Drawing on feminist cultural materialist theories and historiographies, 'Treading the bawds' analyses the collaboration between actresses Elizabeth Barry and Anne Bracegirdle and women playwrights such as Aphra Behn and Mary Pix, and traces a line of influence from the time of the first theatres royal to the rebellion that resulted in the creation of a player's co-operative. Bush-Bailey offers a fresh approach to the history of women, seeing their neglected plays in the context of performance. By combining detailed analysis of selected plays within the broader context of a playhouse managed by its leading actresses, Bush-Bailey challenges the received historical and literary canons, including a radical solution to the mysterious identity of the anonymous playwright 'Ariadne'. It is a story of female collaboration and influence with the spotlight focused on the very public world of women in the commercial business of theatre.

"From history and politics to fantasy and farce, the first flourish of women’s theatre in Canada questioned and critiqued the discourses that formed and informed ideas of gender, sex, and sexuality. While still seduced by an abiding belief in the truth of separate spheres that mark out the hierarchies of men’s and women’s roles, these plays, in a variety of genres, challenged conventional notions of the private and public in the service of women’s rights and social reform. Blowing up the Skirt of History revives ten theatrical comedies that staged the promise of social change, empowered a counterpublic of politically vocal and socially powerful women’s voices, and put women’s artistic work and lives in the spotlight. When middle- and upper-class women participated in the theatre – as audience members, as playwrights, and as producers – they in turn signalled its authenticity and acceptability. Informed by feminist materialism and public sphere theory as categories of reclamation and analysis, the book’s general introduction situates the plays in Canadian women’s history, politics, ideologies of gender, theatrical modernism, colonialism, and a newly industrializing nation. Introductions to each work explore the playwrights’ biographies, their political activity, and their literary output. Additionally they recount each play’s production history and historicize the ways in which it intervenes in the ideologies of the age. Blowing up the Skirt of History reconstructs a long-overlooked corpus of early dramatic writing and restores it to Canadian theatrical history. These plays, and others like them, are exemplars of the types of theatre that became increasingly appropriate to and supportive of middle- and upper-class Anglo-Canadian women’s culture over the turn of the twentieth century."--

"Contemporary European Playwrights presents and discusses a range of key writers that have radically reshaped European theatre by finding new ways to express the changing nature of the continent's society and culture, and whose work is still in dialogue with Europe today. Traversing borders and languages, this volume offers a fresh approach to analyzing plays in production by some of the most widely-performed European playwrights, assessing how their work has revealed new meanings and theatrical possibilities as they move across the continent, building an unprecedented picture of the contemporary European repertoire. With chapters by leading scholars and contributions by the writers themselves, the chapters bring playwrights together to examine their work as part of a network and genealogy of writing, examining how these plays embody and interrogate the nature of contemporary Europe. Written for students and scholars of European theatre and playwriting, this book will leave the reader with an understanding of the shifting relationships between the subsidized and commercial, the alternative and the mainstream stage, and political stakes of playmaking in European theatre since 1989"--

"Despite a recent increase in productivity amongst Indigenous playwrights in Canada, most critical and academic attention has been devoted to the work of male dramatists. This is seemingly due to the expediency with which such renowned writers/dramatists as Cree playwright Tomson Highway and Ojibwa writer Drew Hayden Taylor achieved fame. Grounded in a historical, socio-cultural consideration of Indigenous women's theatrical production and reception and addressing this critical gap in the literature pertaining to Indigenous theatre in North America, my book focuses specifically on plays by Indigenous women written and produced in the socio-cultural milieux of twentieth and twenty-first century Canada. Closely analyzing dramatic texts by Monique Mojica (Kuna/Rappahannock), Marie Clements (Cree/Métis), and Yvette Nolan (Algonquin/Irish), my book explores representations of gendered colonialist violence in order to determine the varying ways in which these representations are employed subversively and informatively by Indigenous women. These plays provide an avenue for individual and potential cultural healing by deconstructing some of the harmful ideological work performed by colonial misrepresentations of Indigeneity, demonstrating the strength and persistence of Indigenous women, and thereby offering a rupturing space in which decolonial futurisms can be envisioned. The female playwrights who are the focus of my book counter colonial and occasionally postcolonial representations of gendered and racialized violence by emphasizing female resistance, collective coalition, and survival. Engaging with both literary and performance theory, including (though not limited to) the work of Jo-Ann Episkenew (Métis), Allison Hargreaves, Barbara Godard, Ric Knowles, Susan Bennett, Janice Acoose (Salteaux), and Monique Mojica herself, my book argues that dramatic texts and performances deploy a decolonizing aesthetic that can redefine dramatic/literary and, ultimately, socio-cultural, political space for resistant and decolonial ends. Informed by Indigenous and feminist poststructuralist and postcolonial theoretical perspectives that address the production and dissemination of racialized and gendered regimes of representation, including the work of Sherene Razack, Quo Li Driskill (Cherokee), Sara Ahmed, Emma Pérez, Chela Sandoval, Gayatri Spivak, and Chandra Talpade Mohanty, my text suggests that colonialist misrepresentations of Indigenous women have served to perpetuate demeaning stereotypes, justifying devaluation of and violence against Indigenous women.

Mythmaking: definitions and meanings -- Plays by women on female writers -- Plays by women on literary characters

This study explores the process of mythmaking in plays written by women. By writing the lives of female writers and rewriting the literary characters, which have been created by male writers, women playwrights assume the role of a mythmaker. This study evaluates the constantly developing process of women's mythmaking/mythbreaking in Liz Lochhead's Blood and Ice, Rose Leiman Goldemberg's Letters Home, Bilgesu Erenus' Halide, Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Love of the Nightingale, Bryony Lavery's Ophelia, and Zeynep Avci's Gilgamesh

In Gender, Theatre and the Origins of Criticism, which was originally published in 2003, Marcie Frank explores the theoretical and literary legacy of John Dryden to a number of prominent women writers of the time. Frank examines the pre-eminence of gender, sexuality and the theatre in Dryden's critical texts that are predominantly rewritings of the work of his own literary precursors - Ben Jonson, Shakespeare and Milton. She proposes that Dryden develops a native literary tradition that is passed on as an inheritance to his heirs - Aphra Behn, Catharine Trotter, and Delarivier Manley - as well as their male contemporaries. Frank describes the development of criticism in the transition from a court-sponsored theatrical culture to one oriented toward a consuming public, with very different attitudes to gender and sexuality. This study also sets out to trace the historical origins of certain aspects of current criticism - the practices of paraphrase, critical self-consciousness and performativity

The book is about the representation of war in the plays of Anne Devlin, Marie Jones and Christina Reid. Cumulatively, the plays demonstrate a symbiotic relationship between war and gender, showing women?s response to war as complex and diverse. The work of these three playwrights suggests that women played a much bigger part in the conflict and in the post-conflict environment than has been acknowledged
