Prisons without Walls -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index The magnitude of the legal violence exercised by the French to colonize and occupy Algeria (1830-1962) is such that only aesthetic works have been able to register its enduring effects. In Decolonizing Memory Jill Jarvis examines the power of literature to provide what demographic data, historical facts, and legal trials have not in terms of attesting to and accounting for this destruction. Taking up the unfinished work of decolonization since 1962, Algerian writers have played a crucial role in forging historical memory and nurturing political resistance-their work helps to make possible what state violence has rendered almost unthinkable. Drawing together readings of multilingual texts by Yamina Mechakra, Waciny Laredj, Zahia Rahmani, Fadhma Aïth Mansour Amrouche, Assia Djebar, and Samira Negrouche alongside theoretical, juridical, visual, and activist texts from both Algeria's national liberation war (1954-1962) and war on civilians (1988-1999), this book challenges temporal and geographical frameworks that have implicitly organized studies of cultural memory around Euro-American reference points. Jarvis shows how this literature rewrites history, disputes state authority to arbitrate justice, and cultivates a multilingual archive for imagining decolonized futures

"Gender and the Spatiality of Blackness in Contemporary AfroFrench Narratives approaches the study of AfroEurope through narrative forms produced in contemporary France, a location which richly illustrates differentiated (although imbricated) readings of blackness in European spaces. The book adds to the existing literature by adopting a transdisciplinary approach that combines critical black and urban geographies, intersectionality, as well as social and textual analysis. The book concerns itself with the spatial negotiations of Afroeuropean woman in France, through the figure of the black fla̲neuse. Proposing 'walking as method', this critical work gets beneath spectacular representations of ghettoised banlieues, televised protests and shipwrecked migrants to explore the spatiality of blackness in the everyday. It discusses a range of narrative forms, the social context of their production, as well as the political contestations and cultural dynamics with which they engage. Foregrounding expressive modes and forms produced by AfroFrench women that have traditionally received little critical attention outside of the French and Francophone world, this book will be relevant to academics, researchers, writers, students, activists and readers with interests in Literary and Cultural Studies, African and Afrodiasporic Studies, Black Feminisms, Migration Studies, Critical Black Geographies, Francophone Studies and the comparative framework of Afroeuropean Studies"--

Trois jours durant, des auteurs de la région, mais aussi de Belgique, de France ou du Canada, s'y sont rassemblés pour discuter de l'"écriture du conflit". Six écrivains reconnus - Guillaume Jan, Blaise Ndala, Jean-Pierre Orban, Élise Rida Musomandera, Roland Rugero et Joëlle Sambi - sont venus présenter leurs oeuvres, en ayant accepté au préalable de s'entre-lire pour mieux débattre dans le cadre de quatre tables rondes. Douze auteurs "en herbe" vivant à Bukavu, Goma, Butembo (Sud-Kivu et Nord-Kivu, RD Congo), Kigali (Rwanda) et Bujumbura (Burundi) les ont rejoints. "In the first decades after the end of French rule, Francophone authors engaged in an exercise of rewriting narratives from the colonial literary canon. In The Author as Cannibal, Felisa Vergara Reynolds presents these textual revisions as figurative acts of cannibalism and examines how these literary cannibalizations critique colonialism and its legacy in each author's homeland. Reynolds focuses on four representative texts: Une tempête (1969) by Aimé Césaire, Le temps de Tamango (1981) by Boubacar Boris Diop, L'amour, la fantasia (1985) by Assia Djebar, and La migration des coeurs (1995) by Maryse Condé. Though written independently in Africa and the Caribbean, these texts all combine critical adaptation with creative destruction in an attempt to eradicate the social, political, cultural, and linguistic remnants of colonization long after independence.The Author as Cannibal situates these works within Francophone studies, showing that the extent of their postcolonial critique is better understood when they are considered collectively. Crucial to the book are two interviews with Maryse Condé, which provide great insight on literary cannibalism. By foregrounding thematic concerns and writing strategies in these texts, Reynolds shows how these re-writings are an underappreciated collective form of protest and resistance for Francophone authors"--

Prisons without Walls "Decolonizing Memory argues that writers and artists have played an important role in cultivating historical memory and nurturing political resistance in Algeria, and shows that the magnitude of the violence exercised by the French to colonize and occupy Algeria is such that only aesthetic works, in particular literature, have been able to register its enduring effects. Through readings of French and Arabic texts by writers including Zahia Rahmani, Yamina Mechakra, Waciny Laredj, Fadhma Aíth Mansour Amrouche, Frantz Fanon, Assia Djebar, and Samira Negrouche, the book centers Algeria as an important nexus of aesthetic creation and theoretical contestation. Its argument foregrounds the impasses and disjunctions brought to light by this constellation of literary texts to demonstrate how Algerian writers have transformed the genre of testimony in ways that both defy imposed linguistic partitions and dispute the authority of the state to be the ultimate arbiter of justice"--

French and Francophone, Fraud and Fake -- Conclusion -- Notes -- Index Writing a new page in the surprisingly long history of literary deceit, Impostors examines a series of literary hoaxes, deceptions that involved flagrant acts of cultural appropriation. This book looks at authors who posed as people they were not, in order to claim a different ethnic, class, or other identity. These writers were, in other words, literary usurpers and appropriators who trafficked in what Christopher L. Miller terms the “intercultural hoax.” In the United States, such hoaxes are familiar. Forrest Carter’s The Education of Little Tree and JT LeRoy’s Sarah are two infamous examples. Miller’s contribution is to study hoaxes beyond our borders, employing a comparative framework and bringing French and African identity hoaxes into dialogue with some of their better-known American counterparts. In France, multiculturalism is generally eschewed in favor of universalism, and there should thus be no identities (in the American sense) to steal. However, as Miller demonstrates, this too is a ruse: French universalism can only go so far and do so much. There is plenty of otherness to appropriate. This French and Francophone tradition of imposture has never received the study it deserves. Taking a novel approach to this understudied tradition, Impostors examines hoaxes in both countries, finding similar practices of deception and questions of harm

    The Chadian writer Nimrod-philosopher, poet, novelist, and essayist-is one of the most dynamic and vital voices in contemporary African literature and thought. Introductory material by Frieda Ekotto provides context for Nimrod's work and demonstrates the urgency of making it available beyond Francophone Africa to a broader global audience. At the heart of this volume are Nimrod's essays on LeI{CC}{80}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{99}{AF}#x90;opold SeI{CC}{80}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{99}{AF}#x90;dar Senghor, a key figure in the literary and aesthetic NeI{CC}{80}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{84}{97}{acute}{99}{AF}#x90;gritude movement of the 1930s and president of Senegal from 1945 through 1980. Widely dismissed in recent decades as problematically essentialist, Senghorian Negritude articulated notions of "blackness" as a way of transcending deep divisions across a Black Diaspora under French colonial rule. Nimrod offers a nuanced reading of Senghor, drawing out the full complexities of Senghor's philosophy and reevaluating how race and colonialism function in a French-speaking space. Also included in this volume are Nimrod's essays on literature from the 2008 collection, The New French Matter (La nouvelle chose française). Representing his prose fiction is his 2010 work, Rivers' Gold (L'or des rivières). Also featured are some of Nimrod's best-loved poems, in both English translation and the original French. "Gender and the Spatiality of Blackness in Contemporary AfroFrench Narratives approaches the study of AfroEurope through narrative forms produced in contemporary France, a location which richly illustrates differentiated (although imbricated) readings of blackness in European spaces. The book adds to the existing literature by adopting a transdisciplinary approach that combines critical black and urban geographies, intersectionality, as well as social and textual analysis. The book concerns itself with the spatial negotiations of Afroeuropean woman in France, through the figure of the black fla̲neuse. Proposing 'walking as method', this critical work gets beneath spectacular representations of ghettoised banlieues, televised protests and shipwrecked migrants to explore the spatiality of blackness in the everyday. It discusses a range of narrative forms, the social context of their production, as well as the political contestations and cultural dynamics with which they engage. Foregrounding expressive modes and forms produced by AfroFrench women that have traditionally received little critical attention outside of the French and Francophone world, this book will be relevant to academics, researchers, writers, students, activists and readers with interests in Literary and Cultural Studies, African and Afrodiasporic Studies, Black Feminisms, Migration Studies, Critical Black Geographies, Francophone Studies and the comparative framework of Afroeuropean Studies"--
