Based on three works by German scholars published in the past few years the linguistic features of Kiezdeutsch are described and the issues of its sociolinguistic status and of its origin are discussed.     Abstract: The aim of this paper is to compare the disciplinary field of language policies with public policies. Language policies as a field of study emerge from special historical conditions together with sociolinguistics which is a sector of the discipline. The studies in language policies bear traces of this relationship. We intend to show in this article some characteristics and black boxes of the analyses in language policies, due to this sociolinguistic setting. We propose to put into perspective these analyses with the analytical orientations of public policies and the evolution of these towards the sociology of public action, from a small corpus of citations. This confrontation advocates a more multidisciplinary conception of research in language policies and, by this possible enrichment, a partial renovation of the field

    Abstract: Studierende, die entweder einen Teil oder das gesamte Studium an einer ausländischen Universität absolvieren, stellen insbesondere im Kontext der Internationalisierung der Hochschulen, aber auch hinsichtlich der Erforschung von Interkulturalität generell, interessante Forschungssubjekte dar. Doch obwohl diese Gruppe der Studierenden einen relativ einfachen Feldzugang ermöglicht, gibt es -wie wir, Helena Drawert und Vasco da Silva, in diesem Artikel zeigen werden- nur recht wenige qualitative Studien zur äußeren und inneren Gestalt von studentischen Auslandsaufenthalten. Anhand der Themenschwerpunkte unserer derzeit laufenden Dissertationsprojekte soll im Folgenden dargelegt werden, wie die interkulturelle, qualitative Forschung das Potential dieser Zielgruppe nutzen kann, um unterschiedliche Phänomene zu untersuchen und diverse Frage- und Problemstellungen zu erörtern

    Abstract: Die von John J. Gumperz ins Leben gerufene Interaktionale Soziolinguistik ist in der Soziologie bislang ebensowenig rezipiert worden wie ihre Vorläuferin, die Ethnographie der Kommunikation. Deshalb soll gezeigt werden, wie die Untersuchung interkultureller Kommunikation zur entscheidenden Neubestimmung von Konzepten wie Sprachgemeinschaft, Kodewechsel und Diglossie führt; überdies liefert sie - im Sinne einer Hermeneutik des Mißverständnisses - einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Aufdeckung allgemeiner Strukturen der Kommunikation. Kommunikatives Handeln wird dabei als ein Prozeß der Kontextualisierung verstanden. Verbale und nonverbale Kontextualisierungsschlüssel erlauben den Handelnden, auf Intentionen und Situationen zu schließen. Kommunikatives Handeln wird dabei weniger von sprachlichen Mitteln als von interaktiv etablierten Schemata getragen, die als Konventionen sozialer Netzwerke anzusehen sind.     Abstract: This article draws attention to language choice and language use of Austrian bi- and multilingual school children. We explore some implications of their linguistic practices with regard to social inclusion in an Austrian educational school setting. Pursuing a Dynamic Systems and Complexity Theory approach, we hypothesise that before language users actually use a language within a certain context, they have to evaluate the respective communicative situation by taking multiple contextual factors into consideration, meaning language users choose to use, or not to use, a language based on the socio-contextual information at hand. We consider these contextual factors to be most relevant as they provide the basis on which speakers can actually make use of a certain language within a given context.
