This period of intensified scrutiny coincided with a boom in the publishing industry, which, in turn, encouraged newspapers to pay greater attention to the world of books. Reviewing the South shows how Northern critics were as much involved in the Southern Literary Renaissance as Southern authors and critics. Southern writing, Gardner argues, served as a litmus to gauge Southern exceptionalism. For critics and their readers, nothing less than the region's ability to contribute to the vibrancy and growth of the nation was at stake"--

This book, through the study of periodicals and archive materials, offers a new view of Volynsky as a champion of Symbolist theater, supporter of Jewish playwrights, an ardent partisan of Habima theater and finally, a theoretician of Jewish theater. Throughout his life, Volynsky was a seeker of a Jewish-Christian synthesis, both religious and moral.     Eugenio de Ochoa desempeñó un papel fundamental en la conexión de la cultura española con Europa durante el siglo XIX, tanto por ser el vehículo por el que llegaron a España muchos autores contemporáneos como por mostrar al continente el patrimonio cultural nacional. Por medio del estudio de su figura se lleva a cabo un análisis de la cultura española decimonónica, partiendo de un enfoque sociológico de la misma y prestando más atención a las prácticas en el campo literario que al contenido de la creación.
