    This is a study of Black women's anger, its attempted silencing, and its cultural effects. It grounds the discussion of the political and cultural function of Black feminist anger in several points of inquiry, tying it to the conditions of Black life mired in the structures that characterize the afterlives of slavery and colonialism. Turning to anger can do important work with regards to unraveling epistemic and hermeneutic injustices, the role of negative affect in public spaces, as well as in everyday communicative situations, and how emotional standards integral to dominant definitions of the human and of subjectivity function to maintain and reify human difference and discrimination. By analyzing integral works of Black literature, this book explores how the messiness of anger and rage is navigated and represented in literary texts, but also commended and valued as part of Black feminist lived experience

    Why do humans get angry with objects? Why is it that a malfunctioning computer, a broken tool, or a fallen glass causes an outbreak of fury? How is it possible to speak of an inanimate object's recalcitrance, obstinacy, or even malice? When things assume a will of their own and seem to act out against human desires and wishes rather than disappear into automatic, unconscious functionality, the breakdown is experienced not as something neutral but affectively--as rage or as outbursts of laughter. Such emotions are always psychosocial: public, rhetorically performed, and therefore irreducible to a "private" feeling. By investigating the minutest details of life among dysfunctional household items through the discourses of philosophy and science, as well as in literary works by Laurence Sterne, Jean Paul, Friedrich Theodor Vischer, and Heimito von Doderer, Kreienbrock reconsiders the modern bourgeois poetics that render things the way we know and suffer them

    "Recognizing that ideas about emotions vary historically as well as culturally, Kennedy draws from recent critical work on emotions by historians, literary scholars, philosophers, and psychologists, as well as comparative studies of the emotions by cultural anthropologists. She contends that ideas about women's anger in early modern England are both like and unlike those in twentieth-century America. Although women's anger is often dismissed as irrational in both eras, for instance, in the early modern era women were thought to become angry more often and more easily than men due to their inherent physiological, intellectual, and moral inferiority."     The Romantic age was one of anger and its consequences: revolution and reaction, terror and war. Andrew M. Stauffer explores the changing place of anger in the literature and culture of the period, as English men and women rethought their relationship to the aggressive passions in the wake of the French Revolution. Drawing on diverse fields and discourses such as aesthetics, politics, medicine and the law and tracing the classical legacy the Romantics inherited, Stauffer charts the period's struggle to define the relationship of anger to justice and the creative self. In their poetry and prose, Romantic authors including Blake, Coleridge, Godwin, Shelley and Byron negotiate the meanings of indignation and rage amidst a clamourous debate over the place of anger in art and in civil society. This innovative book has much to contribute to the understanding of Romantic literature and the cultural history of the emotions

    Anger is found everywhere in the ancient world, starting with the very first word of the Iliad and continuing through all literary genres and every aspect of public and private life. Yet it is only recently, as a variety of disciplines start to devote attention to the history and nature of the emotions, that Classicists, ancient historians and ancient philosophers have begun to study anger in antiquity with the seriousness and attention it deserves. This volume brings together a number of significant studies by authors from different disciplines and countries, on literary, philosophical, medical and political aspects of ancient anger from Homer until the Roman Imperial Period.     In den letzen Jahren hat die Beschäftigung mit Zorn als literarischem und gesellschaftlichem Phänomen Hochkonjunktur. Daran anknüpfend wird hier der Frage nachgegangen, wie Autoren des 12. Jahrhunderts Zorn für das Erzählen von Macht und Herrschaft funktionalisieren. Grundlegend ist dabei, dass erstmals Texte mehrerer Gattungen, die als zentrale Konzeptualisierungen früher Staatlichkeit gelten können, gemeinsam in den Blick genommen werden.
