera, Simon Vestdijk and Toni Morrison became subject of study. It is remarkable that up until now the presence of musical elements in prose works from earlier centuries received almost no attention from academic researchers. This essay wants to contribute to filling this lacuna. The book offers the reader an impression and overview of this intriguing interdisciplinary field. First, it presents an exploration of the role and function of musical elements in seventeenth-century Dutch prose fiction. Many examples from primary literature are discussed and are consistently considered in the light of contemporary European developments. Secondly, the publication serves as an introduction to a fascinating new research area, that is at an international level, too, virtually unexplored. This makes it the first transnational study devoted to musical practices in the Golden Age novel. Accordingly, the text investigates several options for future research.

    This Element sheds a new light on the ubiquitous yet complex notion of mimesis. By systematically comparing the social dynamics of the Dutch population at a given time with the social dynamics of characters in Dutch literary fiction published in the same period, it aims to pinpoint the ways in and the extent with which literary fiction either mirrors or shapes the societal context from which it emerged. While close-reading-based scholarship on this topic has been limited to qualitative interpretations of allegedly exemplary works, the present study uses the data-driven tools of social network analysis to systematically determine the imitative elements of the social dynamics of characters within larger-scale, representative collections of books of literary fiction.

    This book is about the presence of music in novels. More specifically, it is about music in the early modern novel, with an emphasis on seventeenth-century musical prose from The Netherlands. The essay provides a concise and an accessible introduction into the subject and presents an overview of this compelling and fascinating new research area. In recent years the interest in this subject has substantially increased both among literary critics-who coined a special term for the phenomenon and speak of 'music novels'-and academics, who started doing systematic and in-depth musico-literary research. Initially, the research was focused mainly on the influence of music in novels from the period around 1900, the works by modernist writers like Thomas Mann, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Later, also the novelistic oeuvre of twentieth- and twenty-first-century 'musical' authors like Milan Kundera, Simon Vestdijk and Toni Morrison became subject of study. It is remarkable that up until now the presence of musical elements in prose works from earlier centuries received almost no attention from academic researchers. This essay wants to contribute to filling this lacuna. The book offers the reader an impression and overview of this intriguing interdisciplinary field. First, it presents an exploration of the role and function of musical elements in seventeenth-century Dutch prose fiction. Many examples from primary literature are discussed and are consistently considered in the light of contemporary European developments. Secondly, the publication serves as an introduction to a fascinating new research area, that is at an international level, too, virtually unexplored. This makes it the first transnational study devoted to musical practices in the Golden Age novel. Accordingly, the text investigates several options for future research.

    Fiction has a major social impact, not least because it co-shapes the image that society has of various social groups. Drawing on a collection of 170 contemporary Dutch-language novels, 'Character Constellations' presents a range of data-driven, statistical models to study depictions of characters in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality, and other identity categories. Incorporating the tools of network analysis, each chapter highlights an aspect of fictional social networks that affects the representation of social groups: their centrality, their communities, and their conflicts. While reading individual novels in light of emerging statistical patterns, combining the formal methods of social network analysis with the interpretive tools of narratology, this study shows how central societal themes such as (in)equality and emancipation, integration and segregation, and social mobility and class struggle are foregrounded, replicated, or distorted in the Dutch novel.0Showcasing what character-based critiques of literary representation gain by integrating data-driven methods into the practice of critical close reading, 'Character Constellations' contributes to societal debates on cultural representation and identity and the role fiction and art have in those debates
