Thanks to the authors research and knowledge, the book is a very English story about the tragically short spring of English artistic creativity between 1910 and 1920; the greatest such renaissance since Shakespeare and Purcell in the 17th century. It focuses on these exceptional poets, composers and artists experiences in the front line and what resulted from these. It argues that we need to move beyond discourse, narrative and how historical events are represented to fully understand what commemoration does, socially, politically and culturally. Adopting an experiential reframing treats sensory, affective and emotional feelings as fundamental to how we collectively understand shared histories, and through them, shared identities. The volume features fifteen case studies from ten countries, covering a variety of settings and national contexts specific to the First World War. Together the chapters demonstrate that a new conceptualisation of commemoration is needed: one that attends to how it feels"--

Kenmerkend voor de Grote Oorlog was 'de materiaalslag', een strijd op afstand waarin de mitrailleur en de artillerie domineerden. De geïllustreerde pers creëerde echter het beeld van een heroïsche strijd waarin het zwaard en de bajonet als vanouds de boventoon voerden. De ware gruwelen werden verhuld. Na de grote offensieven van 1916 werkte deze strategie niet meer. De enorme verliezen en de verhalen van de frontsoldaten maakten de burgerbevolking achter de linies geleidelijk aan bewust van de ware aard en omvang van de oorlog"
