No 19th century writer in German has been the subject of such intensive reception by modern literati as Adalbert Stifter. His order of things, the discovery of slowness and his silent inscrutability still exercise a fascination today. In these studies, central works of Stifter’s are analysed and the hitherto underrated moment of irony is highlighted. This irony leads to the supposedly model heroes and educational stories being at the same time debunked, and this suspension of standards leads time and again to unexpectedly comic effects.     ‘Who ever thought they would one day be able to read Malcolm Lowry’s fabled novel of the 1930s and 40s, In Ballast to the White Sea? Lord knows, I didn’t’ – Michael Hofmann, TLS

    This book breaks new ground in studies of the British novelist Malcolm Lowry (1909–57), as the first collection of new essays produced in response to the publication in 2014 of a scholarly edition of Lowry’s ‘lost’ novel, In Ballast to the White Sea. In their introduction, editors Helen Tookey and Bryan Biggs show how the publication of In Ballast sheds new light on Lowry as both a highly political writer and one deeply influenced by his native Merseyside, as his protagonist Sigbjørn Hansen-Tarnmoor walks the streets of Liverpool, wrestling with his own conscience and with pressing questions of class, identity and social reform. In the chapters that follow, renowned Lowry scholars and newer voices explore key aspects of the novel and its relation to the wider contexts of Lowry’s work. These include his complex relation to socialism and communism, the symbolic value of Norway, and the significance of tropes of loss, hauntings and doublings. The book draws on the unexpected opportunity offered by the rediscovery of In Ballast to look afresh at Lowry’s oeuvre, to ‘remake the voyage’.

    The Bildungsroman, or "novel of formation," has long led a paradoxical life within literary studies, having been construed both as a peculiarly German genre, a marker of that country's cultural difference from Western Europe, and as a universal expression of modernity. In Formative Fictions, Tobias Boes argues that the dual status of the Bildungsroman renders this novelistic form an elegant way to negotiate the diverging critical discourses surrounding national and world literature.Since the late eighteenth century, authors have employed the story of a protagonist's journey into maturity as a powerful tool with which to facilitate the creation of national communities among their readers. Such attempts always stumble over what Boes calls "cosmopolitan remainders," identity claims that resist nationalism's aim for closure in the normative regime of the nation-state. These cosmopolitan remainders are responsible for the curiously hesitant endings of so many novels of formation.In Formative Fictions, Boes presents readings of a number of novels-Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Karl Leberecht Immermann's The Epigones, Gustav Freytag's Debit and Credit, Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus among them-that have always been felt to be particularly "German" and compares them with novels by such authors as George Eliot and James Joyce to show that what seem to be markers of national particularity can productively be read as topics of world literature

    Marc Redfield maintains that the literary genre of the Bildungsroman brings into sharp focus the contradictions of aesthetics, and also that aesthetics exemplifies what is called ideology. He combines a wide-ranging account of the history and theory of aesthetics with close readings of novels by Goethe, George Eliot, and Gustave Flaubert. For Redfield, these fictions of character formation demonstrate the paradoxical relation between aesthetics and literature: the notion of the Bildungsroman may be expanded to apply to any text that can be figured as a subject producing itself in history, which is to say any text whatsoever. At the same time, the category may be contracted to include only a handful of novels, (or even none at all), a paradox that has led critics to denigrate the Bildungsroman as a phantom genre

    Main description: This comparison of 10 Bildungsromane (novels of formation) in German and French from the mid 19th century to the present is motivated by a dual interest. It sets out both to investigate the relations between literature and music and to elucidate the concept of Bildung. The study examines works such as George Sand's "Consuelo", Romain Rolland's "Jean-Christophe", Thomas Mann's "Doktor Faustus" and Thomas Bernhard's "Der Untergeher" with a view to delineating and providing a synthesis of the evolution and specific features of the 'musical Bildungsroman', notably pointing up the analogies between musical and literary structures discernible in them

No 19th century writer in German has been the subject of such intensive reception by modern literati as Adalbert Stifter. His order of things, the discovery of slowness and his silent inscrutability still exercise a fascination today. In these studies, central works of Stifter’s are analysed and the hitherto underrated moment of irony is highlighted. This irony leads to the supposedly model heroes and educational stories being at the same time debunked, and this suspension of standards leads time and again to unexpectedly comic effects.     Nur wenige Wissensgegenstände haben im 19. Jahrhundert eine ähnliche Auseinandersetzung erfahren wie die biologische Vererbung. Dabei ist Vererbung nicht nur ein zentrales Konzept innerhalb der Evolutionsbiologie, der Psychiatrie, der sozialen Hygiene und der historischen Hilfswissenschaft der Genealogie, sondern sie steht auch am Anfang eines modernen Begriffs der Familie und einer modernen Form des familialen Erzählens. Anhand der Analyse von Primärquellen aus den genannten Disziplinen und zahlreicher literarischer Texte – von Theodor Storm bis Thomas Mann – will diese Arbeit zeigen, dass die Geschichte der bürgerlichen Familie auf intrikate Weise mit dem naturwissenschaftlichen Wissen über Vererbung verschränkt ist und dass dieses Wissen Geburtshelfer für eine genuin bürgerliche Familiengeschichtsschreibung gewesen ist.

    The "Bildungsroman", or "novel of formation, " has long led a paradoxical life within literary studies, having been construed both as a peculiarly German genre, a marker of that country's cultural difference from Western Europe, and as a universal expression of modernity. In 'Formative Fictions', Tobias Boes argues that the dual status of the Bildungsroman renders this novelistic form an elegant way to negotiate the diverging critical discourses surrounding national and world literature. Since the late eighteenth century, authors have employed the story of a protagonist's journey into maturity as a powerful tool with which to facilitate the creation of national communities among their readers. Such attempts always stumble over what Boes calls "cosmopolitan remainders, " identity claims that resist nationalism's aim for closure in the normative regime of the nation-state. These cosmopolitan remainders are responsible for the curiously hesitant endings of so many novels of formation.

Anlässlich der Jubiläums-Neuedition eröffnen die Beiträge des wissenschaftlichen Begleitbandes theologische, philosophische und literaturwissenschaftliche Zugänge zu den Hintergründen seiner Epoche und Wirkungsgeschichte. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Verbindungslinien zwischen Religion, Ästhetik und individueller Biographie im Blick auf die Bedeutung der ‚inneren Welt‘ gelebter Frömmigkeit in Geschichte und Gegenwart. On the occasion of the ne edition of de Wettes didactic “Bildungsroman”, the accompanying scholarly volume open up theological, philosophical and literary approaches to the background of its epoch and interpretation. The focus of the interdisciplinary contributions lies on the interdependencies between religion, aesthetics and individual biography in their meaning for the 'inner world' of religious life and piety in the past and present.     What kinds of uncertainties and desires do generic issues evoke? How can we account for the continuing hold of the Bildungsroman as a model of analysis? Unsettling the Bildungsroman: Reading Contemporary Ethnic American Women's Fiction combines genre and cultural theory and offers a cross-ethnic comparative approach to the tradition of the female novel of development and the American coming-of-age narrative. Examining closely the work of Jamaica Kincaid, Sandra Cisneros, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Audre Lorde, the chapters foreground processes of constructing an alternative "art of living" which challenges the Bildungsroman 's drive for either assimilation or ethnic homogeneity and pushes for new configurations of ethnic and American female identity. Drawing on feminist/gender studies, psychoanalytic theory, translation theory, queer theory, and disability studies, the book provides a theoretically engaged rethinking of the Bildungsroman 's form and function. Addressing questions of aesthetics and politics, freedom and belonging, betrayal and responsibility, and tracing the Bildungsroman 's links with life-writing forms such as immigrant narrative, mother-daughter story, biomythography, and illness narrative, the study outlines the various ways in which the novel of individual development becomes an appropriate site for the negotiation of several enduring and contentious tensions in ethnic American writing. Of potential interest to scholars of American literature, but also ethnic, feminist and postcolonial literatures, and to students of American literature and culture, the book demonstrates the Bildungsroman 's ongoing relevance and expanded capacity of representation in an ethnic American and postcolonial context.

Miller looks at works like Hard Times, The Mill on the Floss, and Sons and Lovers, showing how the provincial realist novel’s longstanding reliance on marriage and inheritance plots transforms against the backdrop of exhaustion to withhold the promise of reproductive futurity. She explores how adventure stories like Treasure Island and Heart of Darkness reorient fictional space toward the resource frontier. And she shows how utopian and fantasy works like “Sultana’s Dream,” The Time Machine, and The Hobbit offer imaginative ways of envisioning energy beyond extractivism.This illuminating book reveals how an era marked by violent mineral resource rushes gave rise to literary forms and genres that extend extractivism as a mode of environmental understanding
