    In a prominent Forbes magazine piece, Anderson (2019) asks whether ethics really matter to today's consumers. The answer to this question appears to be a resounding yes. “Unlike any other time in history, consumers are truly demanding more from the companies with which they do business. Today’s shoppers are looking for ethical, eco-friendly brands that put people and the planet ahead of profits.” One need not look far for prominent examples of consumers’ moral outrage over injustice and unfairness in the marketplace. Critiques of discrimination and unequal economic outcomes are abound, and often spread like wildfire in today’s virtual spaces. Whether these changes reflect a fundamental shift in consumers’ preferences or merely platformed and elevated by social media, it is undoubtable that companies face increasing pressures to behave more ethically. One survey of UK consumers found that more than half of those surveyed wanted companies to take a stand on issues they care about such as sustainability, transparency and fair employment practices (Accenture Strategy 2018). Companies that do not align with customer beliefs pay the price. Consumers avoid sellers they perceive as unfair and are more likely to demand refunds, complain, and spread negative word of mouth upon encountering unfair tactics (Fehr and Schmidt 1999; Xia and Monroe 2017; Xia, Monroe, and Cox 2004). In this research I study consumers’ fairness concerns in two domains. In essay 1, I examine the perceived fairness of demographic price discrimination. In this joint work with Alixandra Barasch and Vicki Morwitz we study the demographic price discrimination in the digital age. We find that consumers’ fairness perceptions depend on who consumers believe is responsible for implementing it—a person or an algorithm. Contrary to the substantial literature emphasizing consumers’ algorithm aversion, we show that consumers view demographic-based price discrimination as more fair when prices are determined by algorithms (versus humans). We also offer evidence for a mechanism we propose: when demographic price discrimination is performed by algorithms, people are less likely to attribute the discriminatory action to the agent’s moral agency. In essay 2, I explore consumers’ perceptions of the fairness of the gender pay gap. In this work, conducted with Alixandra Barasch and Amit Bhattacharjee, we examine how consumers evaluate unequal economic outcomes arising from explicitly unbiased institutional processes. Three studies find that men perceive gender pay gaps as equally fair regardless of direction, while women perceive the exact same outcomes as more indicative of institutional unfairness when they are disadvantaged than when men are disadvantaged. Our findings highlight one reason for the contentiousness of discussions on outcome inequality: evidence for institutional discrimination and perceptions of what constitutes unbiased treatment may be in the eye of the beholder.

    This thesis confronts the challenges of complexity in financial systems, in which economic questions transform into computer science and mathematical problems. For instance, this occurs when systems have complicated dynamic interactions, and when systems are large and direct solution methods are not necessarily feasible.The first part of the thesis focuses on decentralized finance systems, which leverage new blockchain technologies to replace the role of risky financial intermediaries with decentralized (and more robust) structures, and the design of stablecoins, which aim to be a stable asset in a setting in which USD cannot be held directly. Decentralized stablecoins aim to function based on incentive design supported by transparent rules enforced cryptographically, in contrast to traditional currencies, which are supported by legal and governmental systems. This work explores new risks that complicate the design of resilient stablecoins, leading to significant results characterizing stablecoin runs and deleveraging spirals and new governance risks in decentralized finance protocols. The second part of this thesis focuses on cascades in economic networks, in which many firms interact with each other. This work explores new types of risks that can arise due to network structure and confronts two main issues that prevent the application of economic network models in practice, namely that these models can be very sensitive to parameter uncertainty and many aspects of these models can be computationally hard to compute. This leads to several significant results:• Characterizing mathematical properties of reinsurance contagion models, including dangerous structures that lead to retrocession spirals and underestimation of risk; • Adapting influence maximization methods to the problem of intervening in economic network contagion, enabling an NP-hard problem to be solved approximately in practice;• Applying perturbation theory to bound sensitivity in economic networks, improving on and unifying past results, and providing a means for network analysis to be more actionable in practice.This work involves applying methods from network analysis, perturbation theory, stochastic processes, agent-based models, game theory, and simulations.

    This thesis is focused on the development of sample-efficient algorithms for personalized data-driven decision-making. In particular, the dissertation aims to address the following questions in both online (sequential) and offline (batch) settings: (i) What problem structures allow for achieving instance-specific fast regret rates? (ii) How can these problem structures be leveraged to design practical algorithms that achieve fast theoretical rates?Part I of this thesis investigates the above questions from an online perspective. Chapter 2 studies the smooth contextual bandit problem, where we use the smoothness property of the function class to design contextual bandit algorithms that interpolate between two extremes previously studied in isolation: nondifferentiable bandits and parametric-response bandits. Chapter 3 examines the DTR bandit problem, where we develop the first online algorithm with logarithmic regret for dynamic treatment regimes that involve personalized, adaptive, multi-stage treatment plans.Part II of this work delves into fast regret rates for offline problems by leveraging a probabilistic condition that measures the distribution of the reward gap between the optimal and second-optimal decisions, which we term the margin condition. In the case of contextual linear optimization, Chapter 4 shows that the naive plug-in approach actually achieves regret convergence rates that are significantly faster than methods that directly optimize downstream decision performance. In the case of offline reinforcement learning, Chapter 5 presents a finer regret analysis that characterizes the faster-than-square-root regret convergence rate we observe in practice.

Cultures notoriously differ as to the content of their rules, but there is no culture without rules. In this book, historian of science Lorraine Daston adopts a long term perspective for studying rules from diverse sources, including monastic orders, cookbooks, and mathematical algorithms. She argues that in the Western tradition most rules can be characterized as one of the following: tools of measurement and calculation, models or paradigms, or laws. Moreover, they exist on spectra from specific to general, flexible to rigid and the specific-to-general, and universal-to-particular. In investigating how rules work, how they don't work, how they've changed across time, and why exceptions are necessary, Daston paints a vivid picture of Western civilization from the antiquity to the present."--
