Wenn Erich Auerbach im Auszug des höfischen Ritters die Funktionskrise des feudalen Standes sieht, so benennt er damit einen politischen Strukturwandel, von dem der Ritterroman entstehungsgeschichtlich bedingt wird. Chrestiens de Troyes Erzählwerk lässt sich neu lesen: Als politisch sinnhafte Fiktion, die jenen historischen Übergang imaginär aufarbeitet, der sich von Feudalkönigtum zur souveränen Monarchie vollzieht. Dem politischen Umbruch seiner Epoche begegnet Chrestien mit einem Abenteuernarrativ, das fiktive Krisenbewältigung und die Projektion neuer Herrschaftsformen gleichermaßen leistet. Seine Ritterhelden werden als neue Subjekte der Herrschaft entworfen. Subjektwerdung und christliche Zeit finden dabei nicht nur in einer typologischen Erfüllungsstruktur ihre Entsprechung. Mit der Figur des »Aufhalters« bringt Chrestien auch die Endzeit in eine politische Theologie ein

    This is the first ever comprehensive study of the Scottish medieval romances. The book reinstates the status of the Scottish romances. It offers a new definition of the Scottish romance tradition, bringing together texts which have not generally been considered part of the same corpus. It argues that Barbour's Bruce (c .1375) established the rhetorical devices and literary traits which were going to be typical of the later Scottish romances. It also examines the extent to which the translation of the four Arthurian and Alexander romances from French originals follows Barbour's precepts. These

    "Drawing from medieval chivalric culture, the prose romance was a popular early modern genre featuring stories of courtship, combat, and travel. Flourishing at the same moment as the growing English trade with the Eastern Mediterranean, prose romances adopted both Eastern settings and new conceptions of masculinity--commercial rather than chivalric, erotic rather than militant. Knights in Arms moves beyond the best-known examples of the genre, such as Philip Sidney's Arcadia, to consider the broad range of texts which featured the Eastern Mediterranean in this era. Goran Stanivukovic highlights how eroticism within prose romances, particularly homoerotic desire, facilitated commercial, cross-ethnic, and cross-cultural interactions, shaping European knowledge and conceptions of the Mediterranean and the Ottoman Empire. Through his careful examination of these lesser-known works, Stanivukovic sheds important light on early modern trade, Mediterranean politics, and the changing meaning of masculinity in an age of commercial expansion."--

    Exploring the fate of the ideal of the English gentleman once the empire he was meant to embody declined, the author argues that the stylization of English masculinity became the central theme, focus, and conceit for many literary texts that represented the "condition of Britain" in the 1930s and the immediate postwar era. From the early writings of George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh to works by poets and novelists such as Philip Larkin, Ian Fleming, Barbara Pym, and A. S. Byatt, the author shows how Englishmen trafficking in the images of self-restraint, governance, decency, and detachment in the absence of a structuring imperial ethos became what the poet Larkin called "scarecrows of chivalry."
