Close readings konkretisieren aktuelle Theorien zu subtiler Gewalt und befragen das Schweigen im Hinblick auf Gender, Politik, Ökonomie und kulturelles Gedächtnis. Silence can be injurious – similar to words, yet different. This study uses the perspectives of literary and cultural studies to examine the violence of silence in the works of Thomas Bernhard, K?b? Abe, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Kenzabur? ?e. Close readings yield concrete illustrations of current theories regarding subtle forms of violence and interrogate silence in the context of gender, politics, economy, and cultural memory.

    Stereotypical characters that promoted the Nazi worldview were repurposed by antifascist authors in Weimar Germany, argues Dagmar C.G. Lorenz. This is the first book to trace Nazi characters through the German and Austrian literature. Until the defeat of the Third Reich, pro-Nazi literature was widely distributed. However, after the war, Nazi publications were suppressed or even banned, and new writers began to dominate the market alongside exile and resistance authors. The fact that Nazi figures remained consistent suggests that, rather than representing real people, they functioned as ideological signifiers. Recent literature and films set in the Nazi era show that "the Nazis", ambiguous characters with a sinister appeal, live on as an established trope in the cultural imagination.     The Austrian Empire was not a colonial power in the sense that fellow actors like 19th-century England and France were. It nevertheless oversaw a multinational federation where the capital of Vienna was unmistakably linked with its eastern periphery in a quasi-colonial arrangement that inevitably shaped the cultural and intellectual life of the Habsburg Empire. This was particularly evident in the era’s colonial utopian writing, and Tropics of Vienna blends literary criticism, cultural theory, and historical analysis to illuminate this curious genre. By analyzing the works of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Theodor Herzl, Joseph Roth, and other representative Austrian writers, it reveals a shared longing for alternative social and spatial configurations beyond the concept of the “nation-state” prevalent at the time

    Religion and enlightenment, the twin themes of this volume, always exist in tension. The tensions, affinities, and conflicts between the two, as they play out in German literature from Goethe, Schiller and Kleist down to Kafka and Thomas Mann, are explored in this volume, with one section examining their interplay in the neglected Austrian Enlightenment. Thanks to the historical and textual criticism of the Bible, the ‘sea of faith’ began its withdrawal sooner in Germany than in England, and this collection traces its retreat, looking especially at Nietzsche’s militant opposition to Christianity and at the expression in some modernist writing of a distinctly post-Christian and even post-human outlook

For a millennium, Austrian writers have used images of Europe and its hegemonic culture as their political and cultural reference points. Yet in discussions of Europe's nation-states, Austria appears only as an afterthought, no matter that its precursor states-the Holy Roman Empire, the Austrian Empire, and Austria Hungary-represent a globalized European cultural space outside the dominant paradigm of nationalist colonialism. Austrian writers today confront reunited Europe in full acknowledgment of Austro-Hungary's multicultural heritage, a culture mixing various nationalities, ethnicities and cultural forms, including ancestors from the Balkans and beyond. To challenge standard accounts of 18th- through 20th-century European imperial identity construction, Vienna's Dreams of Europe introduces a group of Austrian public intellectuals and authors who have since the 18th century construed their own publics as European. Dystopien, aber umgekehrt auch Utopien durchziehen die österreichische, wie die europäische Literatur. In einer Reihe von Beiträgen werden in dem Band solche Krisen-, aber auch Hoffnungsphänomene vom 18. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert nachgezeichnet. Dabei entsteht das Bild einer von Utopien und Dystopien gekennzeichneten Literatur der Moderne und Postmoderne. Utopien, seit Thomas Morus' Utopia (1516), sind vor allem als Staatsutopien weit verbreitet und entwickeln Alternativmodelle zu gegenwärtigen Staatsgebilden. Für sie alle gilt, dass sie ohne "Möglichkeitssinn" (Robert Musil) und "Möglichkeitsdenken" (Wilhelm Voßkamp) nicht konzipiert werden hätten können. Dystopien beschreiben oft futuristische Weltuntergangsszenarien, die sich aufgrund der multiplen Krisen nicht zuletzt seit der Jahrtausendwende einer großen Beliebtheit erfreuen. Bemerkenswerterweise ziehen Leser/-innen, wie Thomas Macho bemerkt hat, aus Untergangsszenarien mehr subjektiven Lustgewinn als aus utopischen Konstruktionen. In Beiträgen zu Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Johann Nestroy, Arthur Schnitzler, Ödön von Horváth, Alfred Kubin, Thomas Bernhard, Péter Nádas, Fedor Ivanovič Panferov und Elfriede Jelinek u.a. wird den titelgebenden thematischen Konzepten nachgegangen. Der Band richtet sich an Literaturwissenschaftler/-innen, aber auch an nichtgermanistische Leser/-innen, die Interesse an den Phänomenen von Utopie und Dystopie in der österreichischen und europäischen Literatur haben

This volume thus surveys Austrian writers of drama, prose fiction, and lyric poetry; relates them to the distinctive history of modern Austria,a democratic republic that was overtaken by civil war and authoritarian rule, absorbed into Nazi Germany, and re-established as a neutral state; and examines their response to controversial events such as the collusion with Nazism, the Waldheim affair, and the rise of Haider and the extreme right. In addition to confronting controversy in the relations between literature, history, and politics, the volume examines popular culture in line with current trends. Contributors: Judith Beniston, Janet Stewart, Andrew Barker, Murray Hall, Anthony Bushell, Dagmar Lorenz, Juliane Vogel, Jonathan Long, Joseph McVeigh, Allyson Fiddler. Katrin Kohl is Lecturer in German and a Fellow of Jesus College, and Ritchie Robertson is Taylor Professor of German Language and Literature and a Fellow of The Queen's College, both at the University of Oxford.

Für die meisten Niederländer und Flamen ist Österreich in erster Linie ein beliebtes Urlaubsland, dessen Bild von den Bergen Tirols, den Wiener Lipizzanern und den vielen, vielen Heurigen geprägt ist. Dass sich hinter den Bergen eine andere Welt findet, eine überaus vielfältige und in so manchem eigenständige Literatur, ist den wenigsten bewusst. Während sich die österreichische Herkunft Thomas Bernhards und Peter Handkes schon herumgesprochen haben dürfte, verbinden – abgesehen von einem Kreise der Eingeweihten – nur die wenigsten Niederländer und Flamen Franz Werfel, Stefan Zweig, Theodor Kramer, Christoph Ransmayr und viele andere mit der 1918 aus der Donaumonarchie hervorgegangenen, 1945 ein zweites Mal gegründeten Republik. Dass die Frage nach dem spezifischen Charakter der deutschsprachigen Literatur aus Österreich im Land ihres Entstehens sehr wohl ein Thema war und ist, ist nur eines der vielen Leitmotive im vorliegenden Band über die österreichische Literatur des 20. For decades postwar Austrian literature has been measured against and moulded into a series of generic categories and grand cultural narratives, from nostalgic ‘restoration’ literature of the 1950s through the socially critical ‘anti- Heimat ’ novel to recent literary reckonings with Austria’s Nazi past. Peering through the lens of film adaptation, this book rattles the generic shackles imposed by literary history and provides an entirely new critical perspective on Austrian literature. Its original methodological approach challenges the primacy of written sources in existing scholarship and uses the distortions generated by the shift in medium as a productive starting point for literary analysis. Five case studies approach canonical texts in post-war Austrian literature by Gerhard Fritsch, Franz Innerhofer, Gerhard Roth, Elfriede Jelinek, and Robert Schindel, through close readings of their cinematic adaptations, concentrating on key areas of narratological concern: plot, narrative perspective, authorship, and post-modern ontologies. Setting the texts within the historical, cultural and political discourses that define the ‘Alpine Republic’, this study investigates fundamental aspects of Austrian national identity, such as its Habsburg and National Socialist legacies

This was particularly evident in the era's colonial utopian writing, and Tropics of Vienna blends literary criticism, cultural theory, and historical analysis to illuminate this curious genre.
