    Der Spatial Turn und seine Folgen: Vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Grundlagen der Wende zum Raum zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts arbeitet Stephan Günzel die maßgeblichen Verwerfungslinien der gegenwärtigen Debatte heraus und dekliniert die verschiedenen Aspekte der Verräumlichung am Beispiel von Henri Lefebvres Theorie sozialer Hervorbringung systematisch durch.Die Abgrenzung einzelner Varianten des Spatial Turn lässt die jeweils fachspezifischen Interessen am Raum deutlich werden und ermöglicht einen übergreifenden Vorschlag zu dessen methodischer Untersuchung anhand topologischer Strukturen. Der Band gibt nicht nur einen systematischen Überblick über den Spatial Turn, sondern stellt darüber hinaus die Raumtheorien von Ratzel, Simmel, Lewin, Heidegger, McLuhan, Levinas, Foucault, Spencer Brown, Bourdieu, Deleuze, de Certeau und anderen vor.     The interdisciplinary volume offers methodologically innovative approaches to Austria's coping with issues of migration past and present. These essays show Austria's long history as a migration country. Austrians themselves have been on the move for the past 150 years to find new homes and build better lives. After the World War II the economy improved and prosperity set in, so Austrians tended to stay at home. Austria's growing prosperity made the country attractive to immigrants. After the war, tens of thousands of "ethnic Germans" expelled from Eastern Europe settled in Austria. Starting in the 1950s "victims of the Cold War" (Hungary, Czechs and Slovaks) began looking for political asylum in Austria. Since the 1960s Austria has been recruiting a growing number of "guest workers" from Turkey and Yugoslavia to make up the labor missing in the industrial and service economies. Recently, refugees from the arc of crisis from Afghanistan to Syria to Somalia have braved perilous journeys to build new lives in a more peaceful and prosperous Europe. Der interdisziplinäre Band bietet methodisch neue Ansätze zum Thema Migration in Österreich. Die Aufsätze geben Einblick in Österreichs lange Geschichte als Migrationsland. Die Österreicher waren selbst über 150 Jahre lang auf der Suche nach einer neuen Heimat und einem besseren Leben. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verbesserte sich die Wirtschaft und der Wohlstand setzte ein, sodass die Österreicher dazu neigten, im eigenen Land zu bleiben. Und Österreichs wachsender Wohlstand machte das Land für Immigranten attraktiv. Nach dem Krieg haben sich Zehntausende von „Volksdeutschen“ in Österreich niedergelassen, die aus Osteuropa vertrieben wurden. In den 1950er Jahren begannen die „Opfer des Kalten Krieges“ (Ungarn, Tschechen und Slowaken) in Österreich um politisches Asyl anzusuchen. Um die im Dienstleistungs- und Industriebereich fehlenden Arbeiter zu ersetzen, rekrutierte Österreich seit den 1960er Jahren eine wachsende Zahl von „Gastarbeitern“ aus der Türkei und Jugoslawien. In jüngster Zeit nehmen Flüchtlinge aus den Krisengebieten von Afghanistan, Syrien und Somalia gefährliche Routen, um sich ein neues Leben in einem friedlichen und wohlhabenden Europa aufzubauen.

    Spectacle 2.0 recasts Debord's theory of spectacle within the frame of 21st century digital capitalism. It offers a reassessment of Debord’s original notion of Spectacle from the late 1960s, of its posterior revisitation in the 1990s, and it presents a reinterpretation of the concept within the scenario of contemporary informational capitalism and more specifically of digital and media labour. It is argued that the Spectacle 2.0 form operates as the interactive network that links through one singular (but contradictory) language and various imaginaries, uniting diverse productive contexts such as logistics, finance, new media and urbanism. Spectacle 2.0 thus colonizes most spheres of social life by processes of commodification, exploitation and reification. Diverse contributors consider the topic within the book’s two main sections: Part I conceptualizes and historicizes the Spectacle in the context of informational capitalism; contributions in Part II offer empirical cases that historicise the Spectacle in relation to the present (and recent past) showing how a Spectacle 2.0 approach can illuminate and deconstruct specific aspects of contemporary social reality. All contributions included in this book rework the category of the Spectacle to present a stimulating compendium of theoretical critical literature in the fields of media and labour studies.     "Why has the zombie become such a pervasive figure in twenty-first-century popular culture? John Vervaeke, Christopher Mastropietro and Filip Miscevic seek to answer this question by arguing that particular aspects of the zombie, common to a variety of media forms, reflect a crisis in modern Western culture. The authors examine the essential features of the zombie, including mindlessness, ugliness and homelessness, and argue that these reflect the outlook of the contemporary West and its attendant zeitgeists of anxiety, alienation, disconnection and disenfranchisement. They trace the relationship between zombies and the theme of secular apocalypse, demonstrating that the zombie draws its power from being a perversion of the Christian mythos of death and resurrection. Symbolic of a lost Christian worldview, the zombie represents a world that can no longer explain itself, nor provide us with instructions for how to live within it.

    The concept of 'domicide' or the destruction of home is developed to describe the modern crisis of meaning that the zombie both represents and reflects. This is illustrated using case studies including the relocation of the Anishinaabe of the Grassy Narrows First Nation, and the upheaval of population displacement in the Hellenistic period. Finally, the authors invoke and reformulate symbols of the four horseman of the apocalypse as rhetorical analogues to frame those aspects of contemporary collapse that elucidate the horror of the zombie.

    Zombies in Western Culture: A Twenty-First Century Crisis is required reading for anyone interested in the phenomenon of zombies in contemporary culture. It will also be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience including students and scholars of culture studies, semiotics, philosophy, religious studies, eschatology, anthropology, Jungian studies, and sociology.     Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (Transforming Finnish Soundscapes, eds Heikki Uimonen, Meri Kytö & Kaisa Ruohonen) is a collection of research essays and texts that study the sonic environment and how it is experienced. Soundscapes related to time, place and the everyday shape our perception of the present and the past. Sounds can be pleasant and beautiful, pacing the day or year, annoying, boring and everything in between. The theme of transforming soundscapes combines the research essays in the publication. The essays draw from various disciplines and methodologies: media studies, anthropological field work and sensory observation, textual analysis and close reading, folkloristics, archeoacoustics and music studies.

     

    In turn, the texts gathered via a writing competition show how sounds can be listened to both analytically and aesthetically, connecting them to local, national and transnational cultures and histories pondering what sounds mean to the listeners and how they influence the soundscape they live in. The study is a revisit to the One Hundred Finnish Soundscapes project (2006). Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (toim. Heikki Uimonen, Meri Kytö & Kaisa Ruohonen) kokoaa yhteen ympäristön ääniä ja äänimaisemia tarkastelevia tieteellisiä artikkeleita sekä äänen kokemisesta kertovia tekstejä. Aikaan, paikkaan, arkeen ja juhlaan liittyvä äänimaisema muovaa nykypäiväämme ja rakentaa menneisyyttämme. Äänet ovat miellyttäviä ja kauniita, vuorokautta ja vuodenkiertoa rytmittäviä, häiritseviä, tylsiä ja sekä kaikkea näiden väliltä. Muuttuvien äänimaisemien tematiikka yhdistää myös kirjan tutkimusartikkeleita. Tutkimuksellisesti ne nojaavat eri tieteentraditioihin ja menetelmiin: mediatutkimukseen ja -analyysiin, antropologiseen kenttätallennukseen ja aistinvaraiseen havainnointiin, tekstianalyysiin ja lähilukuun, folkloristiikkaan, arkeoakustiikkaan ja musiikintutkimukseen.

     

    Kirjoituskilpailussa kerätyt tekstit puolestaan osoittavat, kuinka ääniä on mahdollista kuunnella analyyttisesti ja esteettisesti, asettaa ne osaksi alueellista, paikallista, valtakunnallista tai ylirajaista kulttuurihistoriallista tarkastelua ja pohtia, mitä ääni kuuntelijalleen merkitsee ja miten hän äänimaisemaansa vaikuttaa. Tutkimus on jatkoa Sata suomalaista äänimaisemaa -hankkeelle (2006).

    "In recent years research into creative labour and cultural work has usually addressed the politics of production in these fields, but the sociotechnical and aesthetic dimensions of collaborative creative work have been somewhat overlooked. This book aims to address this gap. Through case studies that range from TV showrunning to independent publishing, from the film industry to social media platforms such as Tumblr and Wattpad, this collection develops a critical understanding of the integral role collaboration plays in contemporary media and culture. It draws attention to diverse kinds of creative collaboration afforded via the intermediation of digital platforms and networked publics. It considers how these are incorporated into emergent market paradigms and investigates the complicated forms of subjectivity that develop as a consequence. But it also acknowledges historical continuities, not least in terms of the continued exploitation of ‘support personnel’ and of resulting artistic conflicts but also of alternative models that resist the precarious nature of contemporary cultural work.

    Finally, this volume attempts to situate creative collaboration in broader social and economic contexts, where the experience and outcomes of such work have proved more problematic than the rich potential of their promise would lead us to expect.

How did systems of information and communication shape and reflect this extraordinary change? Information and Mechanisms of Communication in Russia, 1600-1850 brings together a range of contributions to shed some light on this complex question. Communication networks such as the postal service and the gathering and circulation of news are examined alongside the growth of a bureaucratic apparatus that informed the government about its country and its people. The inscription of space is considered from the point of view of mapping and the changing public ‘graphosphere’ of signs and monuments. More than a series of institutional histories, this book is concerned with the way Russia discovered itself, envisioned itself and represented itself to its people.

What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions?

    The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”.

    Since the popularisation of the internet, low-income Brazilians have received little government support to help them access it. In response, they have largely self-financed their digital migration. Internet cafés became prosperous businesses in working-class neighbourhoods and rural settlements, and, more recently, families have aspired to buy their own home computer with hire purchase agreements. As low-income Brazilians began to access popular social media sites in the mid-2000s, affluent Brazilians ridiculed their limited technological skills, different tastes and poor schooling, but this did not deter them from expanding their online presence. Young people created profiles for barely literate older relatives and taught them to navigate platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Based on 15 months of ethnographic research, this book aims to understand why low-income Brazilians have invested so much of their time and money in learning about social media. Juliano Spyer explores this question from a number of perspectives, including education, relationships, work and politics. He argues that social media is the way for low-income Brazilians to stay connected to the family and friends they see in person on a regular basis, which suggests that social media serves a crucial function in strengthening traditional social relations

    Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic research in one of the most under-developed regions in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, this book describes the uses and consequences of social media for its residents. Jolynna Sinanan argues that this semi-urban town is a place in-between: somewhere city dwellers look down on and villagers look up to. The complex identity of the town is expressed through uses of social media, with significant results for understanding social media more generally. Not elevating oneself above others is one of the core values of the town, and social media becomes a tool for social visibility; that is, the process of how social norms come to be and how they are negotiated. Carnival logic and high-impact visuality is pervasive in uses of social media, even if Carnival is not embraced by all Trinidadians in the town and results in presenting oneself and association with different groups in varying ways. The study also has surprising results in how residents are explicitly non-activist and align themselves with everyday values of maintaining good relationships in a small town, rather than espousing more worldly or cosmopolitan values.

In the face of several major earthquakes and floods, riots and economic insecurity, police brutality and mass incarceration, some young black Angelenos turned to holy hip hop—a movement merging Christianity and hip hop culture—to “save” themselves and the city. Converting street corners to open-air churches and gangsta rap beats into anthems of praise, holy hip hoppers used gospel rap to navigate complicated social and spiritual realities and to transform the Southland’s fractured terrains into musical Zions. Armed with beats, rhymes, and bibles, they journeyed through black Lutheran congregations, prison ministries, African churches, reggae dancehalls, hip hop clubs, Nation of Islam meetings, and Black Lives Matter marches. Zanfagna’s fascinating ethnography provides a contemporary and unique view of black LA, offering a much-needed perspective on how music and religion intertwine in people’s everyday experiences.

    Die vorliegende Untersuchung beruht auf der These, dass die Iberische Halbinsel des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts in entscheidendem Maße durch ihre verbindende Lage zwischen Mittelmeer und Atlantik geprägt ist. Vor dem Hintergrund der divergierenden Forschungstendenzen von atlantischen Globalisierungstheorien (Humboldt, Chaunu, Braudel, Gruzinski) und romanistischer Literaturwissenschaft (Spitzer, Auerbach, Curtius, Gumbrecht) leistet die vorliegende Untersuchung einen Beitrag zu einer neuen, ästhetischen und literarischen Globalisierungsgeschichte (Ette). Auf der Basis eines raumsemantisch entwickelten, ästhetischen Atlantikbegriffs werden kanonische Texte des spanischen Siglo de Oro wie Góngoras "Soledades", Tirso de Molinas "Burlador de Sevilla" oder "La celosa de sí misma", aber auch Cervantes "Celoso extremeño" und diverse Pikaroromane neu gelesen. Dabei entsteht nicht nur eine philologische Phänomenologie der ersten modernen Phase der Globalisierung. Die Verbindung von philologischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Paradigmen (Barthes, de Certeau, Ortega, Gabilondo, Gilroy) erweist sich auch als höchst produktiv. Das spanische Siglo de Oro gewinnt so eine neue ethische, ästhetische und theoretische Aktualität

    Anna Voigt untersucht mit einer diskursanalytischen Vorgehensweise Formen von Männlichkeit in der US-Serie „Six Feet Under“ und kommt auf Grundlage kritischer Geschlechter- und Männlichkeitsforschung zu dem Ergebnis, dass auf der Folie ökonomischer Krisen eine Abkehr von komplementären Geschlechtscharakteren stattfindet während männliche Herrschaft weiterhin Wirkungsweisen entfaltet. Die Autorin kontrastiert ihre Analyseergebnisse mit den Serien „The L-Word“ und „Queer as Folk“ und dokumentiert, wie die inszenierten Formen von Männlichkeit mit Klassenverhältnissen und Fragen von Ethnizität und Rassismus in Sozialstrukturen und Institutionen verknüpft sind und dekonstruiert in Fernsehserien vermitteltes Wissen über Geschlecht. Sie zeigt auf, wie Männlichkeit als eine krisenhafte Kategorie sozialer Differenzierung kulturell hergestellt wird und ermöglicht damit einen kritischen Zugang zu aktuellen Unterhaltungsformaten. The term "vulnerable realism" can imply two different understandings: one presenting weak realism as incomplete, and mixed with other literary styles; the other bringing realistic vulnerable experience into narration.
