    Angesichts der Katastrophenerfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts machen bedeutende Autoren und Autorinnen der Moderne von der vielschichtigen Welttheatermetapher Gebrauch, um die Frage nach Sinn und Gestalt der Wirklichkeit zu bearbeiten. Diesem erklärungsbedürftigen Rückgriff auf eine Tradition, die in der europäischen Literatur vor allem mit einem jüdisch-christlichen Verständnis der Geschichte als Heilsdrama verbunden zu sein scheint, widmet sich die Autorin in der vorliegenden Untersuchung. -- Schon in der Antike beginnt ein jahrtausendelanger, spannungsreicher und in unterschiedlichen Diskursen bezeugter Rezeptionsprozeß, der über Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten im jeweiligen Menschen- und Geschichtsbild Auskunft gibt und von der reizvollen Dynamik zeugt, die der Metapher eignet. Als vielstelliges Strukturmodell verleiht das Welttheater keinem festgefügten Geschichtsbild Ausdruck. Vielmehr erweist sich die Metapher gerade dort als aussagekräftig, wo ein solches fehlt, erarbeitet wird, erschüttert oder zur Diskussion gestellt ist. Angesichts dieser Situation wird die Arbeit am Welttheater als Sinn- und Ausdruckssuche deutlich: Walter Benjamin artikuliert vor allem in seiner Abhandlung "Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels" ein Verständnis der neuzeitlichen Geschichte als Trauer-Spiel, das in der Moderne als Rolle seine Radikalisierung findet. Eine messianische Konstruktion tritt an die Stelle des jüdisch-christlichen Heilsdramas. Karl Kraus leugnet in seiner maßlosen "Tragödie" "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" die Sinnhaftigkeit einer Welt, deren Geschichte in der Weltkriegskatastrophe an ihr apokalyptisches Ende gekommen ist. Gleichwohl bleibt die Frage nach der höchsten Spielleitung und einem Sinn, der diese Wirklichkeit übersteigt, präsent. Hugo von Hofmannsthal knüpft in seinem Festspiel "Das Salzburger Große Welttheater nur vordergründig am mittelalterlichen Heilsverständnis an, um das liturgische Spiel in das epiphane Erleben des Gesamtkunstwerks zu transformieren. In besonderer Weise zeugt Else Lasker-Schülers irritierendes Nachlaßdrama "IchundIch" von einer Geschichtserfahrung, der Ausdruck zu verleihen eine kaum zu bewältigende Aufgabe der Kunst ist. Wohl am konsequentesten wird hier der zerstörerische Charakter der Wirklichkeit in die ästhetische Gestalt überführt, das Welttheater auf der "Herzensbühne" einer verzweifelten Dichterin zum Erprobungsraum, der Spielenden und Zuschauenden immer neue Standortbestimmungen zumutet und jeglicher Suggestion von Ganzheit entgegenläuft. -- Irene Pieper verdeutlicht die Arbeit am Welttheater als den Versuch, angesichts einer übermächtigen, katastrophal erfahrenen geschichtlichen Wirklichkeit verstellte oder verlorene Spiel- und Erfahrungsräume neu zugänglich zu machen, dies mit den Mitteln der Kunst.

    This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories. Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future.

    Considering that the German dramatist Heiner Müller has treated several times the subject of the angel of history, this essay proposes a comparison between Müller’s first angel (Der glücklose Engel) from 1958 and the original “angel of history” (Engel der Geschichte), a seminal text written by Walter Benjamin in 1940. Benjamin’s work reflects the author’s thoughts on the corruption of history and the dangerous notion of progress. Müller’s angel, on the contrary, despite his beliefs in the destructive force of the history, sees the future in a positive perspective.

    This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories.Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future

    Considering that the German dramatist Heiner Müller has treated several times the subject of the angel of history, this essay proposes a comparison between Müller’s first angel (Der glücklose Engel) from 1958 and the original “angel of history” (Engel der Geschichte), a seminal text written by Walter Benjamin in 1940. Benjamin’s work reflects the author’s thoughts on the corruption of history and the dangerous notion of progress. Müller’s angel, on the contrary, despite his beliefs in the destructive force of the history, sees the future in a positive perspective.

    This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories. Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future.
