We live in an increasingly violent world. From suicide terrorists to serial killers, violent subjects challenge our imaginations. We seek answers to our questions on this subject in literature, cinema, and electronic media. In Bloodscripts, Elana Gomel examines how popular culture narratives construct violent subjectivity. Using such various narratives as mystery, horror, detective, and fantasy fiction as well as accounts of the atrocities perpetuated by serial killers and the Holocaust, Bloodscripts offers a new map of the genres of violence and links the twin obsessions of postmodern culture: crime and genocide. Bloodscripts is a stimulating, original, and accessible account of the narrative construction of the violent subject. It proposes a narrative model that will be of interest to literary critics, cultural scholars, criminologists, and anyone trying to understand the role of violence in postmodern culture.

In Advancing Democracy Abroad, McFaul explains how democracy provides a more accountable system of government, greater economic prosperity, and better security compared with other systems of government. He then shows how Americans have benefited from the advance of democracy abroad in the past, and speculates about security, economic, and moral benefits for the United States from potential democratic gains around the world.

Roy Grace, creation of the award-winning author Peter James, unearths a powerful criminal network in Find Them Dead. A Brighton gangster is on trial for conspiracy to murder, following the death of a rival crime family boss. As the jury file into Lewes Crown Court, twelve anonymous people selected randomly from fifty, there is one person sitting in the public gallery observing them with keen interest, and secretly filming them. Later, a group of the accused's henchmen sit around a table with the full personal details of each of the twelve jurors in front of them. They need to influence two of them - a jury can convict if directed on a 10-2 majority verdict but no less. But which two? When Roy Grace is called in to investigate a murder that has links to the accused and the trial, and the suspicion that an attempt has been made to intimidate jurors, he finds the reach and power of the accused's tentacles go higher than he had ever imagined

*** A BRAND NEW NOVEL FROM THE MASTER OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE *** 'So,' said Mora Piozzi, her lawyer, looking down at her laptop. 'In brief: you are charged with the murder of Stuart Robert Rees, on December 21st, between the hours of ten-forty in the morning and half-past three o'clock in the afternoon.' Tabitha is accused of murder. She is in prison awaiting trial. There is a strong case against her, and she can't remember what happened on December 21st. She is alone, frightened and confused. But somehow, from the confines of her cell, she needs to prove everyone wrong. House of Correction is beautifully written, clever, shocking, twisty, so believable and utterly compelling. This is another stunningly brilliant novel to relish from Nicci French. Praise for The Lying Room 'Confirms Nicci French as the giant of the genre, upon whose shoulders other writers stand' Erin Kelly 'It's Nicci French perfection - which, as we all know, is the best kind of perfection. So, so gripping and brilliantly clued' Sophie Hannah 'Reasserts Nicci French as the master of duplicity, suspense and sleight of hand' Sam Baker 'From the very first page, Nicci French remains one step ahead of us. Expertly paced, psychologically sharp, thoroughly enjoyable' Louise Candlish 'You know a book's gripping when you sneak away at any opportunity to read it. Meticulously plotted, psychologically astute' Sarah Vaughan 'A pure adrenaline rush!' Jenny Colgan 'A multi-layered plot that keeps you guessing until the final page' Jane Corry

"Courtroom drama, legal thrillers, and the classic whodunit are a few sub-genres of the widely popular crime fiction genre. Despite the popularity among readers, the crime short story genre has yet to be fully explored by scholars. This book offers a deep-dive into crime short stories written by a wide range of authors. In ten chapters of the history of the crime short story genre, readers will learn how the genre has evolved to become what it is today. The book offers an accessible and original discussion of crime short stories focusing on compelling themes, ranging from miscarriage of justice to environmental crime and toxic masculinity"--
